Italy Highlight

What makes Italy unique compared to other destinations in Europe?

Because you can find all of Europe in only one country. In the Central Alps, the communities speak in German, while as you travel south, the landscapes and culture begin to resemble Greece and Spain—all within just 700 miles. Italy also boasts the world’s largest collection of UNESCO World Heritage Sites (61 in total) and iconic cities of art that narrate thousands of years of history. The country is known for being safe, welcoming, and diverse. With the richest biodiversity in Europe and the largest area of certified organic agriculture, Italy is a global leader in food and wine, offering flavors and traditions that are celebrated around the world.

Italy's Hidden Gem

Which is one lesser-known, off-the-beaten-path destination in Italy and why is it special?

Umbria is the hidden treasure smart travelers keep to themselves. Known as the Land of Saints, it is home to St. Francis, St. Benedict, St. Clare, St. Rita, and—not many know this—but even St. Valentine, the saint after whom 14th February is celebrated around the world. The region’s charming towns tell stories that span from Etruscan and Roman times to today. Assisi, Perugia, Todi, and Norcia are steeped in history, while lesser-known gems like Spello, Bevagna, Foligno, Castiglione del Lago, and the serene Lake Trasimeno offer spectacular architecture, traditions, and local flavors. Food and wine lovers will find Umbria a rising star, where vineyards and rustic cuisine rival Italy’s best. Two unique advantages set Umbria apart: - Nestled in the heart of Italy, Umbria connects seamlessly to Tuscany and Rome, making it easy to enrich your itinerary without long transfers. - Compared to Italy’s busiest destinations, Umbria offers excellent value, relaxed charm, and authentic experiences—perfect for travelers who want high quality at lower costs, far from the crowds.

Italian Way of Life

What are some key cultural insights you think travelers should know before arriving in Italy?

- Italians are friendly and approachable; a smile and a simple “buongiorno” or “buonasera” opens many doors. - Renting a car is safe and convenient, especially in the countryside. Always use a GPS in your language and watch out for ZTL zones (limited traffic areas) to avoid fines. - Embrace the dolce vita. Outside major cities, life moves slower, and travel here is an experience, not a mechanic checklist. - Italy offers a safe and high level National Public Health System. EU & UK citizens: carry your health card — it entitles you to medically necessary, state-funded healthcare on the same terms as residents. Non-EU visitors: emergency care is provided, but follow-up services (hospital stays, tests, medications) may require a payment, however it is absolutely affordable. In any case we recommend comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical expenses and repatriation. - Meals are sacred; dining is about sharing time and stories, not just eating. Italy is made of regions with distinct languages, cuisine and traditions — a simple generalization can denote a low cultural level. A good suggestion to stand out is to celebrate differences between different regions. - Respectful attire is required for churches and official sites; in cities, smart-casual elegance is appreciated. - Learn a few basic phrases; even where English is spoken, trying to speak in Italian is a distinctive sign of upper culture level. - Safe choices for conversation include food, art, football, and family. Avoid sensitive subjects like politics or salaries. - Treat historic sites with care — no eating or behavior that could damage monuments or the environment. - Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory.

Tips for Italy Travel

Are there any common mistakes travelers make when visiting Italy that they could avoid?

One of the most common mistakes travelers make is underestimating Italy’s geography and travel times. Relying on clichés or friends’ travel stories, some travelers request itineraries that try to cover, for example, Milan, Venice, the Amalfi Coast, and Puglia in just 10 days. On paper it sounds exciting; in reality, it means spending more time in trains, airports, and cars than enjoying Italy itself. The reasonable advice is to focus on fewer regions, explore them deeply, and embrace Italy’s diversity. For example, combine Milan, Venice, and the Dolomites for a Northern itinerary; or Rome, Naples, and the Amalfi Coast for a Southern experience. You’ll enjoy a richer cultural immersion, less travel stress, and more authentic encounters. Another is eating at overly touristy restaurants that are located right next to major sights. These places often serve lower-quality food at inflated prices and a menu aimed at tourists rather than authentic local cuisine. Check menus for regional dishes and avoid places with photo-heavy menus or aggressive street touts; consider booking authentic dining experiences in advance. Be smart and make it a requirement in the tour to plan traditional trattorie, osterie or agriturismo, only a native tour operator knows where to find the authentic Km Zero food. Also, requiring a villa or a relais in the countryside without considering the transfer timing, logistics and cost is a normal mistake. In these cases a private driver is really comfortable, however it could be rather expensive. Visiting the countryside of regions like Tuscany, Umbria, Sicily is the more affordable solution: rent a car with a clear plan and the reliable assistance of a local tour operator. Sincerely, driving around the countryside in Italy is a nice, safe and relaxing experience.

Italy Tour Reviews

Honest insights from past guests on our Italy tours

Really appreciated the tour of the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican Museum. Would have liked to visit the St. Peter's Basilica and the Pieta. Sorry that that did not happen. The rest of the tour was wonderful. Really appreciated all the optional excursions. Would've liked to have seen a bit more of Rome itself. A big thank you to Tayla Gatt, our Tour Director. She was excellent at her job - really helpful, full of great information and suggestions. Our tour bus driver, Danielli, was superb at his job. Really appreciated his navigation skills.

I loved every minute of the tour and appreciated that out tour leader made dinner reservations and often pre ordered starters... The only thing I would improve is the description of the biking level required. I feel I am a fairly fit person, but the tour on a normal bike is in parts really tough. I would have chosen an E bike if I had known But everything else was great - the itinerary well thought through, wonderful food, a great tour guide and a fun group.

The entire trip was absolutely wonderful - the sights, the extraordinary food & wine, the landscapes, the tours, and our guide, Augusto. He was so attentive and caring to all our needs. Everything was so well organized. I felt safe and loved and overjoyed with the experience. So grateful to have spent my 56th birthday in Tuscany!

I rated the accommodations good rather than excellent only because the second hotel had a train track next to it, and trains ran all of the time. We loved our tour manager. He was wonderful! We also loved the cooking class, wine shop tasting, Stresa, Siena, glassblowing, Gondola ride, our hotel room in Venice, Carrara Marble Quarries, villages of Cinque Terre.d

We had a great trip to Italy and saw so much on the Escapade itinerary. We also had a great tour director and driver. We liked the ease of the tour because all driving, tickets, hotels, and many meals we arranged. It would have taken so much more time to arrange this trip ourselves and it would have been much more stressful. We enjoyed the group we traveled with as well. I would recommend spending a few extra days before or after the trip on your own. We only stayed one extra day and I wish we had done at least two or three. There is so much to see in Rome so these extra days would be helpful. Each area of the trip had it's own beauty and history. We will choose future trips with Insight and hope they will be as great as our Italy experience!

Overall, the itinerary is great and I thoroughly enjoyed this tour! Excellent tour director and driver! It would be good for people to know how long the optional experiences are so you can fit in some free time to either relax or do some shopping. By opting in for all of the optional experiences, you don't have much time on your own. It is a very fast paced itinerary. It was my first tour so it now I know to not opt in for all optional experiences if I want to have some down time and/or personal time.
