When to go to Italy
The best time to visit Italy depends largely on what you want to do when you are there. Sightseeing tours in cities such as Rome are generally best reserved for spring or fall for the best temperatures, although the coast during summer is doable. Venice is best avoided in the winter due to the risk of flooding. For any Italy vacation that includes skiing, you will want to aim for the first months of the year when the snow in the Italian Alps is at its peak. Learn more.
How long to stay in Italy
There is so much to experience in Italy that we would not recommend anywhere less than seven days, enough time to explore Rome and the Vatican City before heading north to Bologna, Florence, and Pisa or south to the Amalfi Coast. Stretch it to ten days and you could incorporate Lombardy and its lakes into your adventure. With two weeks, there is no reason you could not also head south to Sicily’s ancient Greek sites. Must-visit destinations in Italy
No traveler to Italy should miss out on the pleasure of going on a gondola ride along Venice’s Grand Canal, or discovering the warren of alleyways beneath the Colosseum in Rome. For the perfect blend of culture and cuisine, look no further than the sunny hillsides of Tuscany. Naples is hard to beat when it comes to getting under the skin of modern Italy. Plus, it is also the launching point for trips to the island of Capri. Finally, Cinque Terre, located between La Spezia and Genoa, provides some of the finest landscapes and hiking trails anywhere in the country. Learn more.
