Honest insights from past guests on our Mongolia tours

Great trip but with long bumpy off road drives. Accommodation in Gers the first week was very basic, Gers having big gaps for cold air and small animals to enter. Some of the shared showers only had cold water. I slept in my coat a couple of nights in the mountains as only 5 degrees and too cold to face a tepid shower. Food however was a surprise being a non red meat eater, the alternative was chicken with lots of fresh salads, vegetables and some fruits. Our guide Sara was nice but lacked the skills for a large group. I had no complaints but some of the group had issues which were resolved and avoided at the next stop. Some mis information was given, so we were a little confused. We managed to arrange with Sara and Explore a trip to the Genghis Khan statue and museum at an extra cost the last day which was worth the detour. Camel riding in the Gobi was fun and for half hour we paid around £5.

Excellent trip that explores the magnificent landscape of Mongolia. Staying in Gers and travelling off road by 4WD allows you to immerse yourself in the environment, and the itinerary allows you to see a range of different parts of the country. Would highly recommend!

The guide needs to sharpen up his communication skills and to speak to the whole group and to be clear about then itinerary and what situation is. He often just addressed information to parts of the group who then relayed it to the others. All the information should have been delivered clearly by the guide. He is a very nice guy but just need to improve communication skills.

One harbors certain expectations before embarking on a trip, and the reality of the travel may deviate from that one has imagined. However, Mongolia is a place that lives up to its expectations. The grassy prairie, the free roaming live stocks, the friendly people, a taste of nomadic lifestyle, and the surprisingly varied landscapes. It may be a romantic notion, but I absolutely loved the experience. Of course, be prepared of living without modern comfort on the road, as one had to share toilet and shower in a common area and deal with aggressive insects. However, the experience you get makes it all worthwhile. It is one of the most unique and memorable trips I have taken.

Excellent

People made this a fantastic trip overall, the country is one of a kind, so beautiful. We shared ger camps with the Classic tour in a few instances, and this is a first, we did other NatGeo trips and there was a clear difference in the level of accommodation. The high cost of this trip needs to reflect in better wages for local people, as the accommodation is basic, my hope is that the guide and the drivers can have a better and more competitive income. I understand that previous travellers have given feedback about the Gobi Anar camp in the past and no changes have been implemented. Our local experience was frustrating and disappointing and I would love to chat with a manager about it, please feel free to give me a call at your convenience.

Excellent

My experience with National Geographic and G Adventures in Mongolia was literally life-changing. From the capital city to the Gobi desert to the nomadic ger camps, I was able to experience first-hand the many wonderful facets of this gorgeous country. By sharing with our group their deep love of Mongolia, the guides ensured that each of us carried home our own love of the country.

Mongolia Tours — Highlights and Travel Tips

A tour of Mongolia is perfect for anyone who fancies themselves a nomad. With a population density of only 1.7 people per square-kilometer, Mongolia is uniquely empty, ideal for a little bit of self-discovery. The phenomenal country also has a geographical diversity unlike anywhere else on Earth, combining sandy desert dunes with high mountains and deep lakes - all of which can be enjoyed while soaking up 250 days of pure sunshine each year.

Tour Highlights

  • Ride a horse in Gorkhi Terelj National Park
  • Ride a camel in the Gobi, the fifth-largest desert in the world
  • Sleep in a ger tent (or yurt), the traditional home of Mongolian nomads
  • Find serenity at the Erdene Zuu Monastery in Kharkhorin
  • Stroll through the meadows of Gorkhi-Terelj National Park

Travel Tips

  • One of Mongolia’s top draws for tourists is the annual Naadam festival. This shouldn't-be-missed event is celebrated in mid-July and is a fantastic way to experience the country’s traditional clothing and dramatic sports competitions.
  • Get ready for that windswept look. Mongolia is an incredibly windy country, so be sure to bring a windbreaker, something to protect your face (like a scarf), and balm for dry lips.
  • If planning an overnight trip to the Gobi Desert during the summer, be sure to pack a variety of clothing and supplies for all temperatures. Expect very hot temperatures during the day, but cold winds at night.
  • When camping, don't take your electricity for granted. Most ger camps rely on generators, and many only supply electricity during certain hours. Ask for hours upon arrival, and be sure to bring some battery-powered flashlights.
  • Mongolians love visitors. If passing a nomadic family's ger on your travels, don't be shy - stop by for a chat. You'll often be offered a cup of milk tea and some pleasant conversation. Bring some gifts with you in anticipation of these visits.
