Honest insights from past guests on our Turkmenistan tours

An exciting and fascinating Adventure Tour through a mix of amazing Central Asian countries. Each of the Five Stans was unique, as were the caring and very knowledgeable guides. The meals were great; accommodation was good to amazing.

Fascinating, varied, inspiring from historical, cultural, scenic perspectives. This journey challenged my geopolitical biases and introduced me to some truly extraordinary people- both fellow travellers and guides. For me- just a bit more time in beautiful mountainous Kyrgyzstan please. In any event I will be returning

An excellent trip, full on and varied. Each country has its own unique features; ancient architecture, futuristic buildings, wild mountainous scenery. Rifa, our guide was great, knowledgeable and helpful and did all he could to accommodate everyone in the group. Visiting 5 countries in 3 weeks makes for a busy schedule but experiencing the contrast between them is so worthwhile.

Excellent tour with plenty of variety - fascinating cities, wild mountains, and intriguing culture and history. Rifa, our guide, was efficient and knowledgeable, taking care that everyone got the best experience. Transport arrangement throughout were first rate: clean and with generous seating which provided window seats for all. The inclusion of Turkmenistan in this tour is questionable: Costly entry requirements, yet we were unable to see much beyond the superficial show of Ashgabat.

This trip was the best group tour I’ve ever taken in 25 years. It wasn’t perfect, but the combination of Itinerary, sites visited, transportation and guides/ground staff made it an excellent trip. (Victoria, Muftuna and Slava) Look the Accommodation wasn’t consistent, it was either magnificent like The Elements in Tashkent or poor like Hotel Maroqanda in Samakand but the local guides had passion for the their towns, the sites we saw over the 13 days were mind blowing and the local people we met were so friendly. A big thank you to Andrew in your UK office for keeping this trip running despite it having to run in reverse order because of the sudden change on the Turkmenistan side. Some days were very long, the pace was full on despite ‚free afternoons‘ but there was so much to see and do. The border crossing was a 4 hour challenge but we made it through. I would 100% recommend this trip and suggest you personally add a few days before and after the trip for more exploring.

This trip was really good. We travelled through five ‘Stans’ i.e. Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan and experienced a wide variety of cultures, geography and food. With a vegetarian diet we knew we had difficulties from the start. But the tour leaders really made great efforts to accommodate us. I must congratulate Explore on the coordination of pick ups by coach and other vehicles - excellent timing. Some roads were very rough, others as in Ashgabat were seamless. There were several long journeys. The hotels were fine. The nights in a yurt and under canvas were basic. But our reason for going was not the accommodation or the food, we went to a part of the world we had not seen before. The tour leaders really knew their subject and were clearly enthusiastic to tell us about their countries.

Turkmenistan Tours — Highlights and Travel Tips

Made up of nearly 80% desert but with access to the Caspian Sea, Turkmenistan is perhaps best known for its intricately detailed carpets. While tourism is welcome in Turkmenistan, the country's strict governance means a guided tour is absolutely necessary when on a trip to the country. Perhaps one of the world's most unusual destinations for tourists, photography is mostly prohibited and there is a heavy military presence across the country.

Tour Highlights

  • See the golden dome of the Gypjak Mosque
  • Visit the "Door to Hell", a massive gas crater in Darvaza
  • Experience tradition at the Turkmen Carpet Museum
  • Browse the hundreds of stalls at the Tolkuchka-Basar
  • Find your inner archaeologist at Gonur Tepe, a larger former settlement of the Mouru civilization

Travel Tips

  • Smokers take note - it is 100% forbidden to smoke outside in a public place. However, smoking is permitted inside some restaurants and shops. If you don't see anyone else smoking, you shouldn't either.
  • Unless you particularly love sweltering heat, avoid a tour to Turkmenistan in the summer months. The country is mostly made up of desert, and summer temperatures often surpass 50°C (122°F).
  • Travel outside Turkmenistan's capital city, Ashgabat, requires the accompaniment of a travel guide. This can be costly, so be sure to budget accordingly before your visit.
  • While the country has generally been free of terrorism that has rocked its neighbouring countries, Turkmenistan is known for what is called "vodka terrorism". This crime occurs when Turkmen drink far too much vodka and attempt to fight or rob the people they come across on trains or in the streets. To be on the safe side, avoid men who are evidently drunk.
  • There is a strict curfew of 11pm in Ashgabat, the capital city. This applies to locals and visitors alike. Always return to your hotel before curfew, and women, in particular, should never walk the streets alone at night.
  • Feel free to converse with the friendly locals, but avoid talking about politics especially avoid commenting on the country's leader.
