Peru Highlight

What makes Peru unique compared to other destinations in South America?

Unmatched geographic contrast in short distances, Pacific desert, Andes, and Amazon, plus living Andean culture, world-class archaeology (Machu Picchu, Caral, Kuelap), and a globally recognized cuisine rooted in native crops like potato, quinoa, and ajíes.

Peru's Hidden Gem

One lesser-known, off-the-beaten-path destination in Peru and why is it special?

Waqrapukara (Cusco), a dramatic Inca sanctuary perched on a cliff with horn-shaped rock formations. Fewer visitors than Choquequirao, superb sunrise light, and a manageable day hike for acclimatized travelers.

Peruvian Way of Life

What are some key cultural insights you think travelers should know before arriving in Peru?

Greet with “Buenos días/tardes/noches.” Ask before photographing people. Coca leaves are traditional; treat them respectfully. Bargain politely in markets. In sacred sites, keep voices low and follow signed paths.

Tips for Peru Travel

Are there any common mistakes travelers make when visiting Peru that they could avoid?

Rushing altitude (go easy the first 24–48 hours in Cusco). Not pre-booking Machu Picchu entry/circuit. Underestimating sun/UV at elevation. Bringing oversized luggage to Aguas Calientes (train limits apply).

12 Things To Do in Manu National Park
Located in the region where the tropical Andes meet the Amazonian lowland forest and covering almost two million hectares, Manu National Park in Peru is one of the world’s greatest biodiversity hotspots. Recognised by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve in 1977, the area is home to a staggering variety of plant and animal species, including giant otters, capybaras, peccaries, tapirs, jaguars, caiman, 13 different species of monkeys, over 1000 species of birds and over 1300 species of butterflies.Manu National Park is divided into three zones, the ‘cultural zone’, the ‘reserved zone’ and the ‘restricted zone’. Visitors are permitted to enter the cultural zone independently, where there are several native communities that welcome tourists. Access to the reserved zone is only possible through one of a very small number of tour companies that are allowed to operate there. The restricted zone is an area of pristine forest still home to a number of uncontacted tribes and is not open to tourists.

Honest insights from past guests on our Peru tours

There are so many different experiences - from quaint museums and restaurants to ancient ruins, salt mines, educational tapestry excursions, and exotic wildlife. The Peruvian people are so kind and welcoming. The accommodations were top notch, every detail seen to by the program director... all we had to do was enjoy the experience.

An Unforgettable Trip to Peru and Ecuador

What an adventure! This holiday combines two iconic destinations into one trip. It's a busy, fast-paced itinerary, full of stimulation and excitement so be prepared! In Peru, as well as enjoying Cusco, you'll visit incredible ruins nearby and in the Sacred Valley and learn so much about the Incas and how they conquered, and then retained control of, vast swathes of South America. Holger's in-depth knowledge of all things Inca helped us to piece together this information into a coherent whole so that we had a real insight into the civilisation. You'll also have the opportunity (for no additional cost) to complete the One Day Inca Trail. Machu Picchu does not disappoint and, as well as being technologically fascinating, is absolutely stunning. In the Galapagos, you'll island hop your way to San Cristobal, Floreana, Isabela, Santa Cruz, Isla Lobos, Bartolome and Las Tintoreras, seeing every kind of wildlife imaginable. The animals really are everywhere, in large numbers and just don't mind you being nearby. It's a hiking, snorkelling and photographic extravaganza (and Richard will share all his videos and photos)!

I really enjoyed listening to the local guide who explained the history of Lima, Peru, and what they are doing to prepare for its 500th anniversary. Our local guide in the Cusco area was very interesting and enjoyable also. Seeing how the colors were made for weaving at the llama and alpaca farm was very interesting also. I enjoyed touring the Incan ruins... they were a lot more interesting than I had ever expected. The many varieties of Peruvian and Ecuadorian cuisine were very tasty. The hotel staff and the staff on our ship were all very accommodating.

The trip was amazing! The Tour Director “A.J.” was the BEST!!!! He handled all problems and all questions and had an unbelievable personality. A.J. Is a great asset of Insight Vacations. Hotels and food was fantastic! (Our time in Lima was unimpressive,…just a large, crowded and dirty city. Would have preferred more time in the Sacred Valley.)

Ita absolutely and totally doable for any age or mobility our guide Dante was above and beyond anything we could have wanted or needed his special touches and thoughtfulness was witnessed by the whole group, Jorge was great too and David the driver was wonderful and safe.

Our Inca Trail Trek was an amazing adventure! Our guide, Ludwig, was amazing. His passion for the Inca Trail and Peruvian history shone through in his story telling and explanations. Joining him on his 243rd trek was inspiring. Don't worry about going hungry on this trip. The food was delicious and servings were plentiful. Roberto, our cook, out did himself with every single meal. Everything about this trip was perfect!
