Explore Customer Services Agent Shane provided excellent service, including in finding Amazon accommodation for the exact dates I wanted, as part of a several months’ long itinerary. The trip went smoothly, with the pick up and drop off arrangements, as well as premium accommodation in a jungle lodge. In the space of three days, I was able to enjoy nine guided nature walks and boat excursions. I was entranced by the wonderful array of Amazon flora and fauna. I highly recommend Explore in general and this trip in particular.

I think we did about as much as it was possible to do in the time we were in Peru. We were excellently guided by Olmer (and in part by Fernando in the early part of the trip) and I have nothing but praise for both of them. Our group also seemed to gel really well from the start and throughout which made everything more fun as well. High points for me were the Nazca Lines (yes I know Explore! weren’t able to support the air flights but still!), the Colca Canyon and, of course, Machu Picchu. The trip to Lake Titicaca was great for the island visit to Taquile if disappointing for the floating village (not at all convinced that this is now anything but a tourist money spinner with little real authenticity). All in all, a brilliant if somewhat exhausting holiday.

An excellent trip, well organised from start to finish. All staff extremely helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. When an unexpected guest arrived in our Cabana it was dealt with immediately, I can not fault at all and would highly recommend.

Excellent

Peru wasn't love at first sight, but it became something unforgettable. Lima felt chaotic but I quickly fell into rhythm. Then the Amazon hit me like another world entirely. You don’t just see nature there. You hear it and feel it pressing in around you. The nights were humid and loud, filled with the chorus of life. It was wildly outside my comfort zone but I loved it. Cusco had colonial charm and a sense of sacredness in every stone. Machu Picchu was, of course, the crown jewel. But what surprised me most? The way the guide told its story, not just facts, but legends, perspectives, reverence. This trip didn’t feel curated to be “easy.” It was immersive. Real. A little demanding at times but that’s what made it stick. These guys handled everything greatly. I came home with stories I actually want to tell not just photos to post.

The Amazon extension at Inkatera was a lovely relaxing end to the holiday, a slower pace, despite one early start, with a well set out itinerary. The local guide I had was excellent and I saw lots of wildlife on the various trips. Food was good and plentiful . Fresh bottled water provided daily in room. There was no way to lock your accomodation/room from outside when heading out, but at night there was a makeshift bolt to secure door from inside. Very worthwhile extension.

Excellent

Our trip to the rainforest was one of the best things that I have done in my life (and I have been around)! Thank you so much for bringing a childhood dream to life!

Puerto Maldonado - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

the perfect starting point for any adventure. Don’t be in a rush to set-off on your jungle expedition. The town itself is worthy of some attention before heading into the Tambopata National Reserve. The balmy, tropical climate creates a laid-back vibe, perfect for strolling through the picturesque squares and enjoying a refreshing drink on the twinkling harbour.

Tour Highlights

  • A visit to Puerto Maldonado’s Mariposario Tambopata butterfly farm is a tame introduction to some of the wildlife you’ll see in the jungle.
  • Watch the never-ending succession of weird and wonderful river traffic make its way down the Río Madre de Dios at the ferry dock of the same name.
  • The Obelisco is the closest thing to a skyscraper in this part of the world. At 30 meters high, it is just tall enough to afford you a perfect view of Puerto Maldonado and the vast jungle in the distance.
  • See the snaking form of Río Madre de Dios from the lush Plaza Grau.
  • Peruse the Puerto Maldonado market for local produce and wares.
  • Visit Collpa de la Cachuela, a clay lick just 20 minutes by boat from Puerto Maldonado. Hundreds of Macaws and other Amazonian natives feed off of the clay here.

Travel Tips

  • From Cusco to reach Puerto Maldonado, you can travel either via a quick 40 minute flight, a bus or even a bicycle (only for the fittest ones)!
  • You can make a trip to Puerto Maldonado year-round, though the wet season is from October to March.
