Costa Rica is a shining example of a country embracing ecotourism as a means to protect its natural wonders. The country boasts nearly five percent of the world's known species, and it is making great strides in protecting them and their habitat. On a Costa Rican eco tour, you can visit national parks such as Corcovado and Tortuguero which are committed to protecting the lush rainforests and elusive wildlife such as sloths, jaguars and sea turtles. There are also a variety of eco-friendly activities to try. Enjoy a zip-line ride through the forest canopy, go on a white-water rafting expedition, snorkel among marine creatures, or simply relax at a natural hot spring in Arenal Volcano. Throughout your Costa Rica eco tour, stay in eco lodges and forest retreats. Travel while keeping your carbon footprint is low. The Costa Rican way of life is ‘Pura Vida,’ which means pure life lived in harmony with nature. The spirit of ‘Pura Vida’ resonates throughout our Costa Rica eco tours, teaching you to appreciate and preserve the delicate balance between nature and humankind. Honest insights from past guests on our Eco Costa Rica tours

Oh my gosh! I had the absolute best time in Costa Rica. Our guide Juan Carlos had ALL the knowledge. We asked him everything, history, culture, plants, animals, birds, trees, weather and he had all the answers. My favorite thing was his sense of humor. He always made us laugh and feel welcome. The drivers were amazing too! Ronny was able to spot all the wildlife without any binoculars. Christian was super friendly and engaging as well. My favorite was watching the Green Sea turtles nesting. Such a magical experience. The whale watching was incredible. Whitewater rafting was a blast and lunch was really delicious on the shore. So many amazing memories and such warm and wonderful people. I highly recommend this trip to anyone and demand JC as your guide. Just absolutely the best.

My experience with Explore was the best I could ever have. From the beginning of the organisation till the last day of the trip it was excellent. It was my first trip with Explore, but it will definitely not my last one. The group was great, 10 people, 2 couples, 6 solo travellers. Our guide Juan Carlos was excellent, he gave us a feeling of being a family , he knows everything about animals, plants , Costa Rica. He was always there for all needs. I would like to thank your company and all people who made this trip so wonderful. I can highly recommend your company and Juan Carlos as a Guide Sincerely Manuela Sass ( a German living in Vienna)

We've just returned from an adventure of a lifetime in Costa Rica. Had the best family holiday and saw so much amazing wildlife. Zip-wired above the rainforest canopy, white water rafted along the Rio Balsa, climbed volcano trails, enjoyed a family cooking class in the cloud forest region, learned about local cheese and chocolate and enjoyed eating them, watched a turtle laying eggs in the dark of the night, saw a sloth swimming in the jungle waterways and watched humpbacks breaching in the Pacific on our boat journey to Corcovado National Park. Everyday was an exciting adventure with an itinerary that kept the whole family happy. Covering several different regions, each with its own unique climate, the wildlife trip really did show off the best of Costa Rica. We were extremely lucky to have the most fantastic guide, whose knowledge and enthusiasm made our trip the best it could possibly have been. Perfect holiday in every way.

The accommodation was just for sleeping in but much more than adequate. The itinerary was fantastic - every day had at least one highlight that we'll never forget. The Explore leader was exemplary: friendly, approachable, ultra-knowledgeable and was happy to go above and beyond to show off his country of which he was rightly proud.

A great trip! I really liked seeing four very different destinations and the activities on offer meant it was an exciting trip. Plenty of opportunities to see wildlife - including unexpected whale watching. Some of the hotels are more basic but they didn’t detract from the overall experience.

Tips for Costa Rica eco trips

  • When you’re on a Costa Rica eco trip, bring a reusable bottle. It’s hot and humid, so even if it’s overcast, you’ll need to stay hydrated. Tap water is safe here.
  • Public buses in Costa Rica are an easy, affordable, and largely eco-friendly way to travel. They’re super popular and run between all the main cities and towns.
  • If you can, donate to conservation efforts in the area. There’s normally a donation box in addition to the entry fee at national parks.
