Honest insights from past guests on our Walking Costa Rica tours
This was an excellent, short, if intense tour. So many amazing highlights in this incredible country, crammed into just shy of 8 days. Every national park we visited was amazing; the optional activates varied. Major highlights were the hanging bridges in the cloud forest in Monteverde and the unforgettable Manual Antonio National Park. Our guide (Tyron Vargas) was absolutely outstanding (and our driver was brilliant too!). Tyron was unbelievably knowledgeable, not just about the flora and fauna, but also about the country - its history, its people and its aspirations. All in all, a totally unforgettable experience. His ability to locate animals high in the canopy wasnamazing. He also took photos and videos of the animals via his telescope and then sent the resulting photos and videos to us on WhatsApp, so we could add his incredible photos and videos to our blurred ones! Pura Vida!!!
Our leader was very knowledgeable. However, there were some issues with the itinerary. While I enjoyed the hanging bridges and zip wire, there really was no alternative if you didn't want to do them. Also, the last full day was effectively lost as we couldn't return to the coast and, if we wanted, go again to the National Park.
The tour was very good. Even though we went during the rainy season, they worked with the situation every day it rained. If you come prepared, it should not be a problem. And by coming prepared, that means bring a poncho, umbrella, rain jacket, and a change of clothes when they become wet from rain and sweat. The hotels were comfortable, the food was good, the locals were friendly, and treated us fairly in pricing. The only issue is that they should have made a better effort to describe the physical requirements of the tour. We went on 5 long walks where 3 were VERY strenuous. We are in our 70s and it was very challenging. Thank goodness we had our trekking poles to assist in one walk in the Hanging Bridges. We had to stop several times to catch our breath but the younger people went on and left us behind. Thank goodness the guy leading the tour stayed with us.
To much time wasted, especially the last day we could go nowhere and had to hang round the hotel. We could have easily left later in the day to reach San Jose. I hoped to re-visit the National Park. I don't have a good head for heights, but ended up going on the canopy walkways in Monte Verde, as the alternative was to hang around for 2 hours, and it wasn't cheap. For me it was a waste of money. Also in the original details from Explore an orchid walk was mentioned but this was not mentioned and when I asked I was told there wasn't time. I very much wanted to do this.
