Portugal Trekking and Hiking Tour Reviews

We really loved our Coastal Camino walk. It was beautiful to walk through lots of historic towns and visit many beautiful beaches on the first few stops. The hotels were all good and the one in Lestrove and sensational. The only day which we found tough was walking into Vigo on a very hot day as it seemed like many streets of industrial/suburban walking the last 5 km. Overall a wonderful experience and wish we had done 14 days instead of 12!

Beautiful hikes with rewarding views!

Best way to spend a week in Madeira. The trip was exceptional with 5 great hikes and extraordinary views at each turn. It was a full bloom season and and that made every hike interesting. Hiking through lush green mountains with the sea always in sight- it was just beautiful. The trials along the Levadas (ancient water channels) were very interesting. Dip in the natural pools at Porto Moniz or in the hotel after the hikes were worth it. Aqua Natura Bay was the best stay and had great meals at the hotel. Till the last hike, everything worked out perfectly. This is a great itinerary to explore Madeira -its culture and natural beauty of the Island.

Our guide Sylvia was superb and looked after us so very well. Our bus driver was very careful and drove very safely the whole week. Most of our hotels were also very good as were the meals. We would recommend Sylvia and the Portuguese Camino to our friends. Thank you.

We spent 12 days doing the walk. We thoroughly enjoyed it. It was so well organised. The accommodation and food varied throughout the trip. We are in really enjoyed the variation and the surprises of some of our destination points. I would highly recommend it using them.

A different perspective on the Algarve

This was our sixth Exodus trip (and overall one of the best). The walks were interesting with spectacular scenery and varied wildlife (both flora and fauna), and we learnt a new definition of the term 'more or less flat'. The hotels were all good, the first two full of character and the final one in a great location with magnificent views over Sagres harbour and with extraordinarily helpful staff. The hotel breakfasts offered great variety and were excellent fuel for the mornings’ walking. The non-walking activities were well-chosen and interesting. There were visits to a ceramics workshop and an artisan olive oil presser which were fascinating and the tasting at the high tech Vicentino winery very near the Alentejo coast offered a different dimension. The wines were very good, with a noticeable salty tang. The walks were on paths that were generally good or very good, other than about 1km on day 6 which is over broken rock, but trail shoes or boots should have good treads as some short sections were quite loose and eroded (and could have been slippery if the ground had been wet). We were a little late for the best of the wild flowers on the dunes but they were still very varied and attractive. We saw storks nesting on rock pinnacles just offshore (apparently the only place in the world where they nest on sea stacks) and were lucky enough to see three peregrine falcons on one of the coastal walks. Overall, this was a great week with friendly and amusing companions from Canada, Scotland and England and superlative guides. If we did it again, we would probably go in the late Spring rather than the early Summer, both to have slightly more varied wild flowers and (perhaps!) to avoid walking in 34 degrees in the hills, but we would thoroughly recommend the trip.

Really enjoyed the walk. Hotels were all great, no issues with either rooms or beds. I guess the only thing I really missed was being able to make a cup of tea at the end of the day, however most hotels were very obliging and made us one to take up to our room.

Portugal Hiking Tours — Highlights and Travel Tips

Highlights of Portugal hiking tours

  • Lace up your hiking boots and get ready to explore the awe-inspiring Madeira Island. The tranquil levada walks along traditional irrigation channels are unique to the region and are highly recommended. If you are looking for a bit of a challenge on the island, try the trail from Pico Do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo. The hike will bring you up a cliffside to the top of Pico Ruivo, the highest point of Madeira. The visuals at the top are worth the walk.
  • Explore the Douro Valley on foot as you hop from vineyard to vineyard and sip on world-class wine varieties. We suggest walking the Alto Corgo, a scenic stretch of the valley that will have you climbing steep hills while passing through the terraced vineyards, overlooking the panoramic views of the Douro River.
  • Do not miss a hiking trip in the Azores. Each of its nine volcanic islands is blessed with gorgeous hiking trails. While the hike to Miradouro Vista Do Rei in Sao Miguel is popular for all the right reasons, there are many more hiking trails in the Azores to consider and choose from. Pick one that fits your needs.
  • Although a pilgrimage route, the Portuguese Camino is not off-limits to regular hikers. Starting at Lisbon, travelers walk along the Tagus River before arriving in Santiago de Compostela in Spain.
  • If you love ocean views, you have to hike one of the coastal trails in the Algarve. The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail is one of the most captivating routes here, treating hikers to views of colorful cliffs while enjoying sandy beaches.
