Traverse the Atlantic coastline of Portugal to reveal a landscape of deserted beaches, fishing villages and dramatic cliffs. The Rota Vicentina is a long-distance footpath which opened in 2013 and represents a successful eco-tourism initiative to develop low impact tourism in a relatively untouched region of Portugal. The trail connects Cape St Vincent, Portugal's most south-westerly point, to the village of Odeceixe, where it splits into two trails; the Historical Way which heads inland and the Fishermen's Trail which follows the coast to Porto Covo. This trip follows the Fishermen's Trail from Porto Covo to Odeceixe. To the south of the bustling capital of Lisbon awaits a contrasting landscape of wild beauty, where tourists rarely visit despite endless beaches and authentic fishing villages. This is the Alentejo region, covering a third of Portugal's land mass but just 4% of its population. Following this dramatic coast where wildflowers and butterflies keep company with just a handful of hikers, there is ample opportunity to take a swim or a rest break overlooking the endless ocean. Traverse the terraced hillsides and follow local trails and ‘levadas’ through the peaceful, idyllic countryside and ultimately reach the island’s highest peak (Pico Ruivo, 1862 metres). Stay at a mix of 4* and smaller traditional properties in beautiful surroundings and learn more about the island through our detailed route notes.
Closer to Africa than Europe, the Portuguese island of Madeira is blessed with a mild and equable climate all year round. Volcanic in origin, Madeira’s rugged interior rises abruptly to over 1800 metres, with forests of fragrant pine, eucalyptus and laurel flanking its jagged peaks. You will find colourful flowers and trees in bloom at all times of the year but the island is ideal for a walking holiday for another reason: its elaborate network of ‘levadas’ (irrigation channels), which wind their way across gullies and steep slopes to more than 2000km/1250 miles of channels and over 40km/25 miles of tunnels.
*An extra day is recommended in the bustling little capital of Funchal so that you will have time to visit a Madeira wine lodge, explore the colourful markets and the famous botanical gardens, enjoy the superb fish restaurants or spend more time at the picturesque Monte neighbourhood. Another extra day can be requested in Santana where you can enjoy a beautiful walk along the Levada do Caldeirao Verde.

The tour was wonderful. Our tour manager, Javier, was funny and cheerful and extremely organized. I didn't know anything about the Duoro Valley and found it to be one of the most beautiful wine regions I've seen. The trip included many wonderful meals and my favorite was the one that took place in the home of a Portuguese family. Not only did they serve us a wonderful traditional meal but they made us feel welcome as if we were friends. The entire tour was fun and informative and definitely good value for the cost.

The days were well planned and local guides all very knowledgeable. I enjoy small villages, so my favorite day was touring the coastal villages west of San Sebastián. They were scenic and relaxed in tone. My suggestion for hotels is adhering to bed preferences listed. We 2 women asked for twin beds, but twice were given a room with one queen bed. I also greatly appreciate coffee set ups in the room, and not all hotels provided this.

A great week exploring the South West coast of Portugal. Walks were varied and well set out. Our tour leader, Kathleen, was excellent. Relaxed, informative and knowledgeable. Hotel was very good, with large rooms and a good breakfast choice.
