Costa Rica Highlight

What makes Costa Rica unique compared to other destinations?

Costa Rica is uniquely positioned as one of the most biodiverse countries in the world, despite its small size. It offers travelers a rare mix of lush rainforests, volcanoes, cloud forests, pristine beaches on two coasts (Pacific and Caribbean), and abundant wildlife—all within a relatively short drive. Its commitment to environmental conservation, peaceful society (no standing army), and “Pura Vida” lifestyle make it a truly distinctive travel experience.

Costa Rica's Hidden Gem

One lesser-known, off-the-beaten-path destination in Costa Rica and why is it special?

San Gerardo de Dota is a hidden gem in the Talamanca Mountains. Far less visited than Monteverde or Arenal, it’s a paradise for birdwatchers—especially those hoping to spot the elusive resplendent quetzal. Its cool climate, serene cloud forests, and absence of tourist crowds make it perfect for peaceful nature immersion and hiking.

Costa Rican Way of Life

What are some key cultural insights you think travelers should know before arriving in Costa Rica?

1. Pura Vida is more than a phrase — it’s a way of life. It reflects gratitude, positivity, and living in the moment. 2. Costa Ricans (Ticos) are generally friendly, polite, and non-confrontational. A smile and basic Spanish go a long way. 3. Time is more relaxed — expect a laid-back pace (sometimes called “Tico time”). 4. Respect for nature is deeply ingrained, so travelers are expected to do the same.
Tips for Costa Rica Travel

Are there any common mistakes travelers make when visiting Costa Rica that they could avoid?

1. Underestimating travel time: Costa Rica’s roads can be winding, slow, and sometimes poorly marked. A 50-mile drive may take 2+ hours. 2. Skipping local cuisine: Many travelers stick to Western food. Don’t miss out on local dishes like gallo pinto, casados, and fresh tropical fruits. 3. Packing wrong: Weather varies by region—bring layers and waterproof gear. 4. Assuming it's cheap: Costa Rica isn’t a budget destination compared to its neighbors. Prices can be comparable to the U.S. in some areas.

Arenal Volcano Hike: 8 Best Trails
Arenal Volcano Hike: 8 Best Trails
Arenal Volcano is one of the most spectacular sights to see on a Costa Rica tour. This giant stands at an impressive 1,657 meters tall and has been one of Costa Rica’s most active volcanoes in the past half-century. But this doesn’t keep visitors from embarking on adventures to trek its lava-filled terrain located in La Fortuna. While it is prohibited to climb Arenal Volcano, numerous hikes in Arenal Volcano National Park allow you to walk around the base, along the old lava fields, and through the rainforest. Here we provide a breakdown of each Arenal Volcano hike to help you plan your trip to Arenal Volcano National Park. Note that distances and times are given for one-way. The best time to visit the park is between February to April, for dry weather and your best chance to utilize the trails. Rains during other times of the year can make the trails treacherous and inaccessible. For a more seasonal overview of the country, check out our travel guide on the best time to visit Costa Rica. There are several trails to hike around Arenal Volcano.

The CR tour was one of our best! The guide Juan Carlos, the wildlife, the scenery, the adventurous experiences, the accommodations and the food were all excellent. We would love to do it again!

Weeks later and still speechless! This trip was so culturally immersive and well planned. Our tour manager was phenomenal and made such an impact on our family. This trip was so educational and my kids loved every single day. 10/10!

It was a guided trip across the country to showcase the culture and activities of Costa Rican culture. Breakfast and accommodations was all covered under our trip while certain add on activities were payed by us directly on the tour. There were 30 of us in all to get to know each other so aside from getting to know the country you also got to do it with potential new friend circles from around the world.

Cloud mountain adventures, both ziplining and hanging brides are my favorite. Although t g ere other adventures that are very much apart of the whole experience. My favorite stay was Nammbu in Guanacaste, loved the view from our room. Beach was a short walk from hotel.

The time spent in Monteverde was wonderful! The hanging bridges and zip lining were fun ways to see the forest canopy! The most memorable were the fabulous people that we got to meet on the tour!

Wildlife galore. Our tour leader Gerardo Zamora can find any animal. Perfect guide. Luis Chinchilla is the very best and safest driver anywhere. Both great companions. The tour is very adventurous with precious free time as well. You really go to some of the greatest areas in CR. Hotels and lodges are unbeatable, and everything is taken care of. Insane pictures. Travel companions are like family. Unforgettable!
