Itinerary
Experience the Camino from the Pyrenees in France to the Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela. Traverse the centuries of time as well as Northern Spain on the medieval Camino de Santiago pilgrim trail. This trip offers a chance to walk the entire length of the Spanish Camino, from St Jean Pied de Port in France, across the Pyrenees and onwards to Santiago. The entire trip can be done over a month, or you can break it down further as this itinerary comprises of our separate self guided walks along the Camino in the Pyrenees, to Logroño, Burgos, Leon and Santiago de Compostela. The fascinating route will bring to life the unique history that you'll discover along this famous pilgrimage trail. Known as 'The Way of St James' in France, the Camino de Santiago winds its way across borders, following in the footsteps of thousands of medieval pilgrims through the beautiful Sierras of Navarre and Aragon. The route passes a multitude of churches and monasteries that mark the Compostela Trail, resembling a travelling museum of Romanesque art.
day 1Arrival in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port (France)
Make your own way to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, the capital of the Basse-Navarre and the Pays de Aze. It is also one of the three remaining French provinces of the old Kingdom of Navarre. There is time in the afternoon to take a stroll along the cobbled streets and up to the town lookout. You can also explore the many arts and craft shops. We recommend that you purchase supplies for lunch tomorrow as you will only pass one café/bar on the route. You should also collect your pilgrims stamp from the Pilgrim Office or Tourist Office.

day 12To San Juan de Ortega (7 or 8.5hrs)
day 13Continue to Burgos (5-6hrs)
day 14Walk to Hornillos del Camino, transfer to Isar (6hrs)
day 15Morning transfer to Hornillos, walk to Castrojeriz (5hrs)
day 16Walk from Castrojeriz to Fromista (8hrs)
day 17Continue to Carrion de los Condes (5.5hrs)
day 18Walk to Calzadilla de la Cueza (4.5hrs)
day 19Walk to Sahagun (6.5hrs)
day 20Walk to El Burgo Ranero, transfer to Sahagún (5.5hrs)

day 31Walk through the hills of Galicia to Portomarin (5-6hrs)

day 33Leave Lugo province to enter La Coruña, on to Arzúa (7-8hrs)

At 76 years of age I approached my 40 day solo pilgrimage from St Jean Pied de Porte to Santiago with a degree of trepidation; however with adequate training and the support of UTracks my journey could not have gone better. The pre-booked accomodation (essential) and the luggage carry-forward service meant that I only had to carry a 4 kilo backpack knowing that my overnight stays were secure. The full solo Camino Francés is challenging, physically and mentally, however the safety net provided by UTracks gave me confidence everyday - Buen Camino!
