Walking the trail from mid-April to May was just perfect. The weather started off cool and ended in a heatwave, though each day was taken in its stride. The trail can be challenging - hills, rocky paths and mud! This makes for a wonderful adventure through the French countryside, forests, farmland, and many amazing villages. The selected accommodation was perfect, varying from hostels, homestays and hotels, in remote areas and central villages. The breakfasts and dinners were exceptional, mostly pilgrim-style meals, tasting the local fare, and occasionally five star! The variety was awesome. Take each day at a time, add a couple of rest days and savour every step - those 40 days will come around quickly.

Make your own way to le Puy-en-Velay and the joining hotel. It is an ancient town surrounded by a volcanic landscape, dominated by rocky peaks rising from the valley floor. We recommend that you allow at least half a day to explore. Take a stroll through town and warm up your walking legs climbing the 267 steps to the Chapel of St Michael d'Aiguilhe, built by Godescalc after his pilgrimage to Santiago in AD951, for views over the town and surrounding area. You can also visit some of the many museums and the Romanesque Cathedral of Notre-Dame.
