Close your eyes and imagine the ripple of grapevines swaying in Bordeaux’s warm breeze. The satisfying crunch of fresh Atlantic oysters being shucked in Arachon Bay. The tap of footsteps meandering slowly along the cobblestones of ancient Carcassonne. The honeyed scent of fresh Périgord strawberries at the Sarlat Market. These are just some of the moments you can experience in Southwest France – and we can’t wait for you to relish them with us on this intimate tour.
Great and diverse tour of South West France. From the busy cities to coast, Alps and countryside all were fantastic. Great tour guide and driver who were friendly, helpful and informative. Loved the convenience of being dropped close to locations and picked up in the right spot at the end.
Enjoyed this tour. Truda, our guide was great, very knowledgeable. Everything was well organised. Ervin’s our driver was really good. Generally the accommodation was good, except as it was so hot a couple of the hotels did not have air conditioning, which made it difficult to sleep. I did not enjoy the dinner we had in Castelnau de Montmiral and as this was an old hotel it was very hot. Hotel du Barry was a lovely hotel, although it was a bit hot as no air conditioning, but the meal at this hotel was exquisite, absolutely delicious. One suggestion for consideration would be a river cruise to see a different perspective of some of the towns we visited. I would have preferred less 1 night stays. It was great being in one place for a few nights and doing day trips from there.
A wonderful journey through the south of France, experiencing great food, wine, historical towns, beautiful vistas - and meeting new friends. The trip has a nice balance of organised things to see and do - and provides time to explore as well. Our guide, Leticia, was fantastic - she provided insights into the places we were visiting, the very interesting and complex history of the region, and always had a smile and a special local treat for us... all in all we were very happy...
The tour group was about the right size and good value for money. The tour guide and driver were excellent and took us to places in SW France that we would not have gone to by ourselves.
Charly was a very informative guide. Could not done more to help me. Was so obliging. Took us on a wonderful tour, carried my bag a lot off the time. Such wonderful scenery and excurtions.
Tour is well worth doing.
Very enjoyable tour with excellent tour leader Nathalie and Ken our fantastic driver. It was a small group so we had extra space on the bus. Some of the hotels were a little tricky with stairs and no lifts which is hard if you are travelling solo. It was lovely to see the countryside and experience the beauty and nature away from the city with Nathalie and Ken sharing their knowledge of their special spots to make it an amazing experience.
Exceptional experience - knowledgeable and engaging guide, fantastic accommodation, brilliant coach and driver. Wonderful way to see and experience rural and village life in France. Highly recommend.
Top class
Charlie was a great host. I loved the tour
Southwest France is definitely a jewel worth seeing. Magnificent country and experiences. Albert was a very knowledgeable, warm tour guide that bought the French culture alive. Plenty of time to relax and explore. Accomodation is a little up and down, but hey it's back roads and therefore you can expect some quirky places to sleep.
If big cities, bright lights and high speed travel are your thing, I'd choose something different. This tour takes you through the smaller towns and villages, through farmland and via the back roads wherever possible. Each day has something different to offer and if you have an interest in history, this part of France is for you. It has cave paintings, majestic castles, famous battle sites and you'll be in rooms where kings and queens once stood. We were fortunate to have good weather so we also got to see the scenery at its best.
I have already put in my review some time ago - why do you need another?
Great trip, made even better by the expert guide Albert
Our tour covered a lot of the history, architecture and geography of that area of France. The hotels were generally very good and central to what we were doing. What really made the tour were our tour leader Albert who was so much fun, so knowledgeable and such a great teacher. Kaspar the driver was also wonderful. Both of them went out of their way to help us in general. In particuar we needed help getting to our train station and they provided the transportation - we were so grateful The small group on the tour worked out so well. A super trip. Barb Green
The tour took us to several smaller cities. We were able to visit Europe's largest sand dunes, an oyster producer, wine producer, and a cured ham store. Our driver Kaspar was excellent, always safe and willing to help some of our less mobile travellers. Our guide Albert was very knowledgeable on almost any topic for the local areas we visited. Both Albert and Kaspar were very patient with us, and always on time. We travelled early October and experienced some cooler weather. Our lodgings were ideally located for us to explore the many attractions.
For the most part, the tour itinerary was fantastic. We enjoyed Albi and would have preferred a night there. I could have also skipped the night in the Pyrennes (rather stay in a village). Otherwise I felt like all of the hotels were in perfect locations for the city/village we were in. For the accommodations, not a fan of Hotel du Barry (or whatever the name of the spa hotel is) but mostly because it wasn’t to my taste (otherwise fine). I’m sure you will hear many complaints about Hôtel Saint-Albert, the staff were “meh” and the breakfast was bogus or at least a big let down compared to what we had at other stops. Now for the part that made this trip fantastic – the team Kaspar and Albert. Kaspar was courteous, efficient, very accommodating and most importantly he made us feel safe. Albert was outstanding!! He is patient, entertaining, savvy and kind. His knowledge of everywhere and everything we saw was top notch and his history lessons made the experience that much better. You could not have a better representative for your tours. Bravo Albert!!
I chose this tour at the last minute, having never travelled with them before. It was exactly as described, the participants were terrific, many had travelled on previous trips with Back Roads. We were looked after well, in no small part due to our great driver Casper, & dynamic, so-knowledgeable tour leader Albert! The included dinners were good [if too much food], but the stand-out was the dinner at Hotel du Barry!
Bordeaux is wonderful area to tour, and Charlie (our guide) made sure that there was a good balance between exploring and having some necessary downtime. He has a really good knowledge of French history and life - and is an excellent judge of how much the group can enjoy and absorb. Such a great tour director. Our driver, Ewan, is so good at his job and great company to boot. The meals provided as part of the tour were excellent and the hotels were quite outstanding. We enjoyed having the opportunity to choose our own restaurant on occasion, too. Definitely the best land tour we've done - and we've done quite a few. We'll be back for more!
A lovely taste to visiting some charming towns along the south west coast of France . Out tour guide Charlie and coach driver Ervince were special. I would recommend having two night minimum stays in towns as to having later starts in the morning and having the possibility of getting a feel for the place in which we stay.
An excellent tour of SW France.
we had an excellent driver, a very lovely guide, great accommodation choices. Some of the accommodation was either excellent or outstanding, some not so great but always in very convenient locations which I think should take precedence. The bus was comfortable and the itinerary was well planned. I was very happy to travel with Back Roads again.
Beautiful destinations each day. I loved the group lunches and dinners and out tour leader and driver organised a lunch in a place called Domme with spectacular views. A visit to a winery with wine cellars miles underground that was used to mine the limestone as well mind blowing
