What makes Japan unique compared to other destinations?

Japan offers a unique cultural heritage, from the traditions of sumo, geisha, ninja, and samurai to an extraordinary diversity of landscapes. From the northern island of Hokkaido, renowned for its winter activities, to the tropical islands of Okinawa in the south, famous for their crystal-clear waters and marine life, the contrast is striking. This north-to-south range creates an exceptional richness found in few countries. The country is also home to remarkable natural environments, including volcanoes, moss-covered forests, and vast marshlands, offering endless opportunities for exploration. Among its highlights is the Kumano Kodo, one of the world’s UNESCO-listed pilgrimage trekking routes, providing a unique blend of nature, spirituality, and history.

Japan's Hidden Gem

One lesser-known, off-the-beaten-path destination in Japan and why is it special?

Shikoku 88 Temples pilgrimage trail. While it is not as famous as the Wakayama region with the Kumano Kodo trails, it remains a highly respected spiritual journey that circles the entire island of Shikoku. This pilgrimage route offers a unique combination of experiences: hikers can explore mountainous landscapes dotted with ancient temples, as well as enjoy stunning coastal scenery along the way.

What are some key cultural insights you think travelers should know before arriving in Japan?

Japan is a highly respectful and orderly society, where politeness and consideration for others are essential. Travelers should speak quietly in public, avoid phone calls on transport, and always be punctual. Shoes must be removed in homes and some traditional places, and cleanliness is very important—carry your trash as bins are limited. Cash is still widely used, especially outside major cities. When visiting temples, shrines, or onsen, it is important to follow local etiquette, such as washing before entering baths and showing respect in sacred spaces. Although Japan is a highly developed country, English is not widely spoken everywhere, especially in rural areas. Being prepared with a translation app like Google Translate can be very helpful.

Japan Tour Reviews

Honest insights from past guests on our Japan tours

Loved this tour, it covered all the major sites for a first time visitor and left some free time to follow your own preferences. Tour leader was EXCELLENT and so knowledgeable. Transport links worked fine, we did not have our own tour bus, we used public transport and occasionally sent our luggage on by road, that worked fine. A great trip!

Trip was great and we travelled with my infant 8months old - initally we thought going a trip with infant (that too with a group) would a wrong decision, but the way everyone treated us that includes staffs, travellers around us - it think this trip is one among the best we travelled

Initial booking was made easy by friendly and attentive staff. The guide was well prepared, knowledgeable and had good presentation skills. He related to the entire group and went out of his way to attend to everyones demands. He offered several extra tours for those who did not want free time. We however, relished free time to explore some different areas. The itinerary was a great overview of Japan especially for those of us visiting for the first time.

This was an amazing trip. The early starts were well worth it and it seemed that everyday there was something unexpected to enjoy. We visited so many different placed and experienced so many different things. It's hard to choose a favourite but I think staying in and experiencing the monastery were highlights for me. Also experiencing a different culture which appears very western on the surface but is totally different was fascinating. Our guide, Vania was amazing and probably the best guide I have encountered. She was very friendly, professional, knew everyones names and needs very quickly, got us to and into places very efficiently and was extremely knowledgeable about all things Japanese. I travelled with a small carry on bag as suggested and this was perfectly adequate especially as there are really good, easy to use laundry facilities in the hotels. I loved this trip. Thank you Explore

The main reason I chose this particular tour was to walk the kumano kodo and complete my dual pilgrimage status. While this was the highlight of my trip, enhanced by the lovely local guide Jennifer, the whole tour was superb. We covered a lot of ‘must see’ places for a first time visitor in Japan led by a very organised, capable and delightful Zilola. We were a group of 9 some couples some solo travellers of varying nationality. The hotels exceeded my expectations and were all comfortable. I particularly enjoyed the ryokan experience where we stayed during the main hike. I would highly recommend this trip for anyone wanting to see the stunning kii mountains as well as Tokyo, Kyoto, Matsumoto and Osaka

I loved that the holiday was so well organised and that I was able to experience places that I probably wouldn’t have visited. MISA was our guide, her energy, stories, knowledge, organisation skills were amazing. A fantastic experience for all ages of people.
