Step back in time and follow in the footsteps of Robert Louis Stevenson on the 'Stevenson's Trail: The Cevennes – 11 Days' walking tour. Starting in Le Puy-en-Velay and concluding in St Jean De Gard, this self-guided trek retraces the legendary route chronicled in Stevenson’s classic travel memoir, 'Travels with a Donkey in the Cevennes.'
The journey spans hilly regions of extinct volcanoes and the wild, mountainous Cevennes, passing through unspoiled national parks, romantic ruins, and villages little changed since Stevenson’s day. The trail is marked as GR70, guiding you over Mont du Goulet and Mont Lozere, and through landscapes filled with natural beauty and a sense of serene isolation.

day 1Arrive Le Puy-en-Velay
For your first nights accommodation you stay in the historic city of Le Puy not far from Le Monastier where the Stevenson’s Trail begins. Le Puy is a wonderful town to explore and you may wish to add an extra night. Its most striking attraction is the Cathédrale Notre-Dame du Puy, dating chiefly from the first half of the 12th century. Each morning, pilgrims gather at the cathedral to be blessed before starting their journey to Santiago de Compostela. The cathedral has been a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1998, as part of the “Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France”. The iron statue of Notre-Dame de France (The Virgin Mary) overlooking the town was designed by the French sculptor Jean-Marie Bonnassieux, and is made from 213 Russian cannons taken in the Siege of Sevastopol (1854–1855). Fountain Crozatier is also worth visiting in the centre of town.

They organised my trip to France to walk the GR70 Stevenson's Way, which I completed in August. I booked 9 months in advance, which I recommend to ensure availability of accommodation in some remote areas of France. Communication with the team was excellent and the staff were very helpful. About two weeks before departure I received a pre-trip information pack. I was pleasantly surprised by the depth and quality of the information provided which included details of accommodation, baggage transfers and a detailed day by day route guide. All this was available to print and save to my phone. Another great feature was gpx files for use with free app. This proved surprisingly easy to use and the voice guidance and audible off-route warnings were particularly helpful. The trip itself was extremely well organised. I enjoyed the variety of food and accommodation and experienced only one check-in problem which they quickly resolved after I called their emergency contact number. I had a great trip and would highly recommend this company if you are planning a walking trip.

I enjoyed my walk along the Stevenson Trail very much. All the arrangements put in place worked out well and apart from a few showers on the first day and a deluge on the last day the weather was great.
