Food That People Come To France For
Uncover the Dordogne Valley’s medieval charm on the 'Dordogne's Hidden Treasures on Foot – 10 Days' walking tour. Ideal for travelers with a taste for culture and cuisine, this self-guided journey covers a circuit of approximately 120km, weaving through France’s Correze and Lot departments. Each day brings a fresh discovery: ancient castles, stone-built villages, ruins, and mysterious caves.
Relish stays in family-run hotels renowned for their authentic regional cooking—a true highlight for gastronomes. The region is famed for truffles, foie gras, magret de canard, and robust local wines. With over nine villages on the prestigious ‘Les Plus Beaux Villages de France’ list, including Collonges-la-Rouge, Carennac, and Loubressac, the scenery is as rich in history as it is in beauty.
The moderate walking route is thoughtfully designed, passing through limestone plateaux, wooded hills, and down to the picturesque river port of Beaulieu. Along the way, you’ll encounter sites like Rocamadour, perched dramatically above the Alzou Canyon, and Martel, the historic town of seven towers.
The unique selling point of this tour package is its off-the-beaten-path approach to France’s rural heartland, combining world-class gastronomy with the allure of unspoiled medieval villages—perfect for experienced travelers seeking a deeper connection with French heritage.

Beautiful villages, great food, a variety of unique accommodation. Wonderful ground support service!
Hidden treasures aptly describes this lovely walk which crosses beautiful countryside and sleepy villages off the tourist track. With the exception of a few places, we sometimes barely saw a soul all day before arriving at our destinations. Access to GPS is recommended, as it’s easy to miss some paths. Several were very overgrown and muddy, so poles are suggested too. The accommodation was mostly a good standard and hosts were welcoming. As well as visiting many gorgeous villages, highlights were experiencing delicious regional cuisine (evening meals were excellent) and going underground at Gouffre de Padirac.
