Southern Alps to Classic Provence

Walking in the Canyon du Verdon

From Mountains to Lavender Fields

Historic 'Aix en Provence'

Itinerary

Walking in Haute Provence delivers a week of striking contrasts, inviting experienced and senior travelers to explore both the Southern Alps and the sun-drenched valleys of Provence. This 8-day self-guided trip follows the GR4 trail from St Andre-les-Alpes to Provence, blending rugged gorges, lavender fields, and ancient Roman routes. Highlights include a dramatic traverse of the Gorges du Verdon, visits to Moustiers and the lively market town of Aix en Provence, and strolls through fields of truffle oaks and wildflowers. The unique selling point is the seamless transition from Alpine grandeur to Provencal charm, offering a rich tapestry of landscapes and cultural experiences.

day 1Arrive St Andre-les-Alpes

Make your way to St. Andre-Les-Alpes, a small village set between forested hills and the Lac de Castillon. There are a couple of narrow streets to explore and the church displays some plaques remembering Resistance fighters from the area. There are a couple of bars to relax and enjoy a cool drink. Parapente (paragliding) is quite popular in this area, they jump off the ridges around the town and land on a flat area by the lake. The centre of the old village is worth exploring; there is a small street market on Saturday mornings.

Gran Paradiso Guided Hike

5.0(5 reviews)

Head deep into the Aosta Valley on foot to experience the rugged alpine beauty of the Gran Paradiso National Park. Deep in Italy's Aosta Valley on the border with France, is Italy's first national park, so declared by King Victor Emmanuel III in 1922 in the tradition of his grandfather who had named it a Royal Game Reserve in 1856 to protect the ibex and chamois populations. As a direct result of this decree, encounters with these animals occur daily in Park, in the valleys and high on alpine passes. With much of the walk over 2000m (up to a maximum altitude of 3152m), it is not suprising that the scenery is exceptional with views to Mont Blanc, Monte Rosa and the Matterhorn ranges from the high passes and lookouts encountered. Rugged valleys carpeted in wildflowers, rocky snow covered passes and glacial lakes are typical of this alpine paradise. At night the hosts of the rifugi (mountain refuges) welcome you with good quality mountain cuisine and a dining room brimming with atmosphere.
