Cross the storied Aubrac Plateau in southern France on the "Le Puy Camino - Aumont to Conques" self-guided walking tour, an 8-day exploration rich in history and natural beauty. Designed for experienced travelers and those seeking a meaningful journey, this moderate-level trip follows the Via Podiensis—the French Way of St James—through charming villages, Romanesque churches, and the picturesque town of Conques.
This stage is part of the greater pilgrimage route to Compostela, a path trodden by pilgrims since the 9th century. The itinerary can be combined with other segments, offering flexibility to tailor your adventure. All accommodations, meals, and transport are arranged for a worry-free experience.

day 1Arrival in Aumont-Aubrac
Make your own way to Aumont-Aubrac. Set at 1050m, the town is in the heart of Lozère and is an important point on the Le Puy Camino. The old town has preserved houses from the 16th and 17th centuries with sculpted stone facades. There is a statue here of the “Bête du Gévaudan” (Beast of the Gévaudan), the man-eating wolf-dog that terrorised the Lozère area in the late 1700s and as a werewolf has inspired literature and popular culture since the mid 1800s.

It was perfect. Simple, quiet vacation.
Great interaction with UTracks before leaving. Everything was well organised, no problems at all. The walk had some demanding parts, there were periods of inclement weather, but that didn't take the joy out of our days. The fields were ablaze with spring flowers and colours of every type. On the way we made some new friends, including some delightful accommodation hosts, who we hope to see again next year, especially our hosts in Conques, Manu and Flo. It was so incredibly awesome that we will be back again next year.
All accommodation was very good quality with one exception, and meals were adequate although dietary requirements were not noted. Route guidance worked very well.
The scenery on this section is nothing short of spectacular. The towns and villages are beautiful, the people and food along the way are exceptional.
The trip was very good. It was lovely to see the countryside especially the wildflowers and the cattle. Interesting experiences with food and accommodations, some wonderful some mediocre. As a way of seeing rural France it was great.
