Itinerary

Let the Loire River’s gentle currents guide your wheels through the wild heart of France. The Cycle the Loire – Nevers to Orléans tour is a seven-day, easy-paced self-guided bicycle trip ideal for experienced travelers and seniors seeking leisurely exploration of unspoiled landscapes and grand chateaux.

Begin in Nevers and follow the newest section of the ‘Loire à vélo’ cycle path, pedaling past ancient bridges, nature reserves, and rolling vineyards. Each day offers the chance to stop in storybook villages, explore historic castles, and marvel at the wild beauty of the riverbanks. Your journey culminates in Orléans, a city celebrated for its art, history, and Joan of Arc’s enduring legacy.

A standout feature of this tour package is its focus on the lesser-known, untamed stretches of the Loire, where you’ll encounter fewer crowds and more authentic experiences. With all accommodations, meals, and logistics arranged, you can fully immerse yourself in the region’s charm and tranquility.

For those who dream of cycling through France’s most evocative river valley, this trip promises a perfect blend of relaxation, discovery, and timeless landscapes.

day 1Arrive Nevers

Nevers is a charming town at the confluence of the Loire and Nievre rivers and has many historic buildings despite being heavily bombed in WWII. Its typical ‘faience’ (pottery) workshops date from the 16th century and the Ducal Palace is considered to be one of the first chateaux of the Loire. The Magny-Cours circuit, a Formula 1 racetrack until 2008, is nearby. Nevers is also a place of pilgrimage as it is where Bernadette Soubirous of Lourdes became a nun at St Gildard convent, dying here in 1879. She was beatified and later canonised in 1933. Nevers' Saint-Arigle covered food market is open from Tuesday to Saturday.
