Relax on one of the many sand beaches
Walk to Cabo Sao Vicente, the most south-westerly point of continental Europe
Craving sea breezes and untouched beauty? Portugal’s remote Algarve coastline is yours to discover on the 'Walking in Portugal - Remote Coastal Trails' tour. Tailored for experienced travelers who appreciate a leisurely pace, this 8-day guided walking trip leads you from Sagres to Faro, immersing you in dramatic cliffs, secluded beaches, and charming villages.
Your journey begins in Sagres, a laid-back town perched on Europe’s southwestern tip. Each day, enjoy easy walks along the Rota Vicentina, a famed long-distance path that takes you to Cabo Sao Vicente, continental Europe’s most south-westerly point. The scenery is ever-changing: turquoise seas, limestone stacks, and quiet sandy bays beckon you to pause and soak in the view.
Highlights include the iconic Ponta de Piedade, where jagged cliffs and hidden arches frame the brilliant Atlantic, and the picturesque Seven Hanging Valleys trail, famed for its breathtaking coastal panoramas and secret coves. Between walks, sample fresh seafood and crisp local wines—Portugal’s culinary scene is as memorable as its landscapes.
With comfortable hotel accommodations, seamless transport, and expert guidance included, this walking tour lets you focus on the joy of exploration. The unique selling point? An intimate encounter with Portugal’s wild, unspoilt coastlines—far from the crowds, yet rich in natural wonders and authentic flavors. Ideal for travelers who relish relaxed adventure, cultural charm, and the restorative power of the sea.
When I initially booked the trip I was under the impression from the description that the hotel had a pool, I was disappointed when I found out from others that this was not the case, I had planned to chill out by the pool on the free day. However having said that the hotel was very good and the breakfast was lovely. Regarding the walks, some of them were not as long as the description and I wouldn’t describe them as remote
The Explore experience remote coastal walking holiday was a great experience. The walks were very easy and enjoyable nothing hard, we had to take hiking boots off on one walk due to path was a bit flooded. Martin our guide was an excellent guide and a brilliant lunch provider. His skills at providing 3/4 course meals on the go was excellent. The meals at various restaurants at night were well thought out. Not much for vegetarians. I would recommend the holiday great experience and you get to meet people from around the world. The only downside was hotel didn’t have a pool. It was a very clean hotel all rooms were painted in different colours, very big rooms. Unfortunately no kettles in your room. Clean rooms nice staff. The taxis we’re waiting to take us to the start of the walks and returning us back to the hotel.
Martin went above and beyond as our guide.
Trip was beyond my expectations at every level
Perfect week. Great leader, good company with like minded people and good varied walks. Well organised
Lydia was excellent, always ready to help
An exceptional tour with Ester, the most proactive, professional, friendly and helpful guide ever. She made everything a delight. The scenery was extraordinary, the routes varied each day, and, in general, pretty easy to navigate. Ester was quite vigilant in areas that were challenging. When I had a challenge with my toe, Ester came to the rescue with a pair of toe socks - something I’d not heard of before (do take note as it would be wise to bring a pair). Things like this could have taken my holiday in different direction. Each night we were taken to a wide selection of fabulous restaurants. The family run hotel had simple, clean, and highly functional facilities. Breakfast was very good. Highly recommend.
Great trip, well organised with varied walks and the walking well matched to the grading. Really enjoyed the variety of options for dinner in the evenings too. Friendly comfortable hotel and most of all, a great guide. Ester was friendly, helpful and well organised and very much a part of the group.
Ester Galindo was a very good guide, she was very welcoming, approachable and took time to check that everyone on the trip was okay and felt comfortable with the planned walks. She also researched and provided information for things for us to do on our free day. I feel that she really cared and wanted all involved to have a enjoyable and positive trip.
The trip was fantastic, the walks were great with some of the best coastlines I have ever seen & our tour leader Ester was amazing.
Ester is an absolutely fantastic, highly experienced, informative tour leader who led a brilliant tour in April 2025. The walking and scenery were wonderful and she took us to different restaurants everyday, enabling us to sample different, delicious cuisines. The itinerary was excellent and the only change I would suggest would be to change the 7 Hanging Valleys trail to earlier in the week, as it was very crowded and therefore quite a disappointment after all our lovely, quiet trails. We had a great group, the hotel staff and family-run taxi firm were lovely and extremely helpful. The breakfast was delicious, with lots of variety! I would highly recommend this trip!
Brilliant trip very relaxing Excellent guide
Another fantastic walking tour in Portugal with a great leader, group, hotel and itinerary.
As a solo traveller, I always enjoy Explore’s walking trips and this was no exception. The hotel is a small, comfortable and friendly place serving great breakfasts. Our guide Rocio was helpful, knowledgeable and fun and made sure that my dietary requirements were met at the hotel and recommended restaurants that were suitable. The walking wasn’t too arduous but took us to beautiful, mostly unspoilt areas of The Algarve.
Room had broken TV, broken fridge & no Netflix tour leader fantastic.
Super trip overal. Small, pleasant local hotel with clean rooms and friendly staff. Stunning coastal scenery and lots of spring flowers. Walks not too technical nor arduous. Although the hanging valley walk is not 'remote', it is spectacular and worth doing. Boat trip on the day off was run by a local chap and was very interesting. Enthusiastic leader. Walks included opportunities to swim in the sea most days and there was always the option of a cold beer at the end of each walk.
Stunning coastal scenery. Exposed to the elements. Remote area. Fascinating geological formations. Walks not too challenging.
Our guide Rocio offered an excellent experience during a challenging weather week. We saw beautiful scenery, hiked a variety of types of trails and learned along the way. Her knowledge and positive, proactive approach made for an extremely memorable trip.
Very good walking holiday Weather was wet sometimes and waterproofs and fleeces for evening needed in March. Lovely area and interesting walks, not difficult at any point. Great guide and comfortable hotel near SPAR. Most days there are coffee stops and 9/9.30 starts so relaxed and with great restaurants in evening. It’s scenic if you like cliffs but it’s not remote. Even in early March there were always other walkers and the best viewpoints often had crowds of people. Usual efficient Explore organisation. Recommended if you like easy/moderate walking with mature/retired interesting people.
Excellent walking week based in Sagres which is a popular town with surfers. Some good bars and restaurants.
It's pushing it a bit to list this as remote coastal walks, seven hanging valleys is very touristy, with hundreds of people walking. The other four walks were great and lived up to expectations. There is plenty to do and see in Sagres, a very welcoming and hospitable town. The hotel was, as described and totally adequate for the duration. Peter, the guide was great and went above and beyond the role of guide. The restaurants near the hotel were all excellent and are recommended.
A great week exploring the South West coast of Portugal. Walks were varied and well set out. Our tour leader, Kathleen, was excellent. Relaxed, informative and knowledgeable. Hotel was very good, with large rooms and a good breakfast choice.
Kathleen was an excellent tour leader with a strong knowledge of Portugal. Casa Azul was an excellent base with friendly and helpful staff. Nice large clean rooms and a substantial breakfast.
