day 1Lisbon (Portugal)
Welcome to Lisbon! Portugal’s vibrant capital and our home for the first two nights of our adventure. After meeting your small group of fellow explorers, we’ll kick off our journey with a group dinner in the historic Alfama district – Lisbon's oldest neighbourhood. It’s a nest of cobblestone alleys, pastel-coloured homes, and hidden bars and eateries just waiting to be discovered with every turn. As we weave through, spot clotheslines criss-crossed on narrow streets, potted plants perched on wrought-iron balconies and hear friendly chatter drift out from windows – it's easy to imagine what local life must be like here. At dinner, we’re in for a real treat as our meal will be accompanied by a traditional Fado performance. Prepare to be moved by this passionate artform that dates back to the early 1800s: typically a combination of atmospheric guitar and haunting, soaring vocals whose lyrics tell melancholic tales of love, loss and nostalgia. The evening’s soulful folk songs are sure to leave a lasting impression. What a start to our journey! And here’s to an incredible ten days ahead.

Amazing Tour leader Great bunch of participants Driver was nice eye candy :-)
We absolutely loved the tour with Back-roads, our guide Patrizia and driver Ilidio were fabulous, very accommodating and knowledgeable. We visited beautiful towns and learned about the history and culture of Portugal. The hotels were great and dinning amazing, with a good balance of organised and free time. We had a wonderful group of people on our tour and Patrizia brought us all together as a team. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Back-Roads, and will use them again in the future.

The balance of organised activities and free time was perfect, the accommodation was excellent, and the food and wine were outstanding. Patrizia's recommendations for places to eat during our free time were always spot on. We couldn't have asked for a better experience and would highly recommend Back-Roads. We're already looking forward to booking our next tour!
The countryside is beautiful as are the little villages. I would like to have spent longer in the smaller towns and villages than in the cities. there were a lot of churches and palaces and religious sites - and the history around these was excellent. Perhaps a variation from these eg : visiting smaller family run businesses and enterprises and coastal areas adds more depth to the culture of the country today and how people live - which interests me.
A great way to see Portugal. Traveling along on the by roads. A small number of people on the tour. So much more intimate and friendly. Our guide was very knowledgeable on points of interest and historical information. Would do it again Accommodation was excellent too.
