From Strasbourg to Basel, the "Alsace by Bike" tour is a vibrant 8-day cycling journey through the heart of one of France’s most beautiful wine regions. Experienced travelers and seniors with a love for moderate cycling will find this self-guided trip an ideal way to explore the villages, vineyards, and rolling farmland of Alsace.
Pedal along designated bike paths and country backroads, past Hansel-and-Gretel-style houses and medieval castles. Indulge in Alsace’s gastronomic treats and sample local wines as you wander cobblestone streets and marvel at Romanesque and Baroque architecture. The region’s iconic round-topped hills, or ‘balloons,’ offer panoramic views and a whimsical backdrop for your adventure.
A key highlight of this tour package is its joyful celebration of Alsace’s wine culture, paired with leisurely cycling and storybook scenery—a true wonderland for lovers of food, wine, and history.
Wonderful scenery, seamless luggage service, good hotels and when we had a bike issue, the operator quickly replaced the bike for us. Highly recommend. Only downside was that the sightseeing side of the trip was not well integrated into the bike journey and we had expected some audio guide type information in the App.
Overall, the Alsace cycling trip was a very enjoyable week, with beautiful scenery and well-planned routes. However, some of the accommodation left a bit to be desired — while generally adequate, the twin room setups were not ideal for two friends travelling together, with very small beds, no doors on some bathrooms, and in one case, a bathroom with no door and a window into the bathroom which meant there was no privacy. I’d recommend leaving out the stop in Mulhouse, as the town lacked charm and had little to see or do. It also would have been helpful to be informed in advance that our ride coincided with Bastille Day, as everything was closed — we could have prepared better for the long, hot day on the bike by carrying extra food and water. Communication with the New Zealand team was friendly but often slow.
Although we were a bit apprehensive about a self guided tour - we were very pleased that everything worked out. Loved the places we visited and the variety of accommodation. It was a great adventure.
Lovely bike ride through picturesque countryside and gorgeous villages with half timbered houses. Wine tasting experience was fun, but only time for one a day! Accommodation varied but excellent hotels. Didn't meet anyone else doing the same bike trip which was disappointing.
Lovely ride through the Alsace region!
Great experience overall. Quick and efficient followup to one bike that had computer issues, solved very quickly with complete bike replacement. Personally, I'd prefer shorter distances between stops, as there is so much to see and enjoy in the villages.
Great bike, accommodation good, app useful.
Had a lot of fun cycling through the French countryside.
Strasbourg to Basil. What a hidden gem the Alsace region is. Loved the whole trip. Even though reasonably fit , would recommend electric bikes for the few hills and because the weather was hot. Lost connection on app a few times but maybe because we had older phones. Also ran out of power on phone before the end of the days trip. Provided with a map on paper. Did get lost a few times but were able to self correct. But what wasn’t there to love. Cycling through medieval villages ,endless vineyards, next to canals and stunning countryside. Enjoying the traditional cuisine, high quality wines and the culture which seems to be unique, even within France. Accommodation pleasant, a few had no air conditioning which was only a problem when temperatures high. Would definitely do another cycling trip, although it would be hard to match the fun we had on this one!
Pleasant trip through the Alsace Wine Route.
