India bike tours combine high adventure with cultural experiences. Climb some of the highest roads in the world in the Himalayas, glide past the pretty paddy fields and dreamy backwaters of Kerala, and ride along the enchanting coast of peninsular India. Spiti to Ladakh is one of the most incredible India bike tours — you’ll pass beautiful lakes, fruit orchards, Buddhist monasteries, grazing Himalayan blue sheep, and high-altitude deserts. For a very different desert vibe, head to Rajasthan, where you can cycle through the lake city of Udaipur and get lost-in-the-sand hamlets, crossing magnificent forts, historical palaces, and medieval havelis (traditional Indian mansions). Start your exploration of India’s long, scenic western coastline from Maharashtra and see beautiful beaches like Palolem and quaint villages like Tarkarli. Meghalaya in northeast India is not on the mainstream biking circuit but offers some of the best bike tours. Check out our favorite bike tours in India below.

India Bicycle Tour Reviews

Honest insights from past guests on our Bicycle India tours

Great trip covering highlights of Kerala. Fabulous tour leader and support team. The rides started easy and flat, and became progressively harder with increasingly longer hills as we headed into the mountains. The slow pace suited my ability. The spinning classes I did as preparation definitely paid off. The heat and humidity were challenging! Road conditions were better than expected. The bikes could have been in better condition- the mechanic was great in sorting out issues on the way. Most of the participants missed their various connecting flights arranged by Explore, including us! Arriving at 5am and having to be prepared to cycle at 8.30am wasn’t fun! Explore really need to consider this as I think it’s a regular occurrence!

My recent trip to India was fantastic. It exceeded my expectations. Our guide, Kathy, left no the detail undone. From walking in the gardens in the early morning to drinking a Chai with the locals, The sites we saw were exceptional and will live in my memory forever

Real India on wheels

Our first cycling adventure with Exodus (after a great various activity tour to Vietnam last year) and this tour was just perfect for my husband and I as we love being active. However we still enjoyed the free days to explore and the sightseeing too. We had a great group and excellent guides. It was also our first trip to India and we felt as though we saw the real India, especially in the first week. The people were so friendly and they never stopped smiling and waving at us. The bikes were very good quality and suited to the mixed terrain. The hotels were generally of a good standard although a couple not so much but appreciate that it’s not always easy to find suitable accommodation in certain areas.

Beautiful and Exhilarating coast to coast ride

A perfect mix of scenic backroads and vibrant town streets, offering an authentic glimpse into India’s culture. The locals were incredibly friendly, always greeting us with smiles and curiosity as we passed through their villages. Kerala’s relaxed vibe, combined with its stunning landscapes, made every ride a joy. Our tour leader was outstanding—knowledgeable, approachable, and always ready with helpful tips or an encouraging word during the challenging climbs. From the breathtaking tea plantations to the tranquil backwaters, every moment was memorable. Highly recommend this trip for those seeking adventure, cultural immersion, and great camaraderie!

Excellent trip to Kerela. Such variety in this trip. Feels like we’ve been away for a month rather than two weeks we saw and did so much. Absolutely brilliant. The contrast between the beach, the midlands and the highlands was fabulous. The home stay was top rate. Felt so relaxed and comfortable and the home cooked food by Grace was incredible. Highly recommend.

We could not have wanted more from the trip or Sam our leader, both exceeded expectations. The accommodation was by and large good however a few venues could have been better located (particularly Cochin) and the home stay was very basic but what do you expect?! Cycling really made it an immersive experience and given the heat and humidity, the amount of cycling was judged right. I must finish by saying Sam the leader was excellent in his patience and wonderfully sincere and informed commentary.

Highlights of India bike tours

  • Pedal past coconut farms on the pleasant route from Somnath to Diu, with the option of taking a detour to visit the Gir National Park, home of Asiatic lions.
  • Discover the heart of India, away from the tourist hordes, in the beautiful Maikal Hills. The hills provide a glorious backdrop to a cycling route that passes by jungles, village homes of the local Gond people, and wildlife reserves like Bandhavgarh.
  • Explore famous cities like Delhi-Agra-Jaipur on a Golden Triangle tour and see iconic monuments like the Taj Mahal, Humayun’s Tomb, and Hawa Mahal on some of the best bike tours of India.
  • Cycle through the idyllic coffee plantations of Coorg, cross the spice plantations of Wayanad, lose yourself in the historic city of Mysore, and discover the foothills of the Nilgiri mountains on the superb Bengaluru-Cochin circuit.
  • See terraced paddy fields, tea gardens, and Buddhist monasteries on a bike tour in India in the small, picturesque northeastern state of Sikkim, away from the big cities.

Travel tips for bike tours in India

  • Traffic on Indian roads can be notoriously chaotic — this is true for cities and highways, so it’s important to be very focused no matter which part of the country you’re biking in. But the great thing is you don’t need to stick to the highway; village roads have less traffic, and some of the most scenic cycling routes pass agricultural fields.
  • Since Hindi is spoken by at least 40% of the country (and understood by more), it will be helpful to know a few key phrases before hitting the road, especially in north and central India.
  • Large swathes of India are uncomfortably hot from April to October, so plan your India bike tours accordingly.
