Food Tours in Greece

If you love the idea of food tours, Greece is an outstanding destination to try fresh, local and innovative cuisines. Start your culinary adventures in Athens with Greek coffee brewed the traditional way and kouloúria (chewy and crunchy bread rings). Explore authentic Greek flavors, roam the city’s colorful bazaars and visit hidden tavernas on one of our food tours in Greece. A food tour in Thessaloniki is a deep dive into this culturally rich city. Walk through the old markets and try treats like siropiasta (a syrupy sweet that originated in Turkey and Asia Minor) and a Thessaloniki-styled meat-filled bougatsa (Greek breakfast pastry). The Greek Isles have highly evolved culinary traditions of their own. Food tours in Crete, the largest Greek island, include visits to local olive oil producers and vineyards and sampling local favorites like dakos (small bread layered with tomatoes and olives), slow-cooked lamb, and soupia ( a seafood dish made of cuttlefish and spinach). Well balanced, just so interesting!!! Tour director Lisa was passionate and shared so much with us. Driver Alexis was helpful and calm, the local experts were excellent. So much history in such a beautiful country!

The mainland component of this tour was great, but the ferries out to the islands were pretty challenging with so many people and never ending chaos embarking and disembarking the ferries. However, once on the islands (Santorini and Mykonos) it was indeed a magical experience.

The itinerary for this trip was great, a nice mix of planned adventures and free time. I felt like we did and saw so much but also had time to relax at the beach or pool.

The Greek Wanderer was an awesome trip around four separate islands (Syros, Paros,Naxos & Santorini) -each different & interesting. Loved it all. The transfer on ferries between islands is quite a process with lining up, crowd jostling, hauling suitcases, managed exceptionally well by our experienced guide Charlotte. Greek food is awesome with fresh salads, local herbs and warm freshly baked breads. The hi light for me were the hikes. Some were a ramble, others were more challenging but each was sensational. Stone walled laneways, mountain vistas, donkeys, horses, wild herbs of thyme, dill, rosemary perfuming the air. Poles & good walking boots made it comfortable & safe. Our wonderful guide Charlotte, ensured everyone was catered for. With varying levels of fitness & desire to get hot & sweaty, Charlotte always offered alternate activities. You could remain at the hotel enjoying the pool, stroll around local sites or do partial walks & catch a local bus back to accommodation. The accommodation was basic but adequate. With mostly private family run businesses they offered a more personal touch. Some hotels lacked lifts (stairs only), so best keep your luggage as lightweight as possible. Our sensational guide Charlotte ensured all ran like clockwork. Buses, ferries, taxis, museums, restaurants were all organised & details communicated to each member of the group via WhatsApp. I would recommend this trip.

The local guides make the archeological sites come alive. It is easy to see why the monasteries are a UNESCO site. The stop at the family owned olive grove was wonderful in atmosphere, in learning about and tasting olive oil. It was a fabulous lunch and a relaxing atmosphere. The music and dancing were a highlight. The stops for the seaside lunch and in the seaside town were delightful. Insight would be better off letting people find dinner on their own than attending the first 2 hotel dinners that were poor at best. The Greek food is spectacular so to be "provided" such poor meals was a real downfall and not up to Insights normal standards.

Chose that tour so I could experience the mainland of Greece as well as the islands. Probably would have preferred 2 nights on each island instead of 3 with Crete included. The mainland was beautiful with so much history and excellent local guides. The weather was perfect in May. Would definitely recommend the tour!
