Do you want to enjoy the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu but have limited time or don't want to embark on a multi-day trek? Try this express tour that includes only one full day of trekking leading to a Machu Picchu guided tour on the second day.
Start with a dream train ride to the checkpoint going from the Sacred Valley to the rainforest. Start at kilometer 104 instead of kilometer 82 while still ensuring you get a taste of the stunning natural environment offered by the cloud forest. Hike along the Inca Trail and enjoy the chance to see Machu Picchu twice. Visit the ancient archaeological site of Wiñay Wayna and enter Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate to end up in Aguas Calientes before your big tour on the second day. Discover this excellent short version of the Inca Trail!
The short tour to Machu Picchu starts with a pick-up from your hotel at 4 am to catch the train from Ollantaytambo. The train follows the trail of the Urubamba River until we reach Km 104, where we'll begin our trek. Along the way, you’ll see spectacular views of farmlands, snow-capped mountains, and the mighty Urubamba River.
Once you’re off the train and ready to go, we’ll provide you with snacks and take a group photo. Then we’ll set off to visit our first Inca site. We’ll give you a short orientation about this historical Inca site as well as a walking tour. Then we’ll begin hiking as we head for the Classic Inca Trail. We'll have tremendous views of Machu Picchu, the Urubamba River, and other surrounding Inca Sites.
After hiking for three hours, we’ll reach the most beautiful Incan site on the Inca Trail, Wiñay Wayna (Forever Young) at 2,600 m/8,500 ft. Few people get the opportunity to see these elaborate water fountains, temples and agricultural terraces. These provide a perfect opportunity to learn about the history of the Incas. The backdrop of this site is a dramatic cliff drop with beautiful mountains surrounding the area.
A few minutes of walking from there and you’ll arrive at the Alpaca Expeditions campsite used by hikers who have chosen to do the Classic Inca Trail. Here you’ll be able to enjoy the hot homemade lunch that’s been freshly cooked by Alpaca Expeditions’ chefs. You’ll also get a chance to refill your water and get a little rest after you’ve eaten.
From Wiñay Wayna, we’ll walk to the Sun Gate. This is where we’ll see the picturesque landscape of the famous Machu Picchu. After taking in the once-in-a-lifetime views, we’ll begin our descent to Machu Picchu.
One of the many advantages of this trek is that by the time you reach Machu Picchu the day travelers will have left. This leaves you the whole area to explore with no interruptions. After taking photos and exploring the area, we’ll take the bus down to Aguas Calientes and head to your hotel. After that, we’ll head to Indio Feliz for dinner (included). This restaurant is considered to have the best food in Aguas Calientes. After dinner, we recommend going to bed early to make the most of the next day.
Today will be all about Machu Picchu. To get the most out of the day we encourage every group to have an early breakfast before catching one of the first buses up to Machu Picchu (starting at 5:30 am). This allows you to get ahead of the crowds. The bus ride from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu takes approximately 30 minutes.
Once in Machu Picchu, your guide will take you directly to the best place to watch the sunrise and take photographs. Your local guide will then show you around the main sectors of the citadel for a total of 2.5 hours. During this guided tour you’ll learn more about the history and culture of the Inca Empire.
At the end of the guided tour, you’ll have some time to yourself to relax and wander around, unless you arranged to hike Huayna Picchu (must be booked in advance, as it sells out, and costs $75 per person). Your guide will show you where to begin this hike. The hike will take no more than 2 hours round-trip.
For your return from Machu Picchu, we recommend heading back to Aguas Calientes no later than 2 hours before your train departure. The return train rode from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo will take approximately 2 hours. In Ollantaytambo, our Alpaca Expeditions’ staff will be waiting for you right by the station’s exit door. They’ll be ready to bring you back to Cusco by car. The car ride to Cusco will be approximately 2 hours and will have you dropped off at your hotel in Cusco.
Machu Picchu Mountain may be hiked as well instead of Huayna Picchu Mountain. This hike is more challenging and takes three hours minimum round-trip (at an extra cost of USD $75 per person).
"Excellent tour! We (50f, & 2 teens) found this tour operator from great reviews and had a great experience. Two-day Incra train tour with hotel. Clear and thorough communication before and during the tour. (Definitely follow tips about needing 6mos on passport, collecting and rechecking baggage in Lima, and arriving at least 2 days before tour for acclimation to altitude.) One of our group had altitude sickness so bad they couldn't do the hike, and the company helped us find an alternative so one of us could still do the hike and two of us took the train all the way to Aguas Calientes and were still able to tour Machu Picchu on the second day. Excellent service and hotel. Wouldn't go with another company.
I joined the 2 day Machu Picchu hike with this travel operator. The communication prior to hike was great. They answered all my questions. Our tour guides Reynaldo and Marizol were great. Very friendly, very knowledgeable and really made it a great hike. The hotel we stayed in Agua Caliente was clean and comfortable with good breakfast. 👍🏻
Amazing trip, 2 Days and 1 Night with the two of us. Unfortunately I got a knee injury a couple days earlier and could walk very little, especially walking down was painful. After explaining this to the tour operator, I could still do the expedition and join at 17:00 pm on day1 and thus still visit Machu Picchu together on Day 2. My girlfriend did the hike on Day 1 without me which made me a bit scared. The hike is still a challenge. Our guide Renaldo suggested to call her during lunch to see how she was doing. Before lunch, he also sent a video of how she was doing. I really appreciate his effort of contacting me the first day although I was not hiking on Day 1. Day 2 we did together and it was amazing, the view, the civilization, the rituals, the stories, the company. On Day2, Renaldo put extra effort and asked if I could see Machu Picchu from above, which you only could see if you hiked on Day1. Via a shortcut I could walk up and still see Picchu from above. Really really appreciate this. Thank you.
My husband and I did the 2 Day Inca trail with this company and are very happy with the tour. Lucio was our guide for the 2 days. He knew a lot about the flora and fauna of the place, the cultural history and Incan spirituality . We had an amazing hike, with great sweeping views of the mountains and coating Inca sites. it was challenging and it also turnout to be a hot day. Lucio made sure we kept good time and made suggestions for rest breaks. He connected with us really well over the hike. The lunch stop was great, Marco the cook prepared very healthy and delicious meals and the pleasure of eating fresh food on after a strenuous 3 hours on the is something else. Day 2 of visiting the actual site seemed like the grand finale of the journey. By then we had a great understanding of the Incan history. Overall a very memorable trip for us!
"We did the 2D/1N trip to Machu Picchu. Our tour guides David and Ciprian are truly great people and made sure everyone was taken care of. Ciprian was carrying someone’s backpack to help them out, for the entire 8 mile hike. I got a stomach flu during the second morning and had to miss part of the 2nd day but David gave me a personal tour of Machu Picchu when I started feeling better. That’s when I found out how truly knowledgeable David was because I asked so many questions and David gave detailed and extremely educated responses. Because of this, I have a much deeper understanding and appreciation of the Incas and their culture. David didn’t have to give me a make up tour of Machu Picchu, but he did so out of kindness and care. Besides the gorgeous views all around and our exceptional tour guides, the next highlight for me was the lunch. We had lunch around 1pm and we were all surprised at how they managed to cook such amazing food without a kitchen. It was better food than some restaurants we had in Cuzco. There was avocado dip and fried wanton, chicken + mango ceviche, lomo saltado, potatoes, battered trout, apple water, various vegetables, and apple pie. The food was truly *chefs kiss* and maybe the best food we’ve had on a hike ever. I highly recommend this tour and our tour guides David and Ciprian"
