Itinerary
The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is widely regarded as one of the best hikes in the world. It is also one of the most approachable, as no special skills are required to complete it – although good health and fitness will certainly help you make the journey from the trailhead to Machu Picchu.
Compared to other famous treks, this trail is relatively short, making it perfect for those with limited time. Despite its length, the route is incredibly diverse and captivating: along the way you will encounter fascinating ruins, snow-capped peaks, beautiful waterfalls, and lush jungle. At the end of the trail, you will pass through the Sun Gate for your first glimpse of Machu Picchu – an unforgettable view of the ruins from above at their most breathtaking.

day 1Cusco - Piskacucho Km 82 - Llactapata- Ayapata
The team will pick you up from your hotel at 4:30 a.m. and drive for about two hours to the Porters’ House in Ollantaytambo, where our trekking chef will have a delicious breakfast waiting for you.
After breakfast, we will continue for another hour to the trailhead at Piscacucho, also known as Kilometer 82. Upon arrival, you will have time to organize your gear and prepare for the adventure ahead before we begin our journey along the ancient path of the Incas.
Our first stop will be Llactapata, the first Inca site on the trail. From here, we will hike for another two hours until we reach our lunch spot, where our team of porters and trekking chefs will have the campsite set up and a freshly prepared hot meal ready for you. All meals are cooked on the spot, and you will also have the chance to refill your camel bags with safe, drinkable water.
After a well-deserved rest, we will continue hiking for about two more hours until we reach Ayapata, our campsite for the night. Here you will enjoy dinner prepared by our chef and then relax under the open sky, surrounded by silence and nature, before resting for the next day’s adventure.

Incredible Inca Experience
A challenging and rewarding trek made unforgettable by an excellent team of guides and porters. Over 4 days of trekking we saw enormous and beautiful Andes mountains, countless flora, many birds, llamas, coati, and several Inca archeological sites, concluding with Machu Picchu. The Inca sites on the trail were much more secluded than Machu Picchu and we had time to explore them at our leisure. The Inca trail itself is an impressive feat - a stone path tracing through the mountains, up & down slopes. Climbing a set of Inca stairs at high altitude in a cloud forest was an unforgettable experience. I recommend having a base level of fitness and using trekking poles to better enjoy the hike.

We had the most incredible experience with Alpaca Expeditions. Our tour guide Ethel Paola was incredible. We learned so much on the trail, she let us set the pace and she was a blast to spend meals with. King (chef) Julian outdid himself every meal and kept us surprised at his creativity. The group of porters we had were incredible and always making sure we were taken care of. The bond they have was like a family and we felt it the entire trip. We had the best time and thanks to La Pachamama, we lucked out with the most beautiful weather and experience. Thank you!
Fantastic Peru team for a difficult hike
We did the 4 day 3 night Inca trail with Alpaca Expedition. The trail was difficult due to uneven, slippery steps, steep inclines, and long days. We were rewarded with historic Inca sites and spectacular views. The Alpaca team was great. The porters carried heavy loads so we can have comfortable tents and warm water after each day. The chef made delicious meals every day. The guides ensured our safety and provided history and local information. The tents and other equipment are top notch quality. All made this hike a memorable experience. . I would choose Alpaca again.
The BEST TOUR I've ever been on, hands-down!
I can't recommend this tour enough. Well organized, amazing experience. Hiking was beautiful and the porters and staff were so hard working, they carried everything, set-up camp for us every day/night and allowed guests to immerse in the magic of the Incan culture and natural beauty unencumbered. Also - the food, which was cooked fresh every day for breakfast, lunch and dinner was delicious, healthy and made with care.
