Experience the ancient pilgrimage trails of Sicily's Camino. Travel by foot along the 'regie trazzere' or ancient road from Palermo and the Tyrrhenian Sea in the north to Agrigento on the southern Mediterranean coast to discover the rugged beauty of inland Sicily with its archaeological treasures and friendly locals who have been welcoming pilgrims for centuries. The Magna Via Francigena was officially re-opened in 2017 in celebration of its rich historical legacy as a trade route connecting Africa and the Middle East to Europe. It runs through ancient landscapes to extraordinary villages clinging to the cliffs and some suprisingly green hills among lakes and rolling mountains. However what is striking about the Magna Via Francigena is the influence of those who occupied the land over the years, from the Greeks and Romans, to the people of Byzantium and the Moors, and the legacies they left behind in the form of mozaics and other ancient relics, traditions and culinary influences. On arrival in Agrigento, dip your toes into the sea, receive your Testamonium at the cathedral and revel in the satisfaction of having walked across Sicily.
Our Magna via Francigena trek in early April was a great success. We were lucky to have mostly sunny weather with fabulous wild flowers- a fabulous combination. The accommodation was somewhat a mixed bag but the staff were friendly and helpful throughout. Adding a couple of days in Palermo was definitely worth doing.
Information provided about each day's walking was comprehensive, up to date and easily accessible. Directions to accommodation were generally good but in some cases not 100% accurate. In those cases we had to rely on signs or trial and error. Baggage transfers were all fine and those wanting a day off could be taken to the next stop with the bags.
Walking the Magna Via Francigena was challenging - many steep hills, mud and rain. They organised everything else so that all we had to do was walk, making the walk much easier. The scenery was stunning.
Terrific walk, going through picturesque villages, interesting rural countryside and some lovely forested areas. Features some amazing views. A substantial proportion is walking on paved roads, but the best bits are walking on single track or rural dirt roads.
A fantastic experience! You will be welcomed by locals and have plenty of hills. Their organisation is seamless.
A wonderful journey through Sicily's lesser-known interior. Beautiful hilltop towns, rolling hills of olives, vines. Staggering mountain scenery. Friendly and welcoming people. Delicious food and wine. A slice of Heaven! And, as always, the people at UTracks made it go like clockwork. I did the easy bit!
Loved walking the Magna via Francigena in Sicily with UTracks; everything was very well organised, lots of useful information shared in advance and beautiful countryside and villages to walk through.
They did a fanastic job organizing our trip, and were very responsive to iur queries and requests while we were en-route. The walk itself was spectacular although I would not recommend doing it in mid summer (as we did) because of the heat and lack of shade on large sections of the walk.
The company provides a level of service that looks after the detail (baggage, accomm. route etc) and lets you concentrate on getting the best out of the walk.
Excellent organisation throughout, the information provided in advance was thorough, accurate and detailed. All the plans ran smoothly and as advertised. Highly recommended.
