Greatest trip of my life

Trekking through Upper Mustang was one of the best experiences of my life. The landscapes were the most breathtaking I’ve ever seen, and the cultural experience—monasteries, villages, and local traditions—was unforgettable. My guide, Rammesh, was absolutely amazing. He was knowledgeable, caring, and made the trek feel smooth, safe, and deeply meaningful. I can’t imagine a better guide.

Everest Base Camp Trek review by Julian Pomery

I'm 70. I had a yearning to see Everest since I was quite young. As I grew older, I hoped to do the trip with my sons but the length of the trip was not conducive. I wasn't particularly fit but trained for a few months beforehand, not knowing if I could manage the amount of walking , let alone the unknown element of altitude. Arriving in Kathmandu, the hotel was excellent and we had time to visit the old city of Thamel. The flight to Lukla was a great experience in a small plane, next the start of the trek. The 'Teahouses' along the way offered a warm convivial welcome, with varying numbers of other trekkers present. Suspension-bridge crossings, some several hundred metres long were great! We were lucky to have clear visibility and sunshine nearly every day as we progressed ever higher amid awe-inspiring scenery, expertly led by our leader Valerie Parkinson, and Nepalese guide Saroje. Our yakman Nawang took care of all our luggage except for our light daysacks. We gazed up at Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Macalu, Pumori, to name but a few peaks. From various vantage points including the aptly named Everest View Hotel, we had excellent views of Everest with the South Summit and South Col. We experienced at first hand the logistical marvel of how everything is transported up here; by yak, mule, dzo or porter. Bird-life included Vultures and Golden Eagles soaring overhead, plus Tibetan Snow birds that took a fancy to my lemon drizzle cake on Kala Patthar during our final acclimatisation trek. After taking in the Kumbhu Glacier, we reached Gorak Shep before the final push to Everest Base Camp itself. Unlike most other treks, we had ample time at Base Camp rock before the short walk to one of the expedition camps where we stayed overnight, amongst an array of camps looking like something out of a Bond movie. We witnessed a massive avalanche, and spent time on the ice shelf, truly surreal amongst the surrounding peaks. Overall, it was tough but an utterly amazing experience, in the competent hands of our leader Valerie, a lifetime goal achieved.

Excellent

I had a great experience overall and I’m thankful for such a great tour! I enjoyed the solo-ish group makeup and am excited to see what other solo-ish trips will come out.

Excellent

This was a trip I will never forget. Such great people who joined the trip, a CEO with good control, overview and looked after us all. I had a lot of fun and will recommend Solo ish to friends and family. Thanks for the trip and thanks to Jamona!

Excellent

This was my very first trip with G adventures and I could not be more pleased. Communication prior to the trip was good and I did not feel as if I was left in the dark. The places we visited were really great even during monsoon season. I was apprehensive about traveling on a solo-ish tour but the small group size made it easy for everyone to become friends. The CEO was an excellent resource for knowledge and helping us better understand the culture in Nepal.

Planning tips for solo travelers to Nepal

Safest destinations in Nepal for single travelers

Nepal’s warm, community-centered culture makes it a surprisingly safe destination for solo travelers, including women and those from marginalized backgrounds. Violent crime is rare, particularly in popular areas like Kathmandu, Pokhara, and the well-trodden trekking routes of Annapurna and Everest. Nepal's trekking trails themselves are generally safe, with a strong presence of fellow trekkers, licensed guides, and tea house communities along the way, creating a built-in support network. Keep your wits about places and circumstances; pay heed to local advice on the trail and stick to the popular routes. In crowded markets petty theft can occur, so keeping your valuables safe is common sense. Women often report feeling secure and respected across Nepal but it is wise to not travel alone too late into the night and avoid shady venues and dim streets. Language barriers are minimal in tourist zones, as many Nepalese speak functional English. LGBTQI+ travelers will find Nepal comparatively progressive for South Asia; however, public displays of affection remain uncommon across the board. Community-based tourism and organized solo tours further enhance safety and cultural sensitivity, providing a reassuring structure for travelers exploring Nepal.

Cost of traveling to Nepal alone

Nepal remains one of the most budget-friendly countries for solo travelers, offering exceptional value without sacrificing experience. Budget backpackers typically spend USD 35–60 per day, covering guesthouse stays, local buses, and satisfying meals. A hearty plate of dal bhat, Nepal’s staple of rice, lentils, and vegetables, often costs under USD 4 at a quality Thakali restaurant. For those seeking a bit more comfort, Bookmundi’s solo trekking tours average around USD 77 per person daily, while other comprehensive solo tours covering the country’s highlgihts—with accommodations, transport, and guided activities—start at roughly USD 120 per day. Solo travelers opting for private rooms should anticipate single supplements of USD 15–30 per night, depending on the property. Despite these modest costs, travelers are rewarded with stunning Himalayan vistas, vibrant culture, and warm local hospitality.
