Cross-country skiing in the Italian Dolomites is more than a sport—it’s a way to soak up the breathtaking alpine scenery at your own pace. The 'Italian Dolomites Cross-country Skiing' trip starts and ends in Dobbiaco, unfolding over 8 days of guided exploration on meticulously prepared trails. With routes suitable for all levels, from beginners to advanced skiers, this tour invites experienced travelers to glide beneath towering limestone peaks and through tranquil forests. Unlike downhill skiing, cross-country focuses on aerobic endurance, making it a rewarding challenge for those who enjoy an active getaway. Your base is a family-run hotel known for its warmth and hospitality—an ideal retreat after invigorating days on the trails. The unique selling point: a carefully curated experience that pairs world-class skiing with the comfort of a welcoming alpine lodge, offering both adventure and relaxation in equal measure.
The Dolomites are a beautiful region and this trip is a fun way to explore it by skii. The itinerary struck a perfect balance between physical activity and relaxation. Each day offered scenic ski routes through pristine, snow-covered landscapes—peaceful forests, frozen lakes, and charming alpine villages. Our guide Michele was not only highly skilled and knowledgeable about the terrain but also enthusiastic and encouraging, making the experience enjoyable for skiers of all levels. Whether you were a first-timer or an experienced skier, you felt supported and challenged in all the right ways. The hotel was cozy and we ate delicious meals—exactly what you want after a day on the trails.
The grade 2 holiday was challenging enough for me. The temperature was a bit high for really good conditions but Michele, the Group Leader, made sure we went to the best places. The hotel was very good and the food high quality., as were our lunch stop restaurants. The group had mixed experience but Michele coped well with this.
My trip lasted two weeks. The first week was grade 4 with Michele. The second was grades 3 and 4 with Michele and Alex.
Uninterrupted sunshine for 7 days helped to make this a week of excellent varied skiing. It was very cold in the mornings and late afternoon. so layers were essential. This was our second stay at this lovely comfortable hotel, with friendly helpful staff, and tasty meals with plenty of choice for all preferences.
As a repeat visitor to this area of the Dolomites I knew exactly what to expect in terms of the village and hotel. The hotel bathrooms are gradually being refurbished, but not mine. But the food is good and the Wellness Centre in the basement is excellent. The owner and her staff are very welcoming and helpful. Much depends on the skiing conditions of any particular visit. This year there had been last minute excellent snow which was tragically washed away by rain shortly before we arrived. However, on the whole, the local community had done excellent work in maintaining the loipen to a high standard. No one could have predicted the -13 degree temperatures but our guide worked hard to ensure we were adequately wrapped up and kept us moving so that we did not get too cold before we could find a sun filled valley to warm us up. The participants were broadly of a similar standard and so the skiing day worked well with options to catch an early bus if anyone preferred this. Alex's knowledge of the loipen meant that we had a really good ski on each of the guided days of the holiday.
The is the perfect place to learn to cross country ski or brush up on your skills. Incredibly beauiful scenery, great instructor/leader and very comfortable accommodations. I loved the spa! The trails were well maintained and we were lucky with the snow.
This was the earliest in the season I've been to Dobbiaco. Although some of the trails had not been prepared and some of the eating places had not opened yet the trip was still really good. The snow had arrived early so the conditions were really good.
A very good week of skiing thanks to Alex and Michele, the group leaders.
Enjoyable trip with knowledgeable and patience guides Michele & Alex. Nothing was too much trouble for them. Improved my technique with satisfying, lovely varied routes each day. Hotel Tschurtschenthaler was clean, comfortable and relaxed with great food
Excellent group, the leaders had extensive knowledge of the area and the sport. Liz was a thoughtful encouraging and inclusive leader. No complaints at all.
A great week's cross country skiing in Dobbiaco. Sunshine and blue skies were great but the snow was getting thin by the end of the week. Hotel was very good. Excellent breakfast buffet and plenty of choice for the evening meal. Wellness suite was great to stretch the muscles after a good day skiing. Efficient bus service to get to different ski areas each day and only a few minutes walk from the hotel.
This was my fifth trip to Dobbiaco, the first as an absolute beginner. The trip was as enjoyable as my first. The first week was grade 3/4. The second was grade 2/3. A hard first week with long days. The second week was more relaxed with more time for a hot chocolate and a sauna on returning to the hotel.
Endless snow covered trails, rugged beautiful scenery, great company......I didn’t want it to end! Possibly my 8th time in Dobiacco but still inspired on new trails and forever in awe of the views. Love going back to the Hotel Tschurtschenthaler which is always welcoming and well situated with plenty of food. How long until next year?
Dobiacco is a really beautiful place and there is lots to do outside the skiing. The skiing tuition is very good, and flexible, as on the level 1/2 week you can move between groups if necessary. Although the loipes feel remote, they are mostly not far from a bus route, so you can stop early if you have really had enough.
When I first cross country skied in Norway 15 years ago, my leader said 'go to Dobbiaco'. And now that I have, I understand why she recommended it. The skiing was excellent and varied, with just the right amount of challenge without being scary. The snow conditions were great and we had good weather. The sceenrybwas stunning. The hotel was very welcoming, and a good wellness centre with sauna, swimming and steam - a perfect way to relax after a day skiing.
I fell in love with the Dolomites, so beautiful. Cross country skiing is an awesome way to see the winter scenery. Our instructors were great. Being first timers we learnt from the best, Liz is an excellent instructor both with verbal queues and demonstrations. Fun exercises to learn safely. It was the best winter adventure and most wonderful Christmas.
Alex our tour leader was brilliant. He was bright, cheerful, knowledgeable, creative and above all stretched us but looked after our safety too.
We had a brilliant week, cross country skiing in Italy. Unfortunately there was not much snow, and it didn't snow while we were there, but artificial snow had been laid for the tracks so we were still able to ski as planned, just not in as many different places. The hotel was lovely and the food was really good. We had good leaders who made every effort to find good tracks to ski, and who helped us all to improve our skills, and the company all week was excellent.
A really well organised week of cross-country skiing with excellent leaders, a great group of people and some fabulous scenery.
Another good week in Dobbiaco. Worries about snow conditions were unnecessary. Most trails were open, although not all had cut tracks. This is one advantage of a major x-c skiing centre - they were busy making artificial snow to improve the tracks used in the marathon that was run shortly before this week, and the World Cup races that were due in a few weeks. Plenty of scope for a grade 3 group.
Yet another great week at Dobbiaco. Tracks were all based on artificial snow, but there was enough of the real stuff to top them up and make everything look pretty. The work done to create tracks was most impressive, and there were plenty to keep us occupied all week. As a regular, it's great to recognised and welcomed back to the Tschurtschenthaler hotel, which fed us as well as ever.
Good, reliable skiing. Even when snow is thin there's always something, and this season conditions were more than adequate - I could finally reach the Cortina cross-country centre (I've been waiting since 1988 to get there).
About my 6th trip back to this lovely area and friendly welcoming hotel. Excellent group, super new spa in hotel and different routes to ski this year....when can I go again please
Ski-ing in the Dolomites is an absolute pleasure - plenty of excellent tracks in stunning scenery - and lots of opportunities for jagertee and strudel
