My wife and I walked over 112 miles on select portions of the Camino Frances. It was our time, as a validation of her recovery from her compound leg fracture of 2024, and before my fairly awful knees give out. They provided a guide, a bus with a driver, and ten other travelers. Our entourage included mostly retired or nearly retired Australian couples, plus a mother and son from Singapore. Our wildflower-festooned walks included creek-bottom trails, cow paths, dark woods, rather bald mountain ascents and descents, road shoulders, wheat fields, Roman roads, city sidewalks, and many small and ancient villages. As expected, our group grew close. Our guide Sergio was amazing, had all the information we needed, walked every step with us, and he would always give us his best advice. Fran, our driver, stayed with the little bus, so we'd see him at the beginnings and ends of the day's trek, and occasionally when the track crossed a road, so he could provide a lift for any of us geezers who might be giving out for the day. The Camino offers time for spiritual reflection, either in solitude as one walks along gorgeous countryside, or in meaningful chats with fellow travelers and strangers encountered, or in a village church or Gothic cathedral with the Holy Spirit. Ten to twelve hilly miles a day tests one's physical endurance. We all have more than you might imagine. We could have stayed.

Itinerary

The ultimate guided walk along the best sections of the Camino across northern Spain for lovers of good food, interesting walks and fabulous hotels. The Camino de Santiago, or Compostela Trail, has for centuries represented an important pilgrimage route from France, across the Pyrenees and the north of Spain to the tomb of St James in Santiago de Compostela. Following the most interesting sections from Roncesvalles in Spain through famous pilgrimage cities such as Leon and Pamplona, the landscapes change daily from mountain trails to forests and open plains. With the camaraderie of a small group and local guide, the trip is fully supported throughout. At night stay in atmospheric towns in a selection of hand picked hotels where the local flavours are introduced by your hosts. This carefully crafted itinerary is a firm favourite with our travellers who are always impressed with the quality of extra touches which make this trip so special.

day 1Arrive Bilbao, meet your guide and transfer to Pamplona

Meet your guide at a central location in Bilbao at 3pm (to be confirmed prior to your departure). If you would like to visit the Guggenheim Museum you can do this in the morning, or stay an extra day in Bilbao - please ask our office for pre tour accommodation rates and suggestions.
After your group meeting there's a brief stop at the Guggenheim Museum to admire the exterior of this architectural masterpiece before we transfer to Pamplona for dinner and overnight.

Meals

12 breakfasts, 12 dinners (beverages and coffee included). Breakfasts are usually continental inclusive of bread or toast, tea and coffee. Dinner may start with soup, rice or pasta, followed by either an egg, chicken, red meat or fish dish & finishing with a dessert of fruit, crême caramel, etc. Dinners can be at the hotel or at local restaurants and in Leon, is a light tapas meal. Please note in Spain dinners are generally served between 8pm – 9.30pm
