Itinerary

Outside the hiking community, few know about the Garfagnana region in northern Tuscany. It’s a hiker’s dream with dramatic mountain trails, wild national parks and spectacular views – a stark contrast to the vineyards and rolling hills of the south. Join an expert tour leader to explore the most beautiful trails in the area and return each evening to our stone farmhouse on the lower slopes of the Apennines. Traditional Italian hospitality and good food await, plus there’s a free day to explore nearby Lucca, the Cinque Terre, Florence or Pisa.

Please note: Most departures for this trip are graded Activity Level 3 (Moderate); however, if you’re looking to push yourself, join one of our Activity Level 5 (Challenging) departures to tackle more difficult treks and spend a night in a mountain refuge. See the itinerary for a day-by-day schedule for each Activity Level. Please check the Dates & Prices tab to confirm the Activity Level rating for each departure before booking.

day 1Adventure start at Braccicorti

This tour starts at Agriturismo Braccicorti, approximately 4mi (6km) from Castelnuovo di Garfagnana and two hours from Pisa Airport. Refresh with a dip in the pool or take a short walk to discover the grounds surrounding the property.
Around 6pm, say ciao to your tour leader and fellow travellers, when we gather as a group for the first time to get to know each other and learn more about the adventures ahead. Your tour leader then ensures a big welcome over our first group dinner.
If you want to extend your adventure, consider booking additional nights in Pisa or Florence where there is so much to see. Speak to your sales representative for more information.

Seriously impressive

What a trip - my 6th walking tour with Exodus and utterly blown away by the Challenge 5 hikes amongst the Alpi Apuane and Apennines ranges. This was an astonishing introduction to Tuscany! If you enjoy mountain walks and vast open views this could be your next trip.

Amazing

Great week discovering mountains of Tuscany Accommodation was great; going back in time, with comfort. Food outstanding. A family atmosphere all around. Great hikes, some more difficult, but it was all detailed in notes. Loved the Medieval walled city of Lucca, on day off.

A great week hiking in a beautiful area of Tuscany

Just back from hiking in Northern Tuscany's little known Garfagnana region. Varied walks and terrain with incredible views and a great sense of satisfaction. Really enjoyed the company of our group, the lovely views, pool and family welcome from our comfortable argriturismo and trying lots of traditional Italian food.
