Journey through the plains and ancient hamlets of northern Italy on the "Via Francigena: Ivrea to Pavia" walking tour. Over eight days, this self-guided package leads travelers from Ivrea, across Piedmont’s rice fields—transformed into shimmering "chequered seas" in spring—to the vibrant university town of Pavia. day 1Arrive Ivrea
On arrival in Ivrea, make your way to your first hotel. Ivrea is located in Piedmont and straddles the Dora Baltea river. The old town centre will delight you with its castle and the tall tower of Santo Stefano. Be sure to take a walk through the open-air museum of modern architecture. We also recommend trying the local Novecento cake, a chocolate cake whose recipe is closely guarded by the town's pastrymakers.

Trip 1: Ivrea to Pavia Enjoyable hike, but after 3/5 days of flat rice fields, the scenery was a little monotonous. Hikers should be warned about the lack of hills and changing scenery. Hike 2: From Bologna to Florence Excellent hike, amazing scenery and challenging terrain with plenty of climbing. My only issue was with the Guibo navigation app. It only showed one trail option, did not operate well in wet conditions, and was actually wrong on more than one occasion. Fortunately, I came across other hikers who had better apps that showed all trail options and roads.
