Itinerary

Discover the dramatic beauty and vertical thrills of Italy’s Dolomites on the "Via Ferrata Guided Hike and Climb" tour. Over seven days, this guided small group adventure takes travelers from Niederdorf to Punta Fiammes, traversing Tyrol and iconic mountain landscapes. The route follows historic Via Ferrata ‘iron ways’—originally built for WWI soldiers—now offering accessible climbing and hiking for those with a sense of adventure and good fitness. Days are filled with exhilarating ascents, panoramic vistas, and the camaraderie of mountain hotels serving local specialties. The unique selling point: the rare opportunity to safely experience the Dolomites’ awe-inspiring pinnacles and WWI history, even for those without previous climbing experience. This tour package is ideal for experienced travelers ready to embrace adventure and revel in Italy’s alpine splendor.

day 1 - Arrive Toblach in the Hochpuster Valley and meet guide

On arrival in the Hochpuster Valley you can be picked up from Toblach/Dobbiaco train station and transferred to the hotel, or you can make your own way to the hotel.

The hotel is your base for the next 6 nights. At 7.00 pm, you will meet your guide and the rest of the group for a trip briefing. Later there will be a group dinner where you will have the chance to discuss the adventure ahead.

Meals:Dinner

day 2 - Ascend path on the Paternkofel (2744m) then descend through the old war-tunnels to the Three Peaks Hut (4-5hrs)

This morning we transfer to the foot of the first Via Ferrata where the climbing equipment will be distributed. We start with an easy but very interesting climbing path on the Paternkofel (Paterno, 2744m). Some sections of the Via Ferrata verge on the vertical today, however the climb is not long and the views at the summit are well worth the effort. The iconic Tre Cime (Three Peaks), whose walls have inspired climbers for generations, are always in view. Later we descend through the old war tunnels to the Three Peaks Hut before returning to the hotel.

Ascent: 300 to 800m/984 to 2624ft

Meals:Breakfast and Dinner

day 3 - Piz da Peres via Ferrata (2508m) (5hrs)

Until the via ferrata was built in 2022, the Piz da Peres was only known to mountain hikers. Only since the iron path was built has this mountain been on the radar of via ferrata climbers. Not only the three interesting climbing sections (with a difficulty rating C/D) including a spectacular rope bridge make this via ferrata so special, but rather the beautiful landscape that surrounds this northern Dolomite peak. On the ascent, you can see from the Sella over the Marmolada to the Tofana in the west. Once you reach the summit, you can admire the Three Peaks to the south-east. A classic Dolomite iron path of modern design on the edge of the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park.

Ascent: 186m/282ft

Meals:Breakfast and Dinner

day 4 - Via ferrata degli Alpini - via ferrata Col de Bois (3-4hrs)

This classic via Ferrata in Cortina is a must! After the approach where you reach the cables to clip onto, prepare for a challenge, climbing vertically for approx. 100m. The hike offers exciting climbing sections and stunning views of the Dolomites as well as many remnants of WWI.

Ascent: 500m/1640ft

Meals:Breakfast and Dinner

day 5 - Valparola Pass, Via Ferrata Sottotenente Fusetti and Hexenstein climb (2477m) (4hrs)

This morning after breakfast, we drive to the Valparola Pass. The approach to Via Ferrata Sottotenente Fusetti offers views of the peak of Marmolada, Queen of the Dolomites and leads through historic tunnels from WWl. This via ferrata is very interesting both from a scenic and sporting point of view, but above all from a historical and military point of view, as it follows in the footsteps of a hero of the First World War: It was opened up by two Alpine units in search of the remains of Lieutenant Mario Fusetti, the hero of the Hexenstein who was posthumously awarded the Italian Gold Medal of Military Valor.

Ascent: 350m/1150ft

Meals:Breakfast and Dinner

day 6 - Arzalpenturm via ferrata (2371m) (6hrs)

First we will climb the the challenging via Ferrata to Arzalppentrum. The entrance is in a small scree gully where the steel cable begins. The path starts off challenging and then follows a steep rock pillar with fairly even difficulty. After the first part, the path continues in easier terrain until, after a traverse and a steep step we reach the ridge of the Arzalpenturm. The front ran over the Arzalpenkopf during WWI, with bunkers and positions from the past are still visible in the summit area and we may be able to explore an old war tunnel on our descent.

Ascent 840m/2760ft

I absolutely loved each day of the via Ferrara trip. It was challenging, with each day incorporating a more difficult via ferrata section. But our guide Steffi was always there to help, support and encourage so I never felt unsafe or too out of my depth. I particularly valued Steffi’s patience in taking heaps of photos for the group. It was a trip that I’ll talk about and remember for a very long time, and which I’m hopefully come back and do again. PS: the accommodation was great and the views unforgettable.

The most epic adventure ever for us wanna be rock climbers! Our group ranged in age from 33 to 62. The Dolomites are spectacular, and clinging to the side of the mountains on the via ferrata in these mountains is a surreal experience. We loved the history in this region with the WW1 relics, the tunnels, barracks, and caves that we traveled through. The first day we were a bit in shock at what we had signed up for, but every day got better even as the via ferratas became slightly more difficult. Every vista was amazing. Our trip leader Hannes was patient, kind, knowledgable, had great humor, explained a lot of things, and seemed to know the trails intimately as he was always stayed at the tough spots (the scant D sections) to help us over them. The trip leaders confer every night as to the plan for the next day based on the weather conditions and the abilities of the groups. Hannes did escalate our trail difficulty to C++ (C is difficult, D is very difficult) for the last 2 climbs/hikes, but we managed to complete them and that is quite a feeling of accomplishment. We enjoyed our fellow hikers tremendously (group of 5 with Hannes), and the six of us (including Hannes) posted over 1000 pictures to the whatsapp chat! We were so fortunate to have almost perfect weather. The base hotel Kirchenwirt, near Dobbiaco/Toblach, is a delight . It is family owned and run, and provides half board as a large breakfast buffet from which we also took some light provisions for lunch, and multicourse dinners. You will not leave hungry. The servers were kind and funny. The food is Tyrolean so more Austrian than Italian. They provide transport to and from the train station, and have an indoor pool, sauna, steam room (much appreciated the last few days after the hikes) . Our room was in the newer section and it was roomy with a nice large bathroom. And a bonus resident friendly Bernese Mountain dog Sisi (maybe Cece?), only 8 months old but already large. Compared to the usual mountain huts with sparse amenities when hiking, this hotel felt quite luxurious. Hannes drove us to the hiking locations each day, 30-60 minutes away. This is reimbursed to him at a nominal cost of 30 euros pp for the week if you choose to use the guide transport. Those mountain roads are no joke to drive on so even those who had cars chose the guide transport. I saw in a previous review that someone recommended bringing your own harness. The harnesses and via ferrata carabiners that the outfitter provided were the latest safety configuration, probably purchased this year or last. So no need to bring your own if you book with Utracks since the package includes the equipment. The guides and trails also provided us a fun optional surprise or two along the way to add to the adventure. Thank you Hannes and Martin! You should have some reasonable upper body strength and grip to do well on the via ferratas if you are not a climber. We had hiked Half Dome in Yosemite, and Angel's Landing in Zion, and these via ferratas make those seem like child's play. You should also be reasonable sure footed since there is also at least 2-3 hours of hiking there and back in addition to the climbing , sometime on rocky terrain with scree. Highly recommend!

Smooth, Scenic, and Superbly Organized I joined a 6-Day Marangu Route hike with Kilisa Tours, and the whole experience was seamless. The accommodations in the mountain huts were cozy, and the support staff made sure we were always comfortable. Our guide shared fascinating stories about the mountain s history and wildlife. Everything ran perfectly on schedule, and the company s attention to detail was impressive. I ve done many treks before, but Kilisa Tours stands out for their genuine care and world-class service. Couldn t have asked for more!
