day 1 - Arrive in Kathmandu

After arriving at the airport in Kathmandu, meet/greet by our representatives then transfer to the hotel and briefing about the next day’s travel plan.

Stroll around Kathmandu in free time or stay at the hotel.

day 2 - Kathmandu Sightseeing and Trek Preparation

After breakfast, Kathmandu sightseeing begins in the morning at historical, cultural and religious UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

We first visit Kathmandu Durbar (Palace) Square, one of the heritage sites where many historical & cultural monuments are located. Later on, drive towards Pashupatinath Temple, sacred Hindu Temple of Lord Shiva in the banks of Holy Bagmati River.

After lunch, we visit the Buddhist pilgrimage Swoyambhunath (famous by the name of Monkey temple among tourists). Likewise, Boudhanath Shrine will be covered in the evening.

Afterwards, return back to hotel.

day 3 - Kathmandu to Lukla (flight- 40 min) to Phakding (2652m)

Early in the morning after breakfast, transfer to the domestic airport to catch the early morning flight to Lukla (2800m), the gateway to the Everest. It is a scenic flight of over 40 minutes passing over the mountains and landing at Tenzing-Hillary Airport in Lukla.

Upon reaching Lukla, rest of the trekking crew will be awaiting then start the first league of trek towards Phakding.

day 4 - Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3440m)

The trek begins after breakfast towards Namche Bazaar which includes few ascending and descending with numerous crossings over the Dudh Koshi River. En-route spectacular view of Mt. Thamserku (6608m) can be seen from Benkar Village. After crossing few bridges comes the entrance to the Sagarmatha National Park at Monjo. Trekking permits are checked by the park authorities here.

The trail then descends and after a steady walks comes Jorsale then further walking comes Hillary Suspension Bridge. Namche Bazaar can be reached upon climbing uphill enjoying views of Kwangde peak along with it’s neighbors like Kusum Kangaru, Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Tawache and other mountains.

A short halt at Chautra for a scenic view to take photographs.

Finally Namche Bazaar is reached, the main gateway to the Khumbu region.

day 5 - Acclimatization Namche Bazaar, Everest View hotel hike

Today is a rest day at Namche for better acclimatizing in the high altitude. A few hours of walk is recommend by health experts so a short hike to the Everest View Hotel is a good option- from the hotel premises panoramic view of the Everest region can be seen.

Other option is to explore Namche Bazaar, the central hub for trekkers, climbers and also a trading junction for the locals and Tibetan traders alike. Every Fridays and Saturdays there is a special market drawing attention of the tourist.

Namche has many restaurants, pubs, hotels, bakery, cafes. A few hours of walk in Namche itself is helpful for acclimatizing. Near the headquarter of Sagarmatha National Park is the Tourist Visitor Center which houses collections of things related to the first Everest ascenders, Sherpa culture & traditions and more about lifestyle of the people living up in the Himalayas. Namche Bazaar is simply a great place to hang around.

day 6 - Namche Bazaar to Tengboche (3860m)

The trek today is toward beautiful Tengboche en-route enjoying spectacular views of Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Amadablam and close-up view of Mt. Thamserku. Also spot some wildlife like musk deer, Himalayan Thar, multi-colored pheasants. The trail via Kayangjuma eventually reaches Sansa, which is the major trail junction to Gokyo valley and Everest Base Camp. Then it crosses a beautiful pine forest and prayer flags festooned bridge over the Dudh Koshi River to reach Phunki Tenga.

Tengboche is reached after climbing through the forest for a few more hours. Tengboche has closer views of Everest, Amadablam & Nuptse. It also has the biggest Buddhist monastery in the Khumbu region ‘Tengboche Monastery’.

day 7 - Tengboche to Dingboche (4410m)

Witness the early morning views of the snow-capped mountains from Tengboche then gear up for Dingboche also known as 'summer valley'.

The route first chooses the upper trail passing through several Chortens, Mani Walls & small villages then crosses the Imja Khola and goes through the village of Pangboche (3900m). Spectacular views of Amadablam and other peaks keep the trek energetic.

Dingboche is reached after entering the Imja Valley and descending to Lobuche River and some continuous climb. In Dingboche, green fields protected by stone walls can be seen in order to save these pastures from cold, wind and animals.

day 8 - Dingboche to Chhukung (4750m)

A pleasant walk following the trail via Imja river valley with great mountains view en-route. The walk is relaxing - just 3-4 hours. The towering peak of Lhotse can be observed towards left and Amadablam to the right.

Walking further ‘Bibre-yak herdman place’ is reached. Taking further steps Island Peak, one of the most popular trekking peaks, can be noticed. Chhukung can be reached upon crossing some icy streams en-route for 30 minutes. From Chhukung, witness scenic views of glaciers and massive mountains all around.

In Chhukung, take a rest or hike to rocky knoll of Chhukung-Ri commanding stunning views of Lhotse, Island peak, Amadablam, Makalu and others.

day 9 - Acclimatization, Explore Chhukung and its vicinity

Today is for acclimatizing and experts strongly recommend acclimatizing at Chhukung before heading for Kongma-La Pass. The day is spent on exploring around Chhukung.

The views from Chhukung and above on the moraines towards the Island peak is simply breathtaking. Take the opportunity to climb Chhukung-Ri or climb the base camp of Island Peak.

day 10 - Chhukung to Kongma La (5535m) to Lobuche (4940m)

This day is ascending the highest pass of the expedition, Kongma-La Pass. Start the trek early in the morning after breakfast and make sure plenty of water, snacks & packed lunch are taken as no tea shops are on this route.

The trail is absolutely exquisite where you can enjoy the natural beauty of the Khumbu region. The trail offers two options whether you wish to climb over the hill northwest of Chhukung over the moraine of the Nuptse Glacier or walk back to Bibre and follow a high trail above the Niyang Khola.

Discover the beauty of Island peak viler and ridge of Amohu Lapcha after few hours of walking. The trail then ascends through Niyang Khola Valley then turns west and after continuous walking through a stony trail reaches a wide basin filled with small frozen lakes.

The trail then further leads us to Kongma La. The marks of the pass: cairn wrapped in prayer flags can be seen from the top of Kongma-La. Khumbu glacier is yet another attraction of this region.

The trek continues turning north through Khumbu Glacier towards Lobuche.

day 11 - Lobuche to Gorekshep(5170m)-Everest Base Camp (5364m)

Morning begins with breakfast then trek to Gorekshep via the moraine of Khumbu Glacier and it’s a long walk today enjoying the magnificent panorama of the Khumbu region.

The trial passes through the pyramid sign post, and trekking further comes the view of the crest of the north ridge of Mt. Everest including Pumori, Mahalungur, Lingtem, Khumbutse, Nuptse and other peaks. Climbing further reaches Thangma Riju offering 360 degree panoramic view of snowy mountains. And climbing through the stream of Changri Glacier, the first sight of Kalapather can be observed.

Reaching Gorekshep, which is surrounded by snowy peaks including Mt. Everest continue straight ahead through Indian Army Mountaineers’ memorials towards the Everest Base Camp. Everest Base Camp commands views of Nuptse, Khumbutse, Pumori but Mt. Everest might stay hidden.

day 12 - Gorekshep to Kalapather (5545m) to Lobuche (4940m)

Today is yet another exciting and adventurous hike to Kalapather. In the early morning, catch the spectacular view of Mt. Everest and other peaks from Kalapather. Gear up with some fine warm cloths as the cold wind is quite common in this region.

En-route to Kalapather, witness scenic mountain views like Lingtren, Changtse, Khumbutse etc from a distance. Mt. Everest slowly reveals itself as the trek progresses. Kalapather can be reached after several hours. The natural surroundings of mountains and the Himalayan ranges is the best from this point.

Afterwards, trek back to Gorekshep and finally climb down to Lobuche.

day 13 - Lobuche to Dzongla (4830m)

The trek today is short and more relaxed towards Dzongla. Leaving Lobuche behind, the trail crosses a stream and ridges then leads to Dzongla. Good views of Amadablam and Thamserku can be noticed en-route and also Mt. Taboche peering at a distance.

The village of Pheriche looms in a distance offering a great view. Then the route passes through Chola Lake below Cholatse and later climbs up a spur then further descends steeply to a wide basin. Dzongla can be reached upon a steady walk from the basin and crossing a shaky bridge.

day 14 - Dzongla to Cho La (5368m) to Thangnak (4680m) - Gokyo

Another high passes of Everest, Chola Pass, is crossed today. Set-off early in the morning after breakfast and today is probably the toughest day of the expedition.

First the trail descends to a basin across the icy streams via which the basin top can be reached. The trail then becomes rough then ascends revealing the beauty of Chola Lake.

As the route gains height, witness soaring Amadablam on the south and Cholatse towards west. At this point we need to be very careful while scrambling through the rocky trail. The rocks can be glazed by ice so being alert is very important. Climbing Cho La is really a tough job but worth the climb.

The Chola summit has prayer flags flapping in the strong wind with breath-taking views. The rocky trail leading down to Thangnak can easily made out from the pass but cautiousness is required as rocks are glazed by ice.

Thangnak can be reached after few hours of walk. Leaving Thangnak, a short walk will lead to Ngozumpa Glacier (the longest glacier in Nepal) and walking further will reach the village of Gokyo.

day 15 - Acclimatization- Trek to Gokyo Ri (5357m)

Yet another day for acclimatization in Gokyo. Explore Gokyo and climb Gokyo-Ri, the best viewpoint in the Everest region.

The hike to Gokyo-Ri takes a couple of hours and the summit commands panoramic spectacular views of Mt. Cho-Oyu, Lhotse, Makalu, Everest plus Cho-Oyu Base Camp and the biggest glacier in the world ‘Ngazumpa Glacier’.

Afterwards, descend down and return to Gokyo.

day 16 - Gokyo to Renjo La (5360m) to Marlung (4210m)

Gear up today for Rinjo-La & Marlung, and the trek begins early in the morning leaving the main trail and taking trail to Renjo-La via Dudh Pokhari. Rinjo-La can be reached after a couple hours of walk from where alluring Himalayan views can be enjoyed. These include Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Cholatse etc shining in the first rays of the sun.

Enjoy this spectacular panorama then descend down the icy trail to reach Lumde. En-route is Relama Tsho & Renjo Lake. Further walking from Lumde to reach Marlung situated on the east bank of Bhote Khosi River.

day 17 - Marlung to Namche Bazaar

Closer to the trek end, we set-off back to Namche today. The trail first crosses the Bhote Khosi River and descends down to Taranga to reach the valley of Langmuche Khola.

After few hours of walk comes Thame. The ancient Gompa (Monastery) is yet another must see monument of Thame. The Gompa has three big images of Avalokiteswara, Guru Rimpoche and Buddha Shakyamuni. The famous Mani Rimdu festival is held in this Gompa in May which features colorful mask dances with other traditions.

Afterwards, Samde is reached upon climbing down and crossing a bridge. Further ascend down to Thame Village to pay a visit to Khari Gompa, home to Buddhist monks & nuns.

The trek continues passing check-post and hydro-electricity power station to reach a small village of Phurte. Lawudo Monastery is situated at Phurte popular among westerners for Buddhist study and meditation.

Namche Bazaar is eventually reached upon passing through some gompas, mani stones, chortens.

day 18 - Namche Bazaar to Lukla

Wrapping up the expedition today and leaving Namche Bazaar towards Lukla. The trail descends down the rocky path crossing suspension bridge over Dudh Khosi River. It then becomes smoother and easy - passing through beautiful forest filled with Rhododendron, pine trees and other vegetations.

Ultimately arrive at Lukla and have a relaxing time with the trek crew and other group members.

day 19 - Lukla to Kathmandu (flight)

We fly to Kathmandu this morning with a scenic view of the mountains. The 40 minutes flight will also give us a bird’s eye view of glorious Kathmandu city by the time it prepares to land.

Upon arrival in Kathmandu, our representative will meet you and transfer to the hotel.

PM: Free/At leisure.

day 20 - Transfer to the Airport for your onward destination

Last day of the trip and transfer from hotel to the international airport in Kathmandu by our representatives. It is advisable to arrive at the airport three hours before your flight schedule.

The Manaslu trek is one of Nepal's best treks. If you have 17 days available for trekking in Nepal, we highly recommend this trek. It is challenging, especially the day of crossing the Larke pass at 5,135 m but if you are in reasonable shape, determined, and able to walk 6 hours a day, you can do this trek. Manaslu is the eighth highest peak in the world, bordering the Gorkha and Manang districts in Nepal. It is just 64km East of the previously popular Annapurna treks. Literally, Manaslu is derived from Sanskrit with manasa means “Mountain of the spirit". The Manaslu region encompasses everything from sub tropical foothills to the arid Trans-Himalaya high pastures bordering Tibet. The Manaslu trek opened only in 1991. Its popularity increased significantly when teahouses become available around 2009. The Manaslu region has no roads or alike and the trekking trails are excellent. This combined with a high variation in altitude starting from around 700 m and getting up to 5,135 m is the reason why the Manaslu trek today is preferred over the Annapurna trek. After a 6 hours bus ride from Kathmandu, the trek begins Arughat. En-route the trek, you will not only see spectacular mountain scenery but can also visit several monasteries. If you have 19 days available, you will not regret choosing this trek. If you are in doubt as to physical fitness we highly recommend adding a porter. 1 porter can carry up to 30 kgs and can thus be shared between 2 people.
