Breakfast at Hotel and transfer to Kathmandu domestic airport depends on Kathmandu – Lukla flight schedule. It is approx. 25 minutes flight over the hilly region. Lukla, gateway of homeland of sherpas, Khumbu, Mt. Everest. Trekking journey starts from Lukla. Trekking starts from Lukla and follow the trail south away from Everest through forest and waterfalls to Paiya 2730 m.
The trail from Paiya to Pangkoma follows the route south over the river and traverse around the side of the hill and descends to Khare Khola, turns east and gradually uphill to reach the village of Pangkongma 2850 m. Explore through the village to see how the local live in these Himalayan foot hills and visit newly rebuilt Monastery.
The trail ascends towards Pangkongma La after leaving Pangkongma village and enters to the Hinku valley. The Hinku valley is filled with lush forests and a few Kharka pasture settlements. Snowy peaks top the opposite side of the valley and it is not long to get view of Mera Peak shining in the distance. Then the trail descends into the valley and cross suspension bridge beside the most dramatic waterfall. Once again crossing river ascends through deep forest to Narjingdingma, a settlement of bamboo huts.
The journey continues through forest and ascends to Surke La with views of the wild and remote Hongu valley opens up as the trail follows the ridge north. The first section of the ridge is called “Raspberry Ridge”. After ridge, the trail continues to Chumbu Kharka.
The trail from Changbu Kharka continues ascending up to ridge over cragged rocks and heather until reaches highest altitude so far of 4330 m. From here it descends to the mysterious lakes of Panch Pokhari. There are five lakes and they are considered a place of pilgrimage for Buddhists, who line the edges of the lakes with Chortens, and Hindus, who leave tridents, the symbol of Shiva the mountain-born god of destruction and re-birth. After leaving the lakes the trail descends a short distance to Mosum Kharka.
Another excellent day, first contouring the heathery slopes, now firmly on the Hinku side of the ridge. Dwarf juniper shrub turns gradually to trees again, before the trail descends steeply to the phenomenal cascading junction of two mountain torrents, crashing down through tall pine forests all around. These less-spoilt forests become even more majestic, the trail rejoin the main river, crossing it to continue up the west bank and reach Khote 3,580 m. The final crest of the Mera ridge including the summit is clearly visible up at the end of the valley ahead.
The wonderful journey to Tangnag, first hour is a beautiful walk with giant mountains in all directions. Then stay on the left hand side of the river, watching out for rock fall on our left. The trail and terrain is gradual mixed rock and pastures where yaks graze in the summer months. The valley swings eastward into a new array of peaks and the route up toward the Mera glacier comes into view. Tangnag sit of beautiful mountain.
The journey from Thagnag passes alongside the Dig glacier is easy and relaxed. This is an excellent valley opening out views to the north of the Hinku Nup glacier and the line of peaks beyond. Behind it is the dramatic spire of the less than romantically named ‘Peak 35’, which has yet to be climbed. Only the last section up to base camp at Khare (4,940m) is steep and reminds that it is gaining altitude. It is a short climb and can be reached there in good time.
This is an optional hiking is more valuable acclimatization and pick up some stunning views as well. Following the lateral moraine of the Hinku Nup glacier into an arena of peaks and glacial lakes, the journey turns to ascend a grassy ridge that rises back to the south. The top of ridge surrounds by a stunning panorama of peaks including Mera itself and the whole of Hinku Himal to the north right round to the south face of Ama Dablam. Return to Khare in the evening.
The journey proceeds from Khare to high camp, ascends up to the Mera La 5415 m. passing up to the Mera Glacier. At first it is easy but the trek up to the glacier is steep in sections and should be taken care pace yourself and make sure stepping correctly. There is a chance of rock fall so wearing helmets, crampons is needed. The walk across the glacier is outstanding, with views and memories lifetime: south-west face of Chamlang, Makalu, Kangchenjunga, Baruntse, Ama Dablam, Nuptse, Lhotse Shar, Everest, Ngozumpa glacier. High camp is hidden behind a rocky section. The camp site is small and has some drop offs on the right as you enter the camp.
The climb to the summit of Mera Peak starts gradually, and much depends on weather conditions. Once left high camp usually at early morning it should take 5/6 hours to reach the summit. Getting into a rest step and taking time will be critical to conserving energy for the decent. The central summit appears above the wide glacier, flanked by 2 ridges. The trail should follow the snowfields avoiding the crevasses. This steep section can take 2 hours and is slow going. The route swings to the east of the left hand ridge before turning back towards the main summit ridge of Mera. Mera has 3 summits, our objective is the highest. This short steep snow slope is easily climbed, but the last 30m/98ft requires a lot of effort, Jumaring on a short steep ice section and you arrive on the summit. After reaching the summit and enjoying amazing views over the Himalayas, have a short abseil before the long descent back to High camp and descend back down to Khare at 5100 m.
This is an extra day as reserve day for in case. Either for base camp if some cases or you spend this day in Lukla. Overnight at camping.
The trail follows the same journey back to Kothe – Thagnag and Thagnag to Khar/ Mera Peak base camp.
than wind through the forests down below. This makes for a quicker return with some fantastic views back of Mera herself from a completely different angle. Chetera (4,300 m) is a small pasture by an enormous free-standing rock.
The trail goes over a series of rises and high plateau before trail finally reaches the craggy Zatrawa La 4580 m, for view back on the Hinku wilderness for the last time and the south face of the peak that has been summited. A gradual descent traverses toward the rocky outcrop of the Zatrwa. Switching over to the north behind this it descends now steeply from the Kalo Himal, the ‘black mountains’, into the rocky slopes and cascading streams of the Sherpa populated Dudh Kosi valley. The high crags give way to forest, then to farmland as approaches the tourist bustle of Lukla 2,850 m, our night stop, still high above the river. The village of our outward trek now feels like a metropolis.
