Itinerary
Cross-country skiing in the Italian Dolomites is more than a sport—it’s a way to soak up the breathtaking alpine scenery at your own pace. The 'Italian Dolomites Cross-country Skiing' trip starts and ends in Dobbiaco, unfolding over 8 days of guided exploration on meticulously prepared trails. With routes suitable for all levels, from beginners to advanced skiers, this tour invites experienced travelers to glide beneath towering limestone peaks and through tranquil forests. Unlike downhill skiing, cross-country focuses on aerobic endurance, making it a rewarding challenge for those who enjoy an active getaway. Your base is a family-run hotel known for its warmth and hospitality—an ideal retreat after invigorating days on the trails. day 1 - Start Dobbiaco
Our trip starts in the lovely village of Dobbiaco, in South Tyrol, just over the border from Austria. Settle in and take advantage of the hotel facilities, before we enjoy dinner together – a great chance to get to know each other a little more.
day 2 - 4 - Three days cross-country skiing
Each day our leader chooses routes according to the grade and snow conditions. Many kilometres of valley tracks offer wonderful options for beginners and improvers. Some begin from Dobbiaco itself; for others, we make use of the local transport network. For more advanced skiers, there are tougher routes, such as the track that leads south to Cortina d'Ampezzo, a memorable trail among spectacular mountains, passing under the triple rock buttresses of the imposing Tre Cime di Lavaredo.
In a typical week, the group will cover more and more ground, taking in everything this beautiful region has to offer. There are opportunities for coffee breaks and, of course, photo stops as we spend our week framed by the towering limestone peaks synonymous with the region.
day 5 - Free day
Today is usually free to relax at the hotel, stroll around town or choose an optional activity such as self-guided snowshoeing or perhaps a visit to one of the local museums.
day 6 - 7 - We continue our explorations on skis
The Sexten and Prags valleys offer a choice of undulating routes in typical Dolomites scenery and the high Plaetzwiese Plateau also offers superb routes at about 6,560ft (2,000m). By this stage of the week, even beginner groups will have mastered the basics, such as how to turn and stop, ascend and descend safely. More advanced groups will have already covered some of the fantastic secluded routes and the leader will ensure the final few days are used for the simple pleasure of gliding through such a beautiful natural environment.
day 8 - End Dobbiaco
Our trip ends after breakfast. We say goodbye to the Tschurtschenthaler family and begin our return journey home.

An unforgettable winter adventure
The Dolomites are a beautiful region and this trip is a fun way to explore it by skii. The itinerary struck a perfect balance between physical activity and relaxation. Each day offered scenic ski routes through pristine, snow-covered landscapes—peaceful forests, frozen lakes, and charming alpine villages. Our guide Michele was not only highly skilled and knowledgeable about the terrain but also enthusiastic and encouraging, making the experience enjoyable for skiers of all levels. Whether you were a first-timer or an experienced skier, you felt supported and challenged in all the right ways. The hotel was cozy and we ate delicious meals—exactly what you want after a day on the trails.
Hard work, great fun, good company
The grade 2 holiday was challenging enough for me. The temperature was a bit high for really good conditions but Michele, the Group Leader, made sure we went to the best places. The hotel was very good and the food high quality., as were our lunch stop restaurants. The group had mixed experience but Michele coped well with this.
Two fantastic weeks
My trip lasted two weeks. The first week was grade 4 with Michele. The second was grades 3 and 4 with Michele and Alex.
Another excellent holiday
Uninterrupted sunshine for 7 days helped to make this a week of excellent varied skiing. It was very cold in the mornings and late afternoon. so layers were essential. This was our second stay at this lovely comfortable hotel, with friendly helpful staff, and tasty meals with plenty of choice for all preferences.
Another Great Cross Country Skiing Holiday in the Dolomites
As a repeat visitor to this area of the Dolomites I knew exactly what to expect in terms of the village and hotel. The hotel bathrooms are gradually being refurbished, but not mine. But the food is good and the Wellness Centre in the basement is excellent. The owner and her staff are very welcoming and helpful. Much depends on the skiing conditions of any particular visit. This year there had been last minute excellent snow which was tragically washed away by rain shortly before we arrived. However, on the whole, the local community had done excellent work in maintaining the loipen to a high standard. No one could have predicted the -13 degree temperatures but our guide worked hard to ensure we were adequately wrapped up and kept us moving so that we did not get too cold before we could find a sun filled valley to warm us up. The participants were broadly of a similar standard and so the skiing day worked well with options to catch an early bus if anyone preferred this. Alex's knowledge of the loipen meant that we had a really good ski on each of the guided days of the holiday.
