Nobody could understand the tour director
Architectural beauty of buildings in Sicily was far better than we were prepared for. To be honest we would not have gone to some of the good venues /places chosen. It appears that the tour director on our tour may have been a fill in. He was very hard to understand and I learnt that from other fellow passengers. He is good as a person but professionally he lacks speaking English and preciseness. In comparison to Kate from our previous Trafalgar Imperial Europe tour, he lacks finesse. I found the driver to be more helpful getting us by at the restaurants/ cafe when we stopped. It is for this reason I had to drop the score.
Our tour director, ***************, was a well-intentioned, hard-working, person who completely lacks the English language and organizational skills to be in this job. He is absolutely unable to communicate logistical information, which is the mandatory minimum skill for a tour director. He routinely gives: 2-3 different times to meet in the space of 5 minutes; incomprehensible and incorrect directions for finding, eg, a restaurant or a castle; NEVER counts the guests, relying on the guests themselves to tell him who is missing; and never adheres to the timeline. He is also unable to clearly communicate historical, geographical, or cultural information, so we learn next to nothing about the places we visit. For example, our Savoca specialist informed us about why Modica is a historically significant location. He was the worst guide we have ever had in 40 years of travel. He does not come anywhere close to the standard we have known and expect from Trafalgar. On the Taomina lunch optional experience, the womens’ toilet, which was a single, did not flush and the door did not lock. We all had to use it anyway. The single man’s toilet also did not lock. The food was poor. On the farewell dinner, again the women’s room did not lock. On the aromatic farm experience, the womens’ room again did not lock and the food was extremely meager for the exhorbitant price - just a few appetizers and pasta. The Sveracavallo dinner was excellent. The local specialists were all excellent. The bus driver was excellent. The hotels ran the gamut from excellent (Grand Hotel Syracuse) to average (Garibaldi), to fly-filled (Poggio del Sole) to dangerously located (Katane Palace - we had to walk 5 blocks in the dark, run-down area from the coach to the hotel). We also had several essentially disabled people on the tour who had to be taxied up hills and stairs. We’ve never been on a walking tour that allowed this. We intend to seek compensation from Trafalgar.
Trafalgar did not meet its commitment to provide a tour director capable of providing information in a clear, concise manner. For example, he was unclear about issues of logistics, including timing and scheduling. Any information he sought to provide on places we were visiting was incomprehensible due to rambling, run on sentences covering multiple topics in a disorganized fashion. This was complicated by his accent. Trafalgar failed us.
The itinerary was good but the hotels were very far from the center and we had no access to any entertainment other than the options offered by Trafalgar at an extra cost which for the quality of what they were offering was really high.
