Introducing Albania
Closed off from the world until the early 1990s, Albania remains one of Europe’s most enigmatic destinations. Head into the mountains on a hiking expedition to Gijrokaster‘s – a Unesco World Heritage site dating from the seventeenth century. Alternatively, take a road trip to the country’s extraordinary – yet often deserted – beaches, or swap the Mediterranean for the hot springs at Benja.

When to go to Albania
Anyone looking forward to an Albanian vacation should be aware of the best time to visit the country. Generally speaking, the period stretching from the start of spring in April until the end of summer in October is considered to be the peak season when it comes to traveling to Albania. These months are ideal for capturing everything from remote mountains to Mediterranean beaches. In July and August, temperatures can soar over 30°C in coastal areas and the beaches are at their most crowded. The country receives some rain and snow during the fall and winter months of November through March, making this a good time for skiing and snowboarding. Learn more.
How long to stay in Albania
Although Albania is a small country, we suggest ruling out any itinerary under four days if you wish to make the most of your vacation. With four to five days, you have enough time to take in the sights and sounds of the capital, Tirana, discover the ancient monasteries of Lake Ohrid, and gaze at the remains of a Roman amphitheatre in Durres. If you have between seven to ten days with you, then you can drive through the Llogara Pass and cover the highlights of Berat before relaxing in the Albanian Riviera. With two weeks to spare, there is no destination in Albania out of bounds for you. Learn more.
Must-visit destinations in Albania
Most tourists will start off in Tirana, which is worth a day of sightseeing and exploring the excellent food option. Vlores’s old town should also be on the list of any tailormade jaunt to Albania. Butrint, yet another bucket-list destination, is home to numerous Roman remains, while the Unesco-listed Podragec combines a commanding location near Lake Ohrid with proximity to important sites, including the Illyrian Tombs of Selca e Poshtme in the ancient city of Pelion. Hikers will adore the endless footpaths that cut through the Albania Alps. Meanwhile, avid beachgoers should make sure that they include a couple of days in the resort town of Ksamil in their itinerary.
