Itinerary

Everest Gokyo Trek gives you an unrivaled view of Mount Everest from Gokyo Ri. On this guided trek, you'll not only walk alongside the Himalayas and the Dudh Koshi river, you'll also reach the turquoise glacial lakes of Gokyo and Ngozumpa Glacier, the largest in Nepal's Himalayas.

You're trek starts after a short flight to Lukla, from where you'll make your way through Shrepa villages, Buddhist monasteries and rhododendron forests to the settlement of Gokyo. The hamlet is alongside the tranquil Gokyo Cho, or Dudh Pokhari, and on the base of Gokyo Ri (5,357 m).

Trek to the top of Gokyo Ri for an expansive view of Cho Oyu, Mount Everest, Lhotse and Makalu, among others. You'll also see five glacial lakes of the region: Longpongo, Taboche Tsho, Gokyo Cho, Thonak Tsho and Ngozuma Tsho.

One of the highlights of the trek is also the spectacular view from ice point between Cho Oyu and Gyachung.

Everest Gokyo trek is best done from March to May and September to December. However, you can book trek across the year, depending on your travel schedule.

day 1 - Fly to Lukla & trek to Phakding

From Kathmandu, take a 30-minute flight to Lukla (2,804 m). Have at a guest house near Lukla Airport, with the runway and the majestic mountains as your backdrop.

After the breakfast, trek alongside the Dudh Koshi river for about three hours to Phakding (2,610 m). We'll take rest for the remaining day.

day 2 - Trek to Namche Bazaar

Today is a relatively longer day of walking. You'll trek for about five hours and climb 850 metres from Phakding to reach Namche Bazaar (3,441 m). Namche is a big town in the Everest region and is a hub for tourists. It has a vibrant market and allows for any last-minute purchase or restocking. As the first long walk of the trek, you might feel tired on the day.

day 3 - Namche Bazaar acclimatisation day

Today we have the whole day for acclimatisation and rest. We'll climb up to Everest View Hotel to see a panoramic view of the Everest range which includes Mount Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku and Kusum Kangaru.

The climb takes about two hours, and we'll take an hour's tea break at the hotel which enjoying the scenery before trekking back to Namche Bazar.

day 4 - Trek to Phorste Thanga

We'll begin ascending today as we keep the majestic Himalayas on our side and encounter wildlife such as musk deer, Himalayan Thars and pheasants along the way.

After reaching Khumjung, we'll descend and cross the Dudh Koshi river and ascend again through rhododendron forests to reach Phortse Thanga (3,680 m).

day 5 - Trek to Machherma

Today, ascend steeply to Dole passing through birch and rhododendron forests. On the way, we'll see stunning views of Cho Oyu, Kantega and Thamserku. The route moves alongside the Dudh Koshi and some small settlements. After about five hours of walking, we'll spend the night at Machhermo (4,470 m).

day 6 - Trek to Gokyo

Make your way through ridge chortens (stupa) which are great viewpoints with the valley below and mountains: Mt. Kangtega, Thamserku and Cho-Oyu, above. As we approach Gokyo village, we'll cross three lakes: Longpongo, Taboche Tsho and Dudh Pokhari. Gokyo village (4,790 m) stands by the third lake, also called Gokyo Cho, which is also our destination for the day.

day 7 - Trek to Gokyo Ri & back to Gokyo

Spend the day exploring Gokyo and the surrounding lakes as well as hike up to Gokyo Ri (5,l483 m), the mountain on whose base Gokyo village is settled.

From the top, we'll see Ngozumpa glacier, the biggest glacier of Nepal, and a panoramic view of snow-capped mountains like Mt. Everest (8,848 m), Mt. Cho Oyu (8,201 m), Mt. Lhotse (8,516 m), and many more. Lake Thonak Tsho and lake Ngozuma Tsho will also be visible during the trek.

day 8 - Trek to Phorste Thanga

We will descend back to Phortse Thanga on the same route as we came. The trail steeply descends through rhododendron and fir forests. We might see wildlife on our way as we cross a bridge over the Dudh Koshi river. Stay for night at Phortse Thanga (3,680 m) after six hours of trek.

day 9 - Trek to Namche Bazaar via Khumjung village

Today, descend steeply through beautiful rhododendron forests. To reach Khumjung (3,780 m), ascend on a sandy slope to the Dudh Koshi Valley and then descend back down.

Namche Bazaar is a short walk away from Khumjung village if you want to spend time in the bustling town and its numerous restaurants and cafes.

day 10 - Trek to Lukla

You've trekked a lot on your Gokyo trip and seen the highest peak in the work up close, now make your last descend to Lukla for your flight back to Kathmandu.

You'll pass Phakding on your way back. You can enjoy the evening at the restaurants and bars in Lukla reminiscing about your journey to one of the highest regions in the world.

day 11 - Morning flight to Kathmandu

Soak up last glimpses of the Everest range from up close as you prepare to fly back to the capital. Have your breakfast surrounded the same view that greeted you on the first day of your trek.

After half an hour's flight you'll be back in Kathmandu with memories you'll cherish for the rest of your life.
