Chavonnes Battery

Built in 1724, the first in a range of coastal defense to deter sea-borne aggressors and named after the Governor, its stable firing platform with 16 large cannons enabled gunners to bring accurate fire to bear on hostile ships from its perch as watchdog of the bay. The Chavonnes Battery was partially demolished in 1860 its stone reused for the Alfred Basin and the Clock Tower was built as its new sentinel. In 1999, the Chavonnes Battery was re-discovered, excavated and conserved in a spectacular example of architectural ingenuity. The Chavonnes Battery tells about the early History of Cape Town which includes: • A Heritage site / museum, • We host Contemporary International Art exhibitions, • We offer guided tours of the museum, • The official V&A Waterfront Historical Walking Tour, • The exquisite site is suited to presentations and "Old Cape" themed dinners, • The opportunity to fire an original 18th century Muzzle Loaded Cannon. (Under supervision of the Cannon Association of SA) It is the only place that you can touch the sand of the original Cape Town shoreline that has been buried for 300 years, the sand Jan Van Riebeeck walked on and all our guides dress in period costume of a 17th century VOC soldier. The Chavonnes Battery is open 7 days a week from 9 am to 4 pm. The average walk through lasts 30-40 min with ample seating and reading material for longer visits.

Few countries to mention Germany, the UK, Netherlands, USA, Switzerland, Italy, France, Belgium, Canada, etc. I was working previously in the Diamond mining Industry and Fish Companies and also serve in the Military as a Medic. I visited London WTM, ITB in Berlin, Philippines and Turkey a few times and attended convention hosted by the World Federation for Tourist Guides. Aukwatowa Tours will tailor make tours & transfers at extremely competitive rates. Allow us to let you savour the true Africa and experience something that will stay with you forever. You will be the envy of others when you tell them of your experience. We are based in Port Nolloth, and normally start and end our Tours here, but through arrangements you can be picked up at the airport in Upington or Cape Town. We normally structure our tours to include as much as possible, of a variety of things. On the way to the Ai-Ais Richtersveld Transfrontier Park (a World Heritage site) we like to show our visitors some rare plants, landscapes, rock engravings etc. These amazing places are not necessarily inside the Park. On a “normal” trip, we only reach the Park by the end of the first day. The Richtersveld consists of the Sandveld on the coast, which is mostly inaccessible ( restricted mining area), then you have the wetlands at the Orange river mouth, the scenic areas along the Orange river, Conservancy areas at Kuboes, Eksteenfontein and Rooiberg, the National Park, and areas outside these formal conservancy areas. It needs to be mentioned that some of the Areas outside the conservancy and Park, are no less spectacular than the parts inside these areas. Our more popular tours are between 2 and 8 days. Before these trips we establish our client’s personal interests, and put something together that suits them. We start planning a tour with two people, and keep our group sizes to not more than eight people. On our tours, we supply everything, from the vehicle , equipment, putting up camp where necessary, preparing meals, cleaning up, changing flat tyres (if necessary), drinking water and accommodation before and after the Tour (in Port Nolloth). In the National Park, we would not be able to cover much of it, as travelling in the Park is generally slow. It is important to make stops, and to do short hikes, to see and appreciate more of the plants, and landscapes, thus we need to do 3 to 6 days in order to cover all. WE OFFER: Namakwa Flowers and Botanic Safaris Richtersveld World Heritage Site Visits and Cultural Safaris, and meeting with locals. Our trip to Australia with Luxury Gold was an excellent experience, it was a very busy itinerary, but it allowed us to see a lot of what Australia has to offer. The whole schedule was put together exceptionally well, and our Tour Manager was very attentive and looked after us throughout the trip. Our favourite hotel was The Reef Hotel, The Langham was also exceptional. The only part we would change, would be the trip to the Yarra Valley in Melbourne, as the visit to the Chocolate experience was not for us. In hindsight we would rather have spent the day at leisure in Melbourne. Every other aspect of the trip was spot on, we loved it.

Fantastic itinerary covering the major sights, incredible palaces, spectacular forts, and beautiful temples of the ‘Golden Triangle’ Rajasthan. Luxurious beautiful hotels, all diverse in size and style and even one where we arrived and departed by private boat! Upon arrival we were greeted by friendly staff in traditional dress. Some of the hotels performed a traditional scarf ceremony or beautiful flower necklaces with traditional music. A few of the hotels surprised us with rose petals which were sprinkled from high above onto us as we entered! Yes there was the opposite end of the spectrum where in the big cities horns were blowing and scooters were everywhere zigzagging and livestock sometimes laying in the middle of the road. I must say it was all fascinating creating a lot of laughs and part of the experience of India. The itinerary included experiences were great! The places we visited were incredibly beautiful, such diverse architecture, decoration and history. The Taj Mahal sends shivers when you first see it and seems surreal. The sunrise casting a beautiful golden light onto the buildings was sublime. Our Tuk Tuk tour through New Delhi, and our jeep journey through the dunes at sunset with our evening dinner (with entertainment) in the middle of the dunes was fantastic! The mix of the big city, villages, countryside, hilltop fortresses, lakes, forests and sand dunes really gave a great diversity of experiences. We even had monkeys in the trees above us during lunch one day! Our coach was very comfortable and spacious and appreciated the endless bottled water on board. Enjoyed the commentary and care given by our Travelling Concierge who was very helpful with every request. India for me was a country filled with a rainbow of bright color and very lovely and beautiful people who were so polite and friendly with gorgeous smiles! That is one of my big takeaways from this trip. Well done Luxury Gold it was a great holiday and would not hesitate to travel with you again!
