Azores Tour Reviews

Guest reviews from travelers on tours in and around Azores

David | Traveled in September

The holiday was a balanced mix of short(ish) walks and interesting activities and attractions, from wine tasting to whale watching, a botanic garden to a tea factory and from boiling fumaroles to a volcano interpretation centre. Transport arrangements worked perfectly and all four hotels were of a high standard and located in the main centres of activity in each of the islands. All in all an excellent holiday.

Thoroughly enjoyable holiday in the beautiful Azores. We visited 4 contrasting islands, but all were lush and green despite their volcanic nature. I thought that there might be more downtime than I like from the itinerary on the website, but in fact, there were activities every day, as our very organised and hardworking guide Tania, led optional walks for us in free time, and also ensured that everyone had the chance to go whale watching and climb Pico Mountain, if they wished. I would definitely like to return to the Azores and visit some of the other islands.

We were delighted by our tour through four islands of the Azores. Our tour leader was exceptional and the islands are beautiful. While hiking trails are often seldom used roads, the scenery is extraordinary.

Hotel rooms were too small for 2 people and all their gear. Breakfasts were great, especially the coffee. Air con at Hotel in Sao Jorge did not work. The Tour Guide was great. She often surprised us with add ons to the existing itinerary that did not cost us extra. Her energy and patience was appreciated as well as her concern for our safety.

A great way to explore four of these lovely unspoilt islands. Walking with some sightseeing and free time for whale watching, swimming. The leader, Tania, is excellent, passionate about the islands and works tirelessly to give her guests the best possible experience. Walking is described as gentle, they are not long but be prepared for some sections of rough, stony paths and some steepish ascent, descent. The hotels were all good and we enjoyed the abundance of fresh fish and local wines. Overall a great experience.

I had a wonderful experience doing Walking in the Azores may 16 to the 30. Even though the weather wasn't always cooperative which is beyond our control ,our group leader Tania A was amazing rearranging the schedules so we were still able to do most of our hikes but on different days . She always had other great ideas for us to see to learn about the wonderful Azores. Tania made a point of getting to know each one of our group and was so helpful if we had any questions or to find the information we needed on restaurants , and different activities when we had free time. The restaurants she suggested were awesome and we had a great time as a group or it was optional if you chose not to attend..She always kept safety a prioity with our hikes. The scenery of the Azores and all the things and experiences I had , I will never forget. Thanks again to Tania. I would like to suggest she should receive leader of the year for her expertise. Thank you also to Explore!

Azores Archipelago — Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Azores Tour Highlights

  • The main island of the Azores, São Miguel is a must-visit any day and the heart of this luscious archipelago. Twin lakes Caldeira das Sete Cidades boasts a palette of greens and blues an artist would pay top dollar for.
  • For those seeking a peaceful vibe, Corvo is easily accessible from the center and holds a tiny population of only around 400-plus. This least-populated island offers the perfect place to unwind.
  • For your inner geologist, the archipelago hosts 26 active volcanoes waiting to be explored. São Miguel, Falail, and Terceira are all home to volcanoes you can delve into with experienced Azores tour guide groups.
  • The Azores' crystal clear waters are home to 30 whale species, making it one of the world's largest whale sanctuaries. For the best chance at whale spotting, try Terceira, São Jorge, Pico, Faial, and Graciosa. Look for local marine experts to learn about each species' individual quirks.
  • As a collection of volcanic islands, signs of thermal activity abound! Make the most of your downtime in one of the islands’ many hot springs. The aptly named Furnas town is popular, with some springs even open after dark!
  • The Azores islands are blessed with scenic trails of jaw-dropping views for hikes, trail runs, and biking. Sanguinho Trail and Lagoa do Fogo Trail on São Miguel Island are popular, Santo Espírito Maia Trail on Santa Maria Island is an easy trail with a waterfall, and Mistérios Negros Trail on Terceira Island is a stunningly beautiful 5km loop. And there are many others!

Azores Travel Tips

  • To enjoy the journey as much as the destination, cruise tours offer that touch of luxury to your travels. Experience floating luxury with our Azores tours or regular ferries offer passenger and car-carry services across most islands.
  • Consider the extra costs for small amenities in the hot springs. Always carry extra few Euros in cash for lockers and towels in the bathing areas.
  • Locals in the Azores joke that it is possible to experience all 4 seasons in a day here. Take it seriously and make sure you pack smart and dress for all seasons.
  • If you have 2 to 3 days, you should be able to get a taste of a couple of islands or spend them all exploring São Miguel. But if you want a full experience we recommend planning a week to a 10-day long trip.
  • While the ferries between the islands are regular, the length of each trip varies. Closer islands are traversable within an hour, but if you want to see further islands, you’ll need closer to 3 hours.
  • The best and easiest way to get to the Azores archipelago is via flight from Lisbon or Porto. You will also find flights from Faro and Madeira. Internationally, there are direct flights available to the islands from the USA, the UK, Canada, France, and others.
