The Azores’ weather in April

Temperatures in the Azores in April are between 15°C (59°F) and 17°C (62°F). Humidity remains high as usual in the archipelago, averaging 82%, but it feels overall drier than in the winter months due to the warmer temperatures. The rains are moderate and usually come in short, temporary showers. The rain forecast is at 72mm only, and Ponta Delgada usually sees only 13 rainy days. This allows hiking trails to stay moderately dry and avoid landslides, making it an overall decent time for treks as compared to rainier months.

Springtime is the best time to visit the Azores if you are looking for a peaceful stay in contact with nature. Experience the islands at their fullest and don’t miss out on:

  • Whale watching: April and May are arguably the best months to see whales in the Azores. During spring, several migratory species pass through the archipelago on their journey up north, such as blue whales and fin whales.
  • Trekking: April’s temperatures are perfect to venture outside and hike all the major trails on the Azores without crowds. Take advantage of the lower temperature of spring to try the most challenging routes in the Azores, such as the Ten Volcanoes Trail in Faial or the hike to the summit of Pico Island.
  • Tremor Festival: It’s one of the main festivals in the archipelago, happening every year in April or March in São Miguel. It’s a four-day-long event, featuring workshops and concerts in breathtaking locations around the island.
  • Romeiros: In March and April, the pilgrims of São Miguel (Romeiros) travel from church to church. This long-lasting tradition involves men and women wearing traditional clothes and walking for days all around São Miguel.
  • Better rates and fewer crowds: Even if closer to the high season, April is still relatively free from crowds. You will have the best beaches of the islands mostly for yourself. Less crowds also mean that accommodation rates, services and activities are lower than usual.

The Dez Vulcões (Ten Volcanoes) trail in Faial is a 19-kilometer hike with an elevation gain of over 800 meters, running through the rim of a 400-meter caldera. April is a great time to enjoy the hike and see the autochthonous flowers in bloom.

The Azores are also known for their wide range of whale and dolphin species. São Miguel is the most popular destination for whale watching, but you can also find whale-watching tours in Terceira, Pico, and Faial.

Many seasonal tours and activities become available again starting from the beginning of spring.
