The Azores’ weather in February
Azores’ temperatures in February are between 14°C (57°F) and 17°C (63°F). While the weather can be unpredictable, with frequent showers, rains in the Azores don’t usually last the entire day. The western islands of Flores and Corvo experience slightly more rain than São Miguel and Terceira, and the mountaintop of Pico is occasionally covered in a thin layer of snow. You can also expect fog at higher altitudes in the inner part of the islands and more days of rough seas. While the temperatures still allow hiking, trails can be muddy and at times interrupted due to landslides.

Why visit the Azores in February?
The Azores is capable of satisfying your thirst for the outdoors even in the winter month. Besides the lush landscape and fewer crowds here are some other reasons to visit the Portuguese islands in February.
- Better rates: A trip to the Azores in February means accommodation rates along with other travel-related activities costs are lower than usual. For instance, a daily budget for accommodation plus a rental car is about USD 130 to 180 during the regular season, and only USD 90 to 120 in February.
- Fewer crowds: With all of the popular attractions in the Azores in February almost tourist-free, your visit will be even more memorable. Don’t miss the view of Sete Cidades’ lakes from Boca do Inferno, the natural swimming pool of Simão Dias and the waterfalls of Poço da Ribeira do Ferreiro—you might have it all to yourself.
- Partake in Carnaval: If Easter is early, Carnaval (Mardi Gras) falls in February. Celebrations are held on all the islands, with the largest happening in São Miguel, which hosts four nights of parties.
- Pick up your surfboards: February is one of the best times for surfing in the Azores. Clean and surfable waves remain consistent throughout the month, typically ranging in size from 0.5 to 2 meters depending on the spot.
Where to go and what to do
If you are traveling to the Azores for the surfing season or the hot springs, São Miguel is the best island to be at in February. We suggest staying in the proximity of Ribeira Grande or Ponta Delgada to have the surfing spots of Santa Barbara and Milicias and the thermal baths of Dona Beija and Caldeira Velha close by.
It’s also a good time to visit the Gorreana tea factory and tour all the thermal baths of São Miguel. Another great alternative while waiting for the sun is to visit the volcanic caves of Gruta do Carvão in São Miguel, Gruta das Torres in Pico or Algar do Carvão in Terceira Island. Do note that during the low season the caves are only open some days of the week. Confirm their opening times before visiting them.
February is also the season of rainbows and lush green landscapes. Hike in the islands of the central group for breathtaking sceneries and peaceful trails without tourists. Some of the hikes you can’t miss in February include the waterfall trail of Salto do Prego and Salto do Cagarrão in Faial, Caminho das Fontes in São Jorge and the accessible PR1 in Terceira.
While the hike up to the top of Pico Mountain on Pico Island is open all year round, the fog and uncertain weather of February may get in the way of a perfect view from the summit. However, the island is still worth visiting for its wine-tasting tours, the whaling museum and its trails around the vineyards such as Trilha de Vinhas.
What to pack
Make sure to pack clothes for all four seasons. From swimsuits and shorts to sweaters and beanies, you’ll need to be ready for all kinds of weather. The secret is to wear layers that are easy to carry in your backpack. Finish up with a good rain jacket, and you're ready for anything. The sun can be strong even in the winter months, so make sure to use sunscreen and wear a hat when the sun is shining.
The overall weather in the Azores in February is comfortable, yet very unpredictable. It’s a good period to hike the most popular spots in the archipelago and join the islands’ activities without queues and crowds. If you are not afraid of a little cold weather and don't mind skipping beach time, February can be a great time to visit the islands.
