When they think of Romania, most people think of Transylvania (and the legend of Dracula!). However, there is so much more to this fascinating country than its gothic horror. Take a local culture tour to experience the country’s vast forests, painted monasteries and medieval towns. We also recommend visiting the museums and galleries of Bucharest to get a taste of Romania’s beautiful art history. Scroll down to view our Romania tours.

Romania Tour Reviews

Honest insights from past guests on our Romania tours

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Transylvania. The itinerary was packed with interesting things to do, so the trip felt longer than the few days it actually was. The only downside was that, despite our tour leader's best efforts to contact the ranger, we were unable fit in a second bear visit. We were lucky to have a fantastic group who bonded really well, and Rux, our tour leader was outstanding. One point of feedback is that it would have been useful to know in advance (ie. in the pre-tour info) roughly how much local currency we needed to take for tips, splitting meal bills, etc. We did the tour after it being recommended by a friend and we'll definitely be recommending it to our friends too!

Accommodation and itinerary were as described. Our Tour Leader was exceptional in all aspects of her job, keeping us informed, entertained and pandering to the needs of challenging group members.

A very enjoyable trip around Romania which covered a good variety of places and experiences. A mix of culture and activity. There are some stunning sights. The painted monasteries were for me one of the highlights.. Walking in the mountains with spectacular views. Birdwatching on the delta. All excellent. A great group of people and an excellent guide, Horea, and driver, Stephan. The trip exceeded my expectations and I now have a far greater appreciation of Romania’s culture, history and landscapes.

We had a fantastic long weekend in Transylvania. Our guide, Rux, was excellent – extremely knowledgeable, patient, and professional throughout the trip. The itinerary was very well thought out and gave us the chance to experience so much in just a few days. The highlight for us was definitely the bear watching, which was an unforgettable experience. Be prepared – this is a full-on trip with long days and early starts, but it’s packed with activities and well worth it for everything you get to see and do. Highly recommended!

Wow! I what beautiful nature on this trip. The trip was listed as moderate to challenging and it was! I so be in shape and bring poles. We added up the hike and In 5 days 70 km walk 3306 m elevation gain 4448 m descent ⛰️ Down was the hardest. We climbed a ridge and saw spectacular views. The we managed to see a bear-rare, red deer and tree frog. Flowers were still blooming. The huts were nice and the accommodated. My dietary issues. It was like camping at one hut because no indoor plumbing. Our tour guide Tudor exudes knowledge and confidence and that made all the difference. Romania is safe and beautiful and a place to visit. I highly recommend this tour... Just pack light as you carry your pack most days to get to huts

The itinerary for the 14-day Balkan Adventure tour is a bit difficult for individuals with reduced mobility. However, it is worth it. Most of the visits are done at an acceptable pace given two exceptions in Bulgaria and Serbia. One of the passenger on our summer 2025 tour was 82 years old and she was able to negotiate the tour in an acceptable fashion and she was always positive and in a good mood during her journey!

Romania Tours — Highlights and Travel Tips

When you think about Romania, chances are you immediately think of Transylvania and the mysterious Dracula. However, the country has so much more to offer its visitors than this legend. Romania is full of historic medieval towns, colourful streets, gorgeous castles, and Communist-era architecture. The country also offers beach resorts on the Black Sea and thermal spas among the Carpathian Mountains. If you’re looking for a charming destination steeped in rich history and fascinating culture, a holiday in Romania should sit at the top of your list.

Tour Highlights

  • Experience the magic and myth of Bran Castle
  • Visit the salt mines and underground cathedral of Salina Targu Ocna
  • Walk the colourful streets of Sibiu
  • Chase waterfalls in the Cindrel Mountains
  • Explore the halls of Peleș Castle
  • Drive the incredibly twisty roads of the Transfagarasan Highway
  • Climb the clock tower in Sighisoara for unparalleled views of the medieval town

Travel Tips

  • If flying into Bucharest, the capital city, be aware that the top tourist sites of Transylvania are a couple of hours away. Romania is a very large country, so be sure to plan accordingly.
  • You can’t miss Covrigi, a traditional Romanian snack that is similar to a pretzel. Covered in seeds or filled with jam, they make the perfect inexpensive snack as you roam city streets.
  • Romanians are extremely friendly and enjoy interacting with travellers. English is spoken in large cities, but locals love any attempt to use Romanian. Some topics are still taboo in Romania, however, including homosexuality.
  • Taxis are inexpensive and a great way to travel around Romania. However, be careful of scam artists. Always make sure the taxi uses a meter, otherwise set an agreed price before travelling.
  • Take extra caution when travelling through Romanian nature, particularly if camping. A bear sighting is quite common around small towns, and the country features Europe’s largest population of wolves.

Romania has seasonal weather so please do check up on the best time to visit Romania before planning your tour. And if you’re still hunting for more things to do and places to explore in the country , do check out our Romania Travel Guide for more information.
