Great Romania Itineraries: How Many Days to Spend?

If you are wondering how long should you spend in Romania, we suggest planning a week-long itinerary. You can focus on important landmarks such as Peles Castle and Bran Castle, Brasov's Old Town, and the capital Bucharest during a 7-day trip. 

Adding three more days to your Romania itinerary opens up space for Sarmizegetusa Regia, where the ancient Dacians lived, and the picturesque Sibiu. You can cast your net further afield with a two-week Romania trip and add the geological marvel that is the Red Ravine in your itinerary. Three weeks is enough duration to turn you into a ‘native’! However, given that not all travelers have two or three weeks to spare, we highly recommend anywhere from seven to ten days to explore the best of this country that is shrouded in myth and mystery.

Tick off major highlights during a seven-day Romania itinerary. The capital, Bucharest, founded in 14th century, will be your first stop if you arrive by plane. Spend a couple of days in the city dubbed ‘little Paris’ before World War II. Bucharest is still home to palaces and architecture that are reminiscent of its past glory, and a walking tour of the city will allow you to admire many buildings, squares, churches and parks from bygone eras. While there, do not miss out on a chance to gawk at the world’s second-biggest administrative building, the Palace of Parliament. 

Bucharest is also conveniently located for travelers who want to treat themselves with a plethora of castle tours. We highly recommend a road trip to Sinaia where you can visit one of the most famous castles in the country, Peles Castle. The ornate stonework and stained-glass windows of the castle will fascinate you, but the 160 rooms will test your physical endurance. 

You cannot visit Romania and not say that you were hosted by Dracula. So head for Bran next. Built in 1377, Bran Castle was the inspiration for Bram Stokers Dracula. The castle is located on the border of Transylvania and Wallachia and now functions as a museum. Add Sighisoara and Sibiu to your itinerary if you want to see more castles and Gothic churches. If not, Romania also has plenty of nature walks and hikes to offer. We suggest hiking in the majestic Carpathian Mountains if you are into the great outdoors!

With 10 days, you can experience Romania beyond its magical creatures and spooky legends. Explore the Maramures region, an area dotted with picturesque villages and quiet forests. The scenic splendour of the region is complemented by the warm hospitality of its people. See its ancient churches along with Barsana Monastery, the latter considered to be an epitome of the region’s craftsmanship. If you are athletic, take up the challenge to hike through the Creasta Cocosului trail in the Gutai Mountains.  

Alternatively, add a trip to the Danube Delta. The river is home to 23 ecosystems and is known for its unique cuisine. Enjoy delicious stews prepared by local fishermen and taste wines from the vineyards that dot the surrounding landscape.

More time translates into more opportunities. With 14 days in Romania, you can expand your travel radius and dive deeper. With two weeks at hand, there is no way you should miss out on Bucovina’s painted monasteries. These monasteries feature 15th and 16th century frescoes showcasing stories from the Bible on the outside walls. 

The city of lasi is another cultural hub that is high on our recommendation list. It is home to the Palace of Culture, which flaunts almost 300 rooms and houses the Moldavia National Museum Complex along with Cultural Heritage Conservation-Restoration Centre. Choose a comfortable footwear to conquer them all!

If you have some time to spare, a trip to Translyvania is a must. When there do not miss out on the chance to discover the little-known natural marvel called the Red Ravine. Similar to the Grand Canyon in the USA, the Red Ravine features beautiful rock formations that are a result of eons of natural erosion. The shape of the rocks ranges from towers and pyramids to mushrooms — sights that will have your Instagram followers green with envy.
