This flexible tour is a superb introduction to the Swiss Alps for those who relish independent exploration, combining the picturesque valleys and dramatic peaks of Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, and Zermatt with the legendary Eiger, Mönch, Jungfrau, and Matterhorn as your constant backdrop. Experienced travelers and senior adventurers alike will appreciate the freedom to tailor each day’s walking to their own pace—choose between invigorating high-altitude treks or gentle valley strolls along flower-strewn meadows, aided by detailed route maps and GPX files.

A highlight unique to this tour package is the opportunity to ride the mountain railway up to Jungfraujoch, Europe’s highest station, offering staggering views at nearly 12,000 feet. With stays in charming 2-3* hotels (with upgrade options) and ample chances for sightseeing or relaxing in alpine towns, you’ll discover the region’s postcard-perfect beauty at your leisure. Plus, the extensive Swiss mountain transport system allows you to shorten walks or spend extra time soaking up the atmosphere in villages like Wengen and Mürren. Whether you’re craving the challenge of a Bergweg or the tranquility of a Wanderweg, this walking tour offers a rich blend of adventure, comfort, and flexibility—a perfect way to experience the wonders of the Swiss Alps.

day 1Arrival Meiringen

This pleasant little town is an ideal starting point for hiking in the Bernese region of Switzerland.
Meiringen is the home of the Meringue. There are a couple of bakeries along the 'high street' where these are much in evidence in all shapes and sizes. Meiringen is also known for the spectacular Reichenbach Falls into which Sherlock Holmes and his foe Moriarty, the master criminal, fell locked in each other’s arms. A funicular railway may be used to take you to the top of the falls; otherwise, it is 30 minutes’ walk out of town. You can visit the Sherlock Holmes Museum, which is housed in the old Anglican Church in the open area by the Park Hotel, which is itself a national monument.
The town suffered a disastrous fire in 1875 and there remains little except for the old church with archaeological remains lying underneath it and a mediaeval watchtower in the 'upper' part of the town.
Settle into our pleasant hotel and explore the resort town in the evening.

We really enjoyed visiting iconic Swiss towns and taking in the the stunning scenery including both The Tiger and the The Matterhorn. Unfortunately, we both got COVID four days before the trip commenced so could not take advantage of all the walking options due to our reduced energy levels.

The recommended hikes were terrific. We really appreciated having multiple options each day. The hotels were quite adequate. The breakfasts were ample.

Great trip. UTracks got everything right! The hotels were great. The descriptions of the hikes was perfect, and the extraneous information made it all the more special.
