Itinerary

Cycle the captivating region of Puglia, riding through olive groves and along the winding coast to stay in some of the most spectacular cities and towns in Italy. The adventure begins in the cave town of Matera, officially in the Basilicata region and beloved by film directors for its ancient beauty, before progressing to the fairytale trulli houses of Alberobello, the White City of Ostuni, and seaside Gallipoli. It ends in Lecce, known as the Florence of the South for its extraordinary collection of baroque landmarks.

day 1Adventure begins in Matera

The town of Matera is a real jewel of southern Italy, and our hotel is just a short walk from the historic centre. There is usually time in the afternoon to wander through the narrow alleys of the town’s Unesco-listed cave-dwelling district and enjoy the unique atmosphere of this enchanting city.
For millennia, inhabitants of this region have carved dwellings directly into ravines and gullies made of tuff (or tufa), a characteristic honey-coloured soft stone. These houses are called Sassi and are a Unesco World Heritage site. Matera is the only place in the world where people still live in the same houses as their ancestors did 9,000 years ago.
Around 6pm, say ciao to your tour leader and fellow travellers, when we gather as a group to get to know each other and learn more about the adventures ahead. Your tour leader then ensures a big welcome over a group dinner.

Amazing Cycling in Puglia !

It’s been 1 year since the first week of June, 2025 when my wife and I did the 1-week cycling of the Puglia region beginning in the city/town of Matera (which is in the Basilicata region, right on the border of the Puglia region). We had such an amazing time exploring the back country roads and many small quaint towns the Puglia region offers. So many memorable stops along the way including caffe, gelato, walks in town squares (piazza). The group of 15 riders plus Emanuele (local tour guide) and Leonardo (driver/assistant) were all great people to spend a vacation with.

Cycling Puglia & Matera

Guides were fantastic- knowledgeable, clearly very experienced, fun, kind, relaxed and paid a lot of attention to detail - we were unlucky with the weather but they were so supportive and helped us make the best of it. Great group - I know this is a bit of a lottery but everyone was good fun and it made a huge impact on my trip. Locations and stops on the trip - ie, the routes were spectacular and felt like a real taste of the area geographically, culturally and historically. Hotels were of a high standard and massieras were beautiful. Great food and restaurants.

The best bike trip you'll do. From someone whose done a few

As an Exodus staff member (quality control Director) - whose done 6 different cycling trips - you wont get better than this one. The combination of superb local leader& driver, quiet cycle routes and stunning southern Italian towns is almost perfect.

Our great Italian cycling adventure

We thoroughly enjoyed our Exodus cycling trip from Matera to Leece in June 2025. As first time visitors to this part of Italy we really appreciated our guide, Manni's knowledge of the area, contemporary and historical. We had a great group of fellow cyclists, eleven of us in total. The accommodation was excellent as were our bikes. This is our second Exodus cycle trip and we would thoroughly recommend the trip.
