Itinerary

The route Umbwe is almost parallel to Machame. The two treks merge at Barranco camp.

It is one of the shortest routes of Kili, frequently chosen by the groups who like “classic” routes, but do not favor overcrowded Machame. The climb starts at 1600 m point and traverses all climatic zones of Kilimanjaro. It is not frequented by travelers, but it is comparatively inexpensive. Climbers with good physical preparation may like.

Kindly note, that this route has great views but it is the most difficult way to reach the summit. Altitude acclimatization is not good due to the rapid ascent. Hence, it is recommended only to experienced hikers in good physical shape.

day 1 - Arrival

The group arrives at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). Our representative will meet you and transfer to Aishi Machame Hotel.

Our manager will visit you in the evening, bringing a printed, signed and sealed agreement. He will give you a brief trekking orientation and check your equipment.

Important info:

The hotel price includes breakfast only.

Hotel check-in starts at 2 PM.

Accommodation:3 Star Hotel

day 2 - From Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Camp

Our guides and climbing crew will come to the hotel. A small briefing will be followed by a transfer to the entrance to the Kilimanjaro National Park – Umbwe Gate (1640 m). After the guides arrange the park permits and register the crew with the emergency service, the group will trek to Umbwe Camp (2940 m). A long trekking with significant altitude increase lies ahead. Choosing and keeping a proper trekking pace is very important at this stage.

The route goes through the tropical forest, where the chances of rains are high. Do not forget raincoats (or waterproof ponchos). By the time of your arrival at the camp, our team will arrange the camp and cooker will make dinner.

It will be you the first day at such altitude. We highly recommend you following these simple instructions:

• Reduce caffeine consumption

• Drink 4 liters (or more) of water (you should better drink in small portions, but frequently)

• Once the symptoms of the high altitude sickness are found, the intake of Diamox is advisable. Moreover, the pill can be taken as a preventive measure at the beginning of the trekking. Seeking professional medical advisory on the possible individual allergic is recommended.

Acclimatization is more difficult at night because of respiratory activity decrease multiplied by high altitude. Once you discover the symptoms of high altitude sickness, ask the guides for help.

Duration:5-7 hours
Accommodation: Camping

day 3 - From Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp

The group wakes up early in the morning. After the breakfast, you start trekking to Barranco Camp. A low shrub will change to the tropical forest and if nebulosity is low, a spectacular view on Mount Meru will open. This leg of your trekking is moderate in duration, by midday you will arrive at Barranco Camp (3970 m). The camp is located inside the huge volcano rift.

The cooks will prepare a dinner for you. We recommend spending the rest of the day resting. It makes acclimatization process smoother.

Duration:4-5 hours
Accommodation: Camping

day 4 - From Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Early wake up, breakfast and you start conquering the Barranco Wall. We recommend starting as early as possible to outstrip other groups. Ascending the wall of the gorge is not a complexity at all. It takes only about one hour. After this accomplishment, you will have an opportunity to rest and take some photos, having spectacular Kibo volcano as a background.

Then a relatively complex trekking awaits you. The rest of the way to Karanga is full of highs and lows, but, no worries, our guide will choose the most optimal trekking speed for you. After you reach the camp, a warm lunch will be offered. After a couple of hours, you will have an additional acclimatization hike up to 300 m towards Barafu and go back to the camp.

Important note:

Acclimatization hike is an easy trekking up to some minor altitudes. Please, kindly note, that these acclimatization hikes are very important in order to reach Uhuru Peak successfully and will help you to prevent AMS (acute mountain sickness).

Duration:5-7 hours
Accommodation: Camping

day 5 - From Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Our cooks will serve a breakfast; then you will climb to the summit camp Barafu (4673 m). From there you will make a night push to Uhuru Peak (5895 m). You will spend the remainder of the day there, adapting to the altitude and regaining your stamina.

Our crew will erect a camp for you, prepare the tents and warm sleeping bags to give you a complete rest before the night Uhuru climb. The guide will advise you going sleep early and to taking in Diamox and other pills if necessary. They will reduce the unpleasant symptoms of high altitude sickness. Try to drink much water and rest more. Always remember that acclimatization is the best with minimal physical activity.

Duration:4-5 hours
Accommodation: Camping

day 6 - From Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and down to Millennium

At night, the team leaves the Barafu Camp (4673 m) and starts conquering Uhuru Peak (5895 m). Technically, this leg of your journey is not difficult, but high altitude is really a challenge. A guide will accompany each couple of the climbers. He will monitor your stamina and fortitude. Once Uhuru is successfully conquered, the group may descend to the glacier.

Then, the group will go down to Barafu Camp. After a two hours rest, you will continue descending to Millennium Camp (3750 m).

Important note:

Do not forget that the 90% of all accidents (broken hands, legs, fractures and strains) befall on the way down. Legs and feet are the most vulnerable areas (especially toenails).

Duration:8-12 hours
Accommodation: Camping

day 7 - From Millennium Camp to Mweka Gate

The camp is located amidst the dense tropical forest. Waking up in the morning, satisfied with your accomplishment, you will feel great relief because of lowering altitude. Our cooks will offer you a warm breakfast, and you will start going down to the exit from the National Park – Mweka Gate (1640 m). Then, the team will salute and congratulate you. You will have an opportunity to leave your memories in the Mountain Kilimanjaro guestbook.

We will present you Kilimanjaro Climbing certificates in our office and then transfer you to Aishi Machame Hotel.

Duration:4-5 hours
Accommodation:3 Star Hotel

day 8 - Departure

Rest at Aishi Machame Hotel. Transfer to the Kilimanjaro International Airport

Important note:

Hotel check-out is at 11:00. In the event of necessity (e.g. your flight is scheduled for evening time) you can prolong your stay to 18:00 for extra payment (charged by the hotel).

Climbing Kilimanjaro

My father and I have just climbed Kilimanjaro Mount with this tour operator and everything was better than Id imaniginated! The organization, instalations of the camping tent and, mainly, the professionalism of the team that helped us from the beggining of the route Rongai up to reach the summit! Especially the guides Elipokei and Erick! Byond the knowledgement of the route, me, as a doctor, could noted that they really knew what they were doing about our health control especially even because my father is 67 years old and reacheted the Gilmanns point with their help.I deeply recommend this company!

Bucket list - check! Amazing people - check! Experience of a lifetime - check!

Where do I begin...the tour operator team was always super responsive and helpful with all of the silly questions I had prior to my trip. Pick up from the airport was provided - if you can, get your visa before you arrive. You can get it at the airport, however you'll wait for quite a while. I think it took me approx. 1-1.5 hours. The hotel, the staff and the food we stayed at for the first and last night was good. Breakfast and 2 bottles of water per room is included and our hotel also had a pool where you could watch monkey jumping from tree to tree :-) If you're planning to go somewhere after your hike, don't worry, you can leave extra luggage at the operator's office.I felt very safe and welcome all trip long. Our guide Victor and his team took very good care of us. We had medical checks twice a day to ensure the altitude wasn't getting at us. Everyone of us took Diamox for altitude sickness, which we got from our guide and I can highly recommend it. Just be aware that if you do, your feet, face and fingers might have a tickling sensation occasionally. The Umbwe route is considered the most difficult. Our group was aged 30-approx. 60 and we all prepared by going to the gym and doing some endurance training. Every one of us made it to the top! :-D Summit day/night is quite exhausting, since you'll be on your feet a lot.The team feeds you really well with breakfast, lunch and dinner and lots of tea and water. We all brought some nuts, protein bars, chocolates, etc. from home as snacks. At the end of our trip we tipped our guide (who then split it with all porters and the other guides). Everyone of us tipped USD 200 or more.I had the experience of a lifetime!

Thanks for excellent service and for making our Kilimanjaro dream come true!

My wife and I made a climbing with this tour operator in October 2015.When choosing the company for climbing Kilimanjaro we were also considering some more budget options, however eventually we were very happy that we were climbing with this company. The difference in pricing is visible on the Mount when you see how other climbers struggle compared to you. Starting from the airport the operator provided excellent services. My wife and I were taking a private 6 days climb via Umbwe route, our guides were very nice guys Victor and Haji. The trekking was very interesting, at first, we were going through rainforests, starting from the third day we witnessed the picturesque landscapes of the high altitude tundra, which were soon replaced by the unforgettable Lunar-Martian desert landscapes. The team was very professional! We did not expect such a level of service on the Mountain. The meals were really great, rich and varied. The guides were helpful and very caring they checked our medical condition twice a day using oxymeters and were checking our lungs and overall state of health. The tents and all the equipment was almost brand-new and we were sleeping on 3-inch thick matrasses! The final summiting night was the most memorable and mind-blowing experience. Our guides helped us to conquer the Uhuru peak successfully and escorted us inside the crater to see the Kilimanjaro glaciers. Thank you Victor and Haji! Thank you for making our Kilimanjaro dream come true!

Smooth, Scenic, and Superbly Organized I joined a 6-Day Marangu Route hike with Kilisa Tours, and the whole experience was seamless. The accommodations in the mountain huts were cozy, and the support staff made sure we were always comfortable. Our guide shared fascinating stories about the mountain s history and wildlife. Everything ran perfectly on schedule, and the company s attention to detail was impressive. I ve done many treks before, but Kilisa Tours stands out for their genuine care and world-class service. Couldn t have asked for more!
