The route Umbwe is almost parallel to Machame. The two treks merge at Barranco camp.
It is one of the shortest routes of Kili, frequently chosen by the groups who like “classic” routes, but do not favor overcrowded Machame. The climb starts at 1600 m point and traverses all climatic zones of Kilimanjaro. It is not frequented by travelers, but it is comparatively inexpensive. Climbers with good physical preparation may like.
Kindly note, that this route has great views but it is the most difficult way to reach the summit. Altitude acclimatization is not good due to the rapid ascent. Hence, it is recommended only to experienced hikers in good physical shape.
I read the google reviews and booked a Kilimanjaro climb. The operator and their team are rock solid. They took care of every person, including their own team. Highly recommend!
My father and I have just climbed Kilimanjaro Mount with this tour operator and everything was better than Id imaniginated! The organization, instalations of the camping tent and, mainly, the professionalism of the team that helped us from the beggining of the route Rongai up to reach the summit! Especially the guides Elipokei and Erick! Byond the knowledgement of the route, me, as a doctor, could noted that they really knew what they were doing about our health control especially even because my father is 67 years old and reacheted the Gilmanns point with their help.I deeply recommend this company!
Where do I begin...the tour operator team was always super responsive and helpful with all of the silly questions I had prior to my trip. Pick up from the airport was provided - if you can, get your visa before you arrive. You can get it at the airport, however you'll wait for quite a while. I think it took me approx. 1-1.5 hours. The hotel, the staff and the food we stayed at for the first and last night was good. Breakfast and 2 bottles of water per room is included and our hotel also had a pool where you could watch monkey jumping from tree to tree :-) If you're planning to go somewhere after your hike, don't worry, you can leave extra luggage at the operator's office.I felt very safe and welcome all trip long. Our guide Victor and his team took very good care of us. We had medical checks twice a day to ensure the altitude wasn't getting at us. Everyone of us took Diamox for altitude sickness, which we got from our guide and I can highly recommend it. Just be aware that if you do, your feet, face and fingers might have a tickling sensation occasionally. The Umbwe route is considered the most difficult. Our group was aged 30-approx. 60 and we all prepared by going to the gym and doing some endurance training. Every one of us made it to the top! :-D Summit day/night is quite exhausting, since you'll be on your feet a lot.The team feeds you really well with breakfast, lunch and dinner and lots of tea and water. We all brought some nuts, protein bars, chocolates, etc. from home as snacks. At the end of our trip we tipped our guide (who then split it with all porters and the other guides). Everyone of us tipped USD 200 or more.I had the experience of a lifetime!
My wife and I made a climbing with this tour operator in October 2015.When choosing the company for climbing Kilimanjaro we were also considering some more budget options, however eventually we were very happy that we were climbing with this company. The difference in pricing is visible on the Mount when you see how other climbers struggle compared to you. Starting from the airport the operator provided excellent services. My wife and I were taking a private 6 days climb via Umbwe route, our guides were very nice guys Victor and Haji. The trekking was very interesting, at first, we were going through rainforests, starting from the third day we witnessed the picturesque landscapes of the high altitude tundra, which were soon replaced by the unforgettable Lunar-Martian desert landscapes. The team was very professional! We did not expect such a level of service on the Mountain. The meals were really great, rich and varied. The guides were helpful and very caring they checked our medical condition twice a day using oxymeters and were checking our lungs and overall state of health. The tents and all the equipment was almost brand-new and we were sleeping on 3-inch thick matrasses! The final summiting night was the most memorable and mind-blowing experience. Our guides helped us to conquer the Uhuru peak successfully and escorted us inside the crater to see the Kilimanjaro glaciers. Thank you Victor and Haji! Thank you for making our Kilimanjaro dream come true!
