Itinerary
Dreaming of reaching the top of Africa? The "Seven-Day Mount Kilimanjaro Climb: Lemosho Route" is your gateway to the continent’s highest peak, designed for experienced and senior trekkers seeking both challenge and scenery. Renowned for its high summit success rate and breathtaking vistas, the Lemosho Route provides a quieter, more immersive trekking experience.
Your journey starts at Londorossi Gate on Kilimanjaro’s western flank, winding through lush rainforest and up to the panoramic Shira Plateau. Each day brings new landscapes—from the surreal Lava Tower to the sheltered camps of Barranco and Karanga—allowing for optimal acclimatization and increased summit chances. The final push to Uhuru Peak is a true test of endurance, rewarded by sunrise views from the roof of Africa.
After your descent via Mweka Hut, relax in Moshi with included accommodations before and after your trek. The unmatched USP of this trip is the balance of scenic diversity, lower crowds, and thoughtful pacing, making it one of the best ways to experience Kilimanjaro for first-time or seasoned trekkers alike.
This is more than a trek—it’s a journey through ever-changing ecosystems, guided by experts who ensure both your safety and enjoyment on this bucket-list adventure.
day 1 - Moshi – Londorossi Gate – Forest Camp
We will pick you up from your hotel in Moshi and drive you to Londorossi Park Gate. Complete your formalities and continue your journey to the Lemosho trailhead (it takes another hour to reach the trailhead).
Your trek starts now. The final destination of the day is Forest Camp.
Walking distance: 6 km
Total time taken: 3 to 4 hours
day 2 - Forest Camp – Shira Camp 1
Continue through the trail leading out of the forest and into a savannah of tall grasses, heathers and volcanic rocks draped with lichen beards. Ascend lush rolling hills and cross several streams to reach the Shira Ridge before dropping gently down to Shira Camp 1.
Walking distance: 8 km
Total time taken: 6 hours
day 3 - Shira Camp 1 – Shira 2 – Moir Hut
Head for Shira Camp 2. This spectacular camp is located beneath Kilimanjaro's northern ice fields
across the Shira Plateau. Continue to Moir Hut, a little-used site at the base of the Lent Hills. A variety of optional walks are available in the Lent Hills, making this an excellent acclimatization opportunity.
Walking distance: 15 km
Total time taken: 6 - 7 hours
day 4 - Moir Hut – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp
Begin the day climbing up a ridge and then head southeast towards the Lava Tower, a 92-metre-tall volcanic rock formation. Then descend down to Barranco Camp through the strange but beautiful senecio forest.
Walking distance: 10 km
Total time taken: 7 hours
day 5 - Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp
Leave Barranco after breakfast and continue your journey through a steep ridge and past the Barranco Wall to the campsite in the Karanga Valley. Leave Karanga and hit the junction that connects with the Mweka Trail. Continue your journey to Barafu Camp. At this point, you would have completed the South Circuit. Set up your camp in Barafu, rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the summit day.
Walking distance: 9 km
Total time taken: 8 - 10 hours
day 6 - Barafu Camp – Kilimanjaro Summit – Mweka Hut
Your guide will wake you up at around 11:30 pm and help you prepare for the summit attempt. You start your push to the summit in the morning. This is the most mentally and physically challenging part of the trek. Ascend for several hours at a slow but steady pace while taking frequent but short breaks. The trail travels through a heavy scree as you climb to the crater rim.
In about six hours, you will reach Stella Point (5685 m), located on the crater rim. Continue your journey around the crater rim until you finally reach the summit of Uhuru Peak (5895 m) – the highest point in the continent of Africa.
Spend a short time on the summit taking photographs and enjoying the view before the descent to Barafu begins. The hike down to Barafu Camp takes about three hours. Rest and enjoy a hot lunch at the camp before continuing your journey down to Mweka Hut (3100 m).
Walking distance to the summit: 7 km
Total time taken to reach the summit: 8 hours
Walking distance from the summit to Mweka Camp: 23 km
Total time taken to reach the camp from summit: 8 hours
day 7 - Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate – Moshi
Following a well-deserved breakfast, you will descend for three hours to reach Mweka Gate. There, national park authorities require all hikers to sign their names to receive certificates of completion. Hikers who reached Stella Point receive green certificates and hikers who reached Uhuru Peak receive gold certificates.
Continue your journey downhill after that for another one hour to reach Mweka village. You will be served a hot lunch before being driven back to your hotel in Moshi.
Walking distance: 15 km
Total time taken: 3 hours
